The Bridges was opened in the Eighties, turning what was several open-air streets into one covered…read moremall. In 2000 it was extended and with that, Debenhams was opened. There are several eateries and coffee shops in the Bridges, such as Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, Nudo, Caffé Nero, and because it's north east England, two Greggs outlets ;-) There's also two cafes in Debenhams and one on the top floor of Waterstones. There's a good-sized Tesco and an Iceland in the mall, as well as a M&S nearby, so you do not need to leave the city centre to buy groceries. Though not a part of the mall itself, three apartment blocks sit beside the Bridges. If you've got a small fortune going spare, there's worse places to live - the city's just downstairs! Despite recent regeneration, the outdoor shopping streets of Sunderland leave a lot to be desired. The mall is still the 'big city' part of Sunderland, however if you want more choice or more independent shops, it's worth taking the trip into Newcastle.

The food and prices in Iceland are fab. The fruit and veg is fresh but not the cheapest around. If your out shopping for clothes and things, it's really conveinient to pop into Iceland to pick up any thing you need. There is often special offers on the food, buy 3 for £5 etc. If you get to the till the staff will always tell you if you shoul buy something else to save money. Parking wise you would need to park in the bridges car park. It costs £1.10 an hour, but there are plenty of spaces. No parent and child bays but the bays are really big.

Shoe Zone is a chain of high street stores which sell discounted shoes and bags for all the family…read more I have found that the quality of their shoes is rather hit-and-miss. However the average price per pair is around £7 so you can't really grumble! They cater for ladies size 3-9 -- I find that they are in the minority of value shoe shops which sell size 9 shoes at affordable prices so they definitely get my approval. I find that in general the sizing is quite small, however, some styles do run large and when I do find a size 9 that fits, I buy a few pairs. Their sales are also pretty good - after xmas I have found some great sub-£10 boots in my size, as well as flat pumps for as little as £3 per pair. They also have some branded mens shoes at a fraction of what they cost in catalogues and sports shops. All in all the quality is not outstanding but if you are looking for a cheap pair of stylish shoes for a night out or casual shoes for work, then I definitely recommend Shoe Zone.

My sister gets school shoes from here, because she will go through many pairs in a year and they are cheap. I bought a pair of trainers from here for the gym as I was only going to wear them once a week. I tend not to shop here regularly, because they don't really have any pretty shows. I always think the outside of it looks a little tatty and tired Like the signs need updating or something, the windows washed. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it seems to have lost its spark in recent years. At one time it was the place to get cheap household stuff such as branded paint, wall coverings, plumbing items, etc etc. Nowadays it has a lot more competition as all of the shops are in a bit of a pricing war! Its competitors have caught up with it in terms of value for money. Nevertheless Wilkos is still good for discounted food items. Its DIY items are also reasonably price, though probably the same prices as many other high street stores nowadays.

Everything is quite cheap, and you can sometimes get cheap tat but also find some good labels in there too! It has 3 floors and each floor has something different to offer. I used this store when i got invited to a 70s fancy dress…read more The store is on a side street just off the bridges i parked in the bridges car park and walked to this shop as you cant get parked outside the shop without getting a parking ticket. The shop has loads to choose from and the costume are all fab i spent ages trying them on in the changing rooms. On the counter there are many files for you to look through with all the costumes in. They have a fantastic shoe section i got some great spice girl type boots blue glittery. They also have a good range of hen and stag items aswell as a joke section. The prices are the best in the area because i checked them all out before i went, and they also do great discounts if a few people get theres at the same time.
