what a lovely local theate....first time visitor & impressed with the performance of our local actors. my friend is in social security & I wanted to support her...it was excellent...love the intimacy of the theatre. such a funny play. 6 person play & each person carried their own weight. would definitely go back. great find & plenty of free parking! read more

I have seen two productions here and loved them both. The currently running "Quartet" is funny and poignant and not to be missed. Superb acting and professional direction. Don't miss it! Addendum: this was a review I somehow failed to post. I have seen several productions since and cannot praise the acting and production enough. I had no idea about this venue till me and my friend decided to see a play on Friday night. We started checking out the Reader and other sites for whats going on around San Diego in the performance arts arena. That's how i came across PowPac Theater in Poway. We saw a comedy play called "Wrong Window" based on Alfred Hitchcock horror movie. Its a very small theater, i'm guessing there were around 10 rows of seats but it made it for a very intimate and cozy feel. Overall we enjoyed the whole theater experience in this small but quaint place, the play was entertaining, funny and engaging. We bought our tickets on line in order to sit together. Tickets were reasonably priced, and if you have a student ID there is a discount for that.The theater is located in the large strip mall with a private parking lot. Its Poway, so don't expect the young crowd, majority of people were of the retirement age. read more

We had heard so many people talk about PowPac and had no idea where it was. We ran into a dear friend Beckie and she told us this was one of those secret gems. We decided to get tickets for the THE SUGAR BEAN SISTERS by Nathan Sanders. Powpac is a tiny theater upstairs in a strip mall. I was thinking this was a really small place and maybe it was going to be, you know...(community theater) And, it was. But it's fabulous community theater. After the lights went off I was sucked into the story and the acting was amazing! I was lost in the story and I look forward to the next performance. read more

What a wonderful way to cap an evening out! From the home-like, cozy, waiting area, to the professional acting and stage design, this theater is a true gem. Access off Poway Road is easy and parking is plentiful. My wife and I went out to dinner last night, then went to the Poway Community Theater to see "Private Lives" by Sir Noel Coward. We were then delighted to see a cozy, but professional presentation of an 89 year old couples comedy that word for word, is still fresh and relevant today. I have been volunteering at PowPac and have seen many fine performances there. Seeing a 1 star review was a real surprise! I know how hard the actors and volunteers work. And I know how dedicated these people are. Not enjoying one show should not reflect on the theater in general. We all have plays that we like or don't like. The theater itself is a wonderful venue. Not only are the seats comfortable, but there is a seating area patrons can enjoy before the show and during intermissions. It's like a comfortable home where folks sit and visit. If you haven't been there, give it a try. I think that, like me, you'll go back again and again and may even decide to volunteer! read more

My wife and I attended the Saturday night performance of Cowgirls. It was our first time visiting this venue. It's in Poway, so be prepared for a bit of a drive if you live in PB or something. If you're in the MM/SR/PQ/RB area, it's not a far drive at all, and definitely worth it! We weren't quite sure what to expect since we bought tickets online and it said seating was general admission. We showed up 35 minutes early to assess the situation and make sure we were going to get decent seats. To our surprise, there weren't too many cars in the parking lot. Had we been duped into paying for a crappy performance that nobody else was going to show up for? Absolutely not! It turns out that seating is not general admission, but assigned when you buy your tickets. So all the regular attenders showed up 10 minutes before curtain. The lobby (with snack bar!) was decorated to match the Cowgirls theme which was a nice touch. The snackbar is a "donations only" style where you could get some coffee, water, soda, candy, snacks, etc. and donate what you felt the items were worth. This is pretty typical of most smaller theaters. When the show started, the theater was filled to roughly half capacity. The stage is a perfect size for small, intimate performances. Cowgirls had a cast of 6 women and I felt the stage was close to capacity when all 6 performers were on stage at once. The set design was creative for a static design. If you're looking for a fun night out give this place a try. If you're just getting your toes wet in the theater scene, this is a great place to start as the tickets are inexpensive and the performers and staff are very friendly and love to interact with the patrons. read more

What a great community theater. I must have seen at least 15 plays here in total and I enjoyed every one of them. There is a nice "waiting room" with comfortable seating and it is decorated with posters from past productions. There are also snacks available. I am always amazed by what wonderful performances come from the hard work of people who have theater in their blood. This is all done on a volunteer basis. I saw the drama GOD COMMITTEE which they performed in March. Well cast and perfectly executed! read more

We were invited to see the show with some friends last night and liked the description of the play. It's a small venue and has a rustic artsy atmosphere upstairs in the lobby. My friend had attended with someone previously who needed the elevator and that's accessed from the rear of the building where you can also park. I was impressed by the stage set with a lot of detail of a courtroom and even the state seal behind the judge's bench. The cast was very good and I was impressed by the star, Andrea Acuna, especially. It was moving and the era was a great experience from the 70's and women's rights beginning to evolve. All the cast was expertly chosen and a black woman as the judge was convincingly portrayed by Denise Griffin. David Dartt was able to project the unwavering condescension you would expect from a Bellevue psychiatrist. I hated him appropriately! Claudia projected mental illness from the opening scene and evolved into a legal genius literally trying to save her own life! Pete Zanko as the defense attorney delivered a perfectly timed barb at the Dr. on the stand that was laugh out loud comedy! Bravo! We're conditioned to tune in to court room drama at high life stakes and this play has all the ingredients; High drama legal twists, life controlling government overreach, murder, mental breakdowns, family drama, outrageous abuses, and sex. I had to whisper that Denis Floyd's character when on the "stand" struck me as a Robert Wagner look-alike at certain angles and moments of speech. Claudia rattles off chapter and verse of the legal statutes pertaining to her case without hesitation and then with a stark contrast describes the expertise of a high end escort to the D.A. that would make a sailor blush. parental warning; Howard Stern shock talk! People deny it but they will tune in for the titillating tease. We saw so many stinkers at the high end hoity toity La Jolla Playhouse that we no longer go there. It got too artsy and offensive on a regular basis. This was great to find this level of entertainment in the "The City in the Country" that we call home. Go see it and support local theater. There's some great talent there. read more

After 12 years of attending and volunteering at Powpac, I am still blown away at the talent and commitment of all involved. If you love live theater or have never attended a live play this is the place for you. read more

Didn't care for the play and actors were average at best. I never try to tear down actors, but play was at a high school level. Sorry, theater was small and nice, people had to figure out seating assignments luckily only 1/2 theater was sold out. read more

The acoustics are great...the ticket prices fair...and parking is NO problem and free. And lots of leg room unlike other theaters.

An intimate theater space with fabulous site lines and a wonderful sound system! PowPAC's goal is to provide the highest possible production values at an affordable ticket price. The theater is located right in the heart of Poway, convenient to a variety of restaurants and with acres of free parking. There is also an elevator in the rear of the building for anyone who can't manage the stairs.
