L'Oranger - Geneva, 4.38pm. The urge to head to the pool is starting to be palpable in the offices. At L'Oranger, come and have a refreshing cocktail.

This is definitely not a place for large groups. Only one table is large enough to seat 5 people comfortably. I love how the owners have made this small space seem larger and brighter with the great use of light and mirrors. You are also welcomed by the mouth watering pastries in a large glass case. Even though we didn't have reservations we were in welcomed with smiles, and shown to a table, it was my lucky day! The menu changes each day, and you can choose from a plat du jour, salads, other cooked lunch dishes, or sandwiches highlighted on the other side. They also have a open wine to purchase by the glass highlighted on the menu. TIP: A carafe of tap water costs 2CHF. We took the plat du jour for only 19 CHF and it was served with a basket of delicious bread. The portions were quite large and definitely fill you up for the rest of the day. The plat du jour was a turkey pasta w/ basilic lemon sauce. It was the first time I had turkey in a pasta, yet it was perfection! Everything was fresh and juicy and melted in my mouth. YUMMY! We couldn't exit without trying a pastry. We tried the tarte tatin. One of the best I have had! I will definitely be back here again for a visit. Plus, I still have to try their homemade hot chocolate which they were highlighting!!

My favourite incident, was when a friend talked me into ordering lunch to stay. We ordered from a waiter, with menus, who wrote something down on a pad. It was busy, as it was a lovely day and everyone enjoying the sun. 1 hour later, still no food. The waiter said 'yes, yes'. 20 minutes more, no food. Asked the woman, who looked incredulous and said the kitchen was closed. I told her that we had ordered some time back, and she checked but there was no more food. The waiter had vaporised. Then the maven in charge (very nasty piece of work indeed that one) came over and said when she sat us down, we didn't say we wanted to eat. !!!!! I suggested that perhaps the waiter who gave us menus and took our order got that idea. But maybe I had hallucinated the whole thing. They make nice croissants and bread, but it is expensive, so I suggest going to the Co-op nearby or even better Le Pain Quotidien around the corner.

My curiosity got the best of me, and I had to stop and try what was obviously a local favorite lunch time spot. The space inside is tiny, and with all the bodies, it wasn't clear for a newbie what the typical protocol here was, and thus felt a bit chaotic. Sit down in the small tea room area, or wait in line and order something pre-made from behind the glass case. Now that I have experienced the different options available, I think my second visit will be much more enjoyable. Also, it wasn't clearly noted what the different sandwich or salad choices were, or how much they cost. Your options are: 1.Sit down first and wait to be handed a special menu with items not located behind the glass case (salads/Croque Madame/Croque Monsieur/beverages). Downside is that it could take a bit to get the menu as this place is busy and there are only 3 people serving/working behind the glass case. Also, the menu DOES NOT include items behind the glass case. There is a list on a small chalkboard on the far end wall of the tea room noting their special salads of the day. 2.Stand in line and order something from behind the glass case and mention you are eating there. There are no signs noting this, but if you are eating there they can include a fresh petite side salad to go with your sandwich or quiche. If you do this, I would probably first grab a table as it might not be free by the time you get out of the line. 3.Stand in line and order something to take away. I chose option 2, and had an amazing salmon vegetable quiche, w/ a carrot side salad. I followed that up with an espresso (NOT NESPRESSO - Bonus!), and their house specialty apple tarte. Everything was fresh and delicious. I definitely would like to go back, as the salads looked amazing, and those seemed to be the popular option as most people seemed to be getting them. TIP: By 12:20 when I arrived, the glass case was already half empty. If you want a good selection to choose from arrive a bit early. Between 12:20 and 1pm, there was constant line of people. Experience would have been even better if things were just a bit more organized and laid out better.
