I love training at 10th Planet Poway! Such a cool and laid back spot. So many gyms in the area but you will not find a place like 10th Planet. They have so much knowledge to offer; whether you're training to learn self defense or training to compete. You can tell the coaches and team here really care about each other's progress. Everyone is so helpful. Kevin is the head instructor at 10th Planet Poway. He's super skilled at what he does and has such a laid back energy when teaching. At a competition level, he teaches not only the moves, but different reactions you may get from your opponent and how to counter each of them. He keeps class light and fun while simultaneously training you to be a killer lol. Josh has so much knowledge in both BJJ as a sport and the history of it. You can tell he truly cares about the art. His classes are always filled with so much detail; from the ideal grips to how you should position your arms/legs/body. He definitely keeps an eye on if you're retaining the information and is always eager to help if you aren't quite getting things down. Josh also manages the gym and is always so accommodating if you have questions about memberships, competitions, and other upcoming events. Kyle is the most chill person to train under. He teaches at a slower pace and still manages to have quality classes. Super ideal if you're a beginner or if you're shy. Dave is especially great at teaching if you're interested in competing. He often shares great wrestling advice and keeps class fun. I haven't taken any classes taught by Sam, but he often works the front desk and is consistently friendly and informative. I also haven't taken any classes taught by Zach, and obviously Bobb'e or Jeramy (kids instructors), but have rolled with all of them and can tell they add so much to the team. Every coach has their own style and it's great being able to learn from each of them. Currently, their adult classes are as followed: M-Th: 8:30A-9:30A, 6P-7P, 7P-9P on M-Th. 6P-8P on F. and 10A-12P on Sa. As someone that has no previous background in sports or team activities, I was really anxious about first coming in to train. I felt nervous and self-conscious about looking stupid. From day 1 the team has made me feel comfortable and I eventually realized that everyone is always trying to help their teammates grow. Now I'm so eager to come to class, it's become something I look forward to always. My wife and I had been searching for months for the right gym for our daughters. I called the gym and was able to make an appointment to come in the following day. The staff were very helpful and attentive. We observed the older kids class and were very impressed with the coaching styles. The coaches even took time out of their schedules after the class to introduce themselves and answer any of our questions or concerns. Coach Kevin, Josh, Sam, Bobb'e, Daryn, Kyle, and Brandon all deserve a shout out for being great coaches and role models. I have both my daughters training here, one does the adult classes @16yrs old and my younger in the kids class @10yrs old. With the age gap and schedule I have personally seen every single one of these coaches teaching and mentoring for the past few months and I can honestly say with a whole heart that these gentlemen are not only teaching bjj, but they are also molding everyone to be better people and lots of respect and zero egos. Teaching the more experienced to be good mentors to those who are starting for a better understanding of the different transitions and movements. I would recommend any of these gentlemen as coaches for all ages. The new gym has been scrubbed from the ceiling down and I was there to witness the gym being put together. Cleanliness is a huge priority to the 10th planet family (team). It's only been a few months and my kids love these coaches like uncles. Straight facts without any sugar coating! For the past six months, my two boys, aged 6 and 4, have beenq going to 10th Planet Poway. A friend from my childhood, who was a State Champion wrestler at Poway High School, suggested it. It's been a great place for them to get into sports in Poway and learn from top-notch trainers. The coaches, especially Brandon and Kyle, who teach the younger kids, are fantastic. They're all skilled athletes and really love what they do. Brandon and Kyle make learning fun for the kids while also teaching them discipline. I've been training at 10th Planet Poway for nearly a year, and I feel like I've progressed a lot since I started. I love everything about this place! I always feel welcome when I walk in and this place has quickly become my second home and all my training partners have become like family. I started at another 10th Planet in a different location over a year ago and a half ago and decided that I needed to move onto a different place to learn a little more. Switching over to 10th Planet Poway was the best decision I have ever made. I use to watch Kevin's technique videos on YouTube, but actually learning there from the man himself has been a world of a difference in my jiu jitsu game. He has helped me cover up so many holes and has helped me, and everyone else there, discover so many other moves (some weirder than others) that has improved my jiu jitsu in so many ways, shapes and forms! I've been training here for four months now. I have fun every day, and never feel like I have to drag my ass to the gym. Don't get me wrong- its quite difficult. My kids and I have been training here for a few months now and we all love it. It's the first sport my kids truly enjoy doing and they've played it all.. soccer, baseball, football and basketball. They really look forward to coming to class everyday. I can't speak highly enough of this gym, the instructors, students, and overall atmosphere. 10th Planet Poway has elite instructors who compete at the highest levels. Kevin, the head instructor, is awesome and very hands-on. Kyle, Josh, Bobby, and Dave are also great. Kevin explains big picture concepts and moves in great detail. He doesn't just tell how to do fancy moves, he explains why and when certain moves should be used. This is important because jiu jitsu is very situational. If instructors are teaching a submission, they will also teach escapes and counters that way you have options on defense and offense. Everyone here is extremely helpful, and you will also learn a lot from your training partners. 10th Planet Poway also emphasizes wrestling concepts and takedowns which is very helpful.
