It had been about 25 years since I last touched a ballet barre. After three adult beginner classes…read moreso far, I want to yelp my awesome experience with Southern California Ballet. I'm not a dance mom (yet). Just an older gal dancing in her socks at this conveniently located studio. Our class is a wonderful range of ages and women. I love that. We may giggle as we fumble the steps and lose our balance... but the class offers exactly what it needs to offer. Fun and movement. Me and about 14 others signed up via the Poway Adult School... but the studio offers drop in classes directly as well. I really hope to try them - they just don't jive with my mommy and work schedule like the Thursday am class has. But I'm hopeful they add more classes or I can somehow make it work. This class has been such a reawakening. When you dance as a child and young adult... and quit... you don't have many outlets for enjoying it after the classes and recitals stop. You don't round up the friends like you do for a game of golf or basketball. Enter... the adult dance class. Boom. Toby, our teacher, is wonderful. He is easy-going and clearly talented. I liked the neat little background he gave us on ballet too. The music is a fun mix of contemporary songs disguised in ballet music. Fun. So much better than I remember as a kid. While I do have some lingering memories of dance... my joints and muscles are in a complete state of disrepair. Frankly, it makes me extra happy to be in the beginner's class. At times it is a bit of a whirlwind, but with continued repetition it sinks in. "Osmosis" as Toby says. So I try not to worry about the terms. I just enjoy each class, the break in my chaotic day... and dance (in between the hip cramps and forgotten steps).

They take their ballet seriously and are excellent at teaching little girls about proper poise and posture. Ms. Katie is a wonderful teacher with the right mix of stern and playful in working with 3 & 4 year old kids.

Still a wonderfully nurturing dance studio with immensely patient and dedicated teachers and staff…read more It's been 9 years, and the studio has grown in space and homegrown talent, which is evident in the ambitious goals the studio successfully executes each year. This is a ballet-based studio with a growing musical theater program, and fun recreational/non-competitive class offerings in ballet, jazz, contemporary, modern, hip hop and even pilates reformer. The ballet side includes a pre-pro program that is intended to nurture students with professional dance aspirations or just want to be in "club level" ballet (i.e. your young 9 year old kid will be there 2-3 times a week and your 12/13+ tween will be there 4/5 times a week multiple hours a day. Dancers participating in shows will have Saturday rehearsals). The AD has an annual assessment (for pre-pro students) to assess goals and steps needed to achieve them. Recently, many of these students have been invited to well known ballet SIs, including PNB, PBT, SAB, and ABT. The AD further supports their school/ballet balance and many of the pre-pro dancers have been waived out of PE through OCIS (Off Campus Independent Study). Annually, the staff presents "the Nutcracker" where all roles (except 1-2 adult male roles, which are professionally filled) are casted by their classically trained students. Over the last 3 years, they've also presented a shorter storybook ballet of similar caliber. Every year we've been here, there has been an end of year recital series, which is the main opportunity for the non-ballet students to present what they've learned in choreographed pieces. The studio has grown to include a musical theater program, which also provides opportunities to shine in "Mini Musicals". Yes, the hallways can be a little "extra", but that's what happens when students love the place so much that they are there for multiple classes in the afternoons, and on rehearsal weekends. And yes, dance can be pricey, but my experience is that the rec level classes are comparable to any other rec level activity my other kid has done with *professional* teachers, it's obviously more expensive than little league or soccer which are volunteer coached. Further, pricing is on a tiered structure, where "the more classes you take, the cheaper your 5th, 6th, 7th, etc class is." And yes - sounds nuts, but many of the pre-pro kids love it there enough that they're there for that many classes. Lastly, I didn't realize how grateful I am for this until my daughter got older, but the owners refuse to allow revealing costumes and uniforms. You'll find the students in leotards/tights, athleisure wear, and tasteful recital costumes - not a booty short or bra/crop top in sight, as I wish dance culture would be. Overall, a great place to be for those with professional ballet aspirations (and who want to be challenged appropriately), or who want to learn other styles for enjoyment without the expectation to compete.

The evening was wonderful and we look forward to going again…read more The instructors work so well with the students.

My daughter started dancing at this studio when she was 3. She transferred her from another studio due to it's laid back atmosphere. The other studio was a competing studio and the pressure was just too much for a 3 year old . This studio while it is not a competing studio is still ran with the same professionalism you would expect. They put on 2 wonderful performances every year. Kelley puts great thought into the placement of each girl in her studio. She looks at their age, abilities, NOT just how long they have been dancing. To say you have been dancing a year doesn't necessarily mean you have acquired the skills. The girls also want to be placed in a class with their peers and not with girls several years older or younger then them. There are big differences between a 7 year old and a 13 year old. Kelley tried to move those girls into the appropriate classes and they were NOT the baby classes and instead Kelley was the one who was verbally assaulted by her. Whether or not the class was at capacity had no bearing on her daughter being in the class. I truly hope that you take the time out to check out this studio for your daughter(s). It is a warm loving studio. The kids all respect and appreciate one another. You do not see any of the cattyiness you often see with girls here. Everyone has a different personality, style, social interests and yet for the hour they dance they are together as one.
