Just a bit of the unique scenery here at Le Vouivre (The Wyvern).

I was fortunate enough to have an extra day in Geneva before the conference I traveled here for began. Because life is already busy enough, I opted for a low-key day of strolling about the city, exploring, and just trying to take everything in from the perspective a local. Enter La Vouivre. From the picture I posted, as well as the others already on its page, you can tell it has flair. I should've documented more than some chairs and mirrors, but the muffin (and subsequent pastry) I ordered were gone so fast, not even your high-end Nikon D4S could've captured it. Coffee was tasty and just what a guy whose internal clock was still on D.C. time needed. Not one chair in the place matched another, with all sorts of dining chairs, church pews, and comfy stuffed living room chairs allowing guests to sit back and relax or huddle attentively around a table to discuss business. Conversations in English (British and American and broken), French, and German were ongoing as friends enjoyed one another's company, colleagues got caught up, and couples shared a sweet treat to start their day!

I like this place for the un matching old world seating and decor. My coffee was pretty good and they have the standard case of pastries plus a few different things like a green tea sable cookie....The classical music plays..A bit too loudly in the AM for me but I guess it's a nice touch.

I had been avoiding BdB because it seemed a bit too organized and a bit too clean to have a real neighborhood feel. They had many tempting pastries and chocolates that were tastefully presented in a large display, but (1) it was 7:30 am and too early for a piece of tart or a slice of cake, and (2) I had decided to sample the croissant at each bakery for a fair comparison. Although admittedly I did cheat a little bit and get a croissant des amades (CHF2.20--quite reasonable!). I was expecting a more manufactured taste than the small hole-in-the-wall bakery that I visited last week, considering the larger scale of BdB. Surprisingly, the croissant had a nice, slightly imperfect density and light sticky glaze that made it evident that they were home-made, and the almond paste inside was also a good texture of graininess. In fact, it tasted much fresher than the croissant I had purchased at the smaller bakery. As there are plenty of other bakeries in the area that I have yet to visit as I continue on my quest, I cannot say at this point that I've found my neighborhood baker. But if I'm looking for a little treat, I would not hesitate to go back to BdB to try their many other tasty-looking offerings.

It's a cute, hip. chic cafe that serves, well, chou pastries! They have your typical cream puffs with different flavors, and savory eclairs, which I found very surprising! They also have cute little chouquettes and other viennoiseries. I got the Caramel Buree Sale and Black Sesame chou (2,80 each), and the Chèvre Frais (fresh goat cheese) savory eclair (5,50). All of them were presented beautifully, and WOW. If I had all the money in the world, I might spend all of it on these chou pastries!! the Caramel Buree Sale was the perfect sweetness - just a little bit salty and very very rich and smooth caramel. The Black Sesame was also so amazing. Much sweeter than the Caramel, but it was so creamy and the black sesame flavor was very prominent. The savor eclair was also so devine! the goat cheese paired very well with the artichoke, and the carrots and pomegranate made a nice addition to it. The chou pastry itself was just amazing, and not sweetened, which made it ideal for both the sweet and the savory. So buttery, slightly crisp (but not crispy, if you know what I mean) on the outside and soft (but not mushy) on the inside. I also got two chouquettes (,50 each) for the road because my experience with the first three items were just so darn good. Little did I know that they would barely last 10 seconds, because they were so. frickin. good. I got the plain sugar and chocolate chouquette (they also have an almond flavor), and as i took my first bite of the plain sugar one, I literally said "holy hell" out loud because i was so startled at how good it was. It was light and airy, but also just a little creamy inside. The chocolate one was just as good as the sugar one. I think I easily could have devoured a dozen and not feel the slightest bit guilty. If I lived in Geneva, you'd bet everything that I would be a frequent customer, especially because they rotate their chou flavors constantly, so you'd always get to try a new flavor! The staff was also very kind. For the majority of the time I was there, it was just one girl hustling the floor, and yet she took the time to take my photo when I asked her.

We got there after the morning/early afternoon rush on a Saturday so many of the options were sold out. What remained was good (small savory eclair-type sandwiches that were interesting - most seemed to have Mediterranean-type seasonings/ingredients so a little more interesting and tasty than what you'd find at some traditional boulangerie/cafe). Worth stopping by if you're in that part of the city.
