I had a reservation for 8:30pm for a fado show. They were nice and didn't give me any issues for coming by myself even though the reservation was for two people. The inside is very charming and cozy. The fado show was incredible. The singers and instrumentalists did a fantastic job and although I couldn't understand the words, it was still quite beautiful and moving. The performers did take fairly long breaks between songs as an FYI. I wasn't super hungry so I did get some small snacks and a dessert along with some amarguinha and they really hit the spot. read more

We chose this place because it was billed as "trendy fado" and it was an easy ramble from our hotel in the Baixa district. I understand that if you are looking for a more "authentic" experience the Chiado and Bairro Alto are a better place to seek that out. That said-- we thoroughly enjoyed the meal and fado here even though we were prepared for it to feel kitschy and touristy. We arrived around 8 pm for the 8:30 show and were able to get in with no reservation for a table of 6. No idea if that is the norm or not. The next thing you need to know is that the menu here is more sharing plates than entree style meals. Oddly, we had a hard time getting our server to take the order from our whole table of 6. He would take one or two items and then dash off. I am unsure if this is because their kitchen is tiny or what. That said-- the food we ordered was all delicious. The tuna steak and polenta/cheese dish particularly got high marks. Fado is enjoyed in silence. Some in our group were initially a little put-off by the "lecture" at the front door to be silent during the show. But, honestly, the show itself was so captivating, I don't think anyone was tempted to chat. But, on the topic of silence, the restaurant will only take/serve orders during breaks in the show. The cadence is 20 minutes of music and then a 20 minute break. I think there were 3-4 "sets" during the evening. What a delightful intro to Fado! An intimate, acoustically pleasing, friendly venue in which to have small plates, wine or cocktails and listen to excellent Fado music! We ordered a blend of the cheese plate and charcuterie, and a large bowl of roasted vegetables- delicious! Ordered shrimp croquette and cheese . Shrimp was very good . Not to crazy about the cheese . Then we ordered pica pao . Bit too salty for us . Ordered coriander rice. Was good . Octopus tempura was good came with a spicy mayo . Fado singers there were three . The lady singer didn't have much vibrato. But towards the end she sang really good . Liked the two instrumental players . They also charge you $4.00 each for the two instrumentalists . Overall a good experience. Our total bill was 50.00 euros . Another hidden gem in Lisbon! Upon a friend's recommendation, we decided to experience a local tradition on a Friday night. Be sure to make a reservation for 8pm for the local fado performance! You're able to order tapas dishes before the show starts, and only during the 2-3 breaks once it has begun. The 4 dishes were pretty tasty overall, all washed down with a dark beer, but the highlight of the night was definitely the fado performance. We came here to hear some Fado and eat some Portuguese food. The reservation details were very specific and almost harsh about us arriving on time to be seated at 7:30pm for the first seating. The servers were a bit preoccupied and almost surly and we had to hang for a few minutes before being told to select a table for two. We sat for almost 20 minutes before we had our order taken. Did I mention that they were very specific that we needed to leave promptly at 9:30pm for the next seating? Additionally, the venue is very hot as it appeared the A/C was straining. Finally the wine comes and then two of our three dishes. The food was good, we had the veggie fritters, the eggplant schnitzel, and the cod. The third dish came after a reminder to the wait staff. The show did not start at 8:15pm as advertised as the singer was stuck in Lisbon traffic -- really? I've been to plenty of shows in New York, London, Paris, Istanbul, and LA where the traffic can be equally notorious and that as a reason, would NOT cut it. Finally the two guitarists that were there realized the show must go on and played some instrumental Fado for about 10 minutes starting at about 8:45pm. Eventually, the Female vocalist arrived and she was lovely but only sang about three or four songs and took a break. We were supposed to have two sets in the time between 8:15pm to 9:30pm. 9:30pm rolled around and while they didn't ask us to leave, we had an early day the next day and had to leave. The bill came and it was about €85 all in - no reduction for the 30-minute delay. Ambiance-wise this is more a "new age" Fado venue I guess, with staff in torn jeans, sporting lots of tats, piercings, and attitude - I've got no problem with this in general and would be fine at a place like a rock club but not quite what I was expecting for a Fado experience. read more

Came here during my solo trip to Lisbon. I was in search for an authentic Portuguese dish and I found one here! I had a dish called Feijoada which is a bean stew with meat. inordered a side of rice which was so buttery and good! I had mine with calamari and it was delicious! The staff was amazing and helpful! This establishment is located right in the popular pink street, so it is easy to find. There is outdoor seating, which was wonderful for me since the weather was nice (and also great for people watching haha). I came during the day so it wasn't busy. What a lovely intimate space to Diane and experience Fado music. It is unique in that it is as much about the music as it is about the tapas. The manager and staff were very accommodating and helpful. The pork cheeks in wine sauce were amazingly tender and tasty. I would also recommend the grilled sardine bruschetta. My mom and I made a reservation for dinner and Fado and had an amazing time! The food we ate was pretty good! The bean stew was hearty, the chicken legs were so moist and full of flavor, and the codfish was cooked well but just beware that it's quite salty. The Fado singer was male and had such a full voice. Great experience! The Fado performers were excellent- confident and relaxed. The singer's voice was extremely powerful and evocative. Totally beautiful. As for the food, everything was very good to excellent. I love the rocket salad, tomato stew, cod with chick peas to name a few. The red wine sangria was very good, as was the port that followed. Heck yes, this is how you start a vacation. We read about Povo in the NYT Travel section, and it totally delivered on the promise of being a laid-back spot with creative Portugese food and great people watching on this happening pedestrian street. It feels moderately hipster, not too touristy, and very inviting. Grab a spot on the sidewalk patio, and sip some caipis, indulge in some melty local cheese, and order anything with cod. Their version was braised to succulent perfection, more like a steak than a filet. Prices were super reasonable, and portions were generous. When lots of Lisbon spots have you cooped up inside, it's refreshing to chill al fresco while enjoying some Portugese staples. While it doesn't have the waterfront views that other spots offer, it does have a cool back-alley vibe with plenty of foot traffic to feel exciting. I'd go back to Povo in a heartbeat! read more

Nice spot for fado and food. Doesn't feel like a tourist trap even with a lot of tourists there -- it's fairly small and intimate. The steak with mustard sauce (4/5) - is worth trying. The sauce is very flavorful. The deep fried green beans (3/5) are tasty but oily. The singing here and music is beautiful but they do about 2-3 songs and then take 30 minute break. I visited this place with a group of 8 persons. And to be honest: this was one of the best places to enjoy a good cocktail in Lisbon. I've ordered a mojito, but there was no mint left. We emailed about a week in advance of our trip to reserve a table for 4 on Saturday night to experience their Fado. We loved that they have young up and coming Fado artists, which makes it feel a little more hip and local than some of the other Fado places we looked into. The music was magical and the ambiance of this place is spectacular. We enjoyed everything we ordered, especially the Octopus salad. They only had one singer that was bad to the point that we just left and other people did as well. So far no restaurant with Fado music compares to Adega Machado in my opinion is the best and the food is very good. I stumbled across Povo on my online search for fado places in Lisbon. I saw that they have amatuer fado performances on Sundays, and marked this as a place to visit. Truth is I have never heard fado music, and I really do not want it to be a "tourist trap" experience with high price and bad food. So last Sunday my friend and I stopped in late (their website listed 1st performance at 9:30pm, we arrived at almost 11). Luckily we have not missed the last set and they were still serving food. We were starving, and they have good food here. They also have better selection of wine (not just house wine like most places). We had a bottle of douro (after we each had a glass of wine), cheese & bread, Pica Pau (a traditional meat strip dish), and a pork tenderloin with clams served on mashed potato dish and the final bill was €49 - one of the more expensive meal we had in Lisbon. The atmosphere was chill, the fado performance was entertaining (we caught the last 2 short sets, about 4-5 songs total), and we very much enjoyed our evening. This place is on a happening block, FYI. Right next to it are several bars (with unnecessarily loud rock music - I could barely hear the fado so I had to move away from the closed window). If it's late night and you need a place to chill/hangout, definitely stop by this area. read more

This was such a magical little place to start our European adventure in Lisbon. We sat outside for dinner and started with the best bread and olive oil we'd have all week. It was so fresh and the oil was flavorful. The olives were amazing too! For dinner I had a zucchini and butternut squash dish that I am not 100% sure was vegan. The zucchini turned out to be in croquette form, and when I had originally asked about it, the waitresses response was, "Yes, zucchini is a vegetable." My travel MO is "try your best and go with the flow." I shared the croquettes with my family and went to town on the butternut squash puree with the perfect bread. Heavenly! We went for a fado show, the singer and guitarists were very very good. We enjoyed the music very much. We ordered the a salad (arugula , walnut, honey, and goat cheese), tempura green beans, and cod. The salad and beans were absolutely delicious. We expected a piece of fish with the cod but were given a bunch of shredded fish, egg, potato, and onion. This would've been slightly okay had we even been able to find the cod in the dish. It gave both of us bad stomach aches and we did not feel well. We asked our waitress, Carolina (very sweet) if we could exchange this for something else as we did not want this item and did not enjoy it. They could not do this for us even though we barely touched it. Definitely watch what you order here as I guess it is traditional Portuguese food. We came here for our first fado night and some legit Portuguese tapas and we couldn't have picked a better place. While the music was great, the food was even more spectacular. The food and music couldn't even compare to Povo Lisboa. Went back on my third night in Lisbon and Povo Lisboa did not disappoint yet again .
