Came here for a Handbuilding Sampler class and loved it!…read more Prior to this class, my only knowledge of pottery was on theoretical level for wheel and not for handbuilding. The instructor was really nice, helpful and patient. She went through the basic techniques with the class first. And then we were each working on our own pottery/project, she offered great tips and assistance throughout. It was kinda like adult play doh lol After you're done, they would bake your items for you and you get to choose from 4 different colors: Blues (Darker and Lighter), Earthy brown/yellow ish, white. It could take couple weeks for it to be done and then you could pickup. (I think mine took about a week or so.) Also had a tour of the place. This place has a long history and their oven is the old fashioned gas oven opposed the more modern electric ones. As a result, the glaze and color of each batch would vary and therefore produce unique results!

She is a pottery wizard with tons of experience and has a masters in ceramics - no glass in her house! So it's BYOB. Amazing. The two of us brought 1 bottle of champagne and 1 bottle of white; standard. The class was small and only 2 others where there and they also brought booze: ONE bottle of beer. WTF!? I guess they think BYOB means Bring Your One Beer (and share it). Losers. Anyways, the class is awesome and Jamie provides tons of guidance since I haven't done pottery since 2nd grade. You're given as many clumps of clay as you wish with the game plan to skillfully mold it into a perfectly symmetrical vase/pint cup/bowl -- this proved impossible to master, even with my skills. The end result was often missing a chromosome and needed serious help! Even though the finished products were less than stellar, it was a blast to learn how to mold clay into not art. The booze helped and my pandora station was insanely awesome! We didn't sit near the BYOB rookies and that was a big plus. Sucks to suck. Cons: you don't get to fire the finished result or take it home with you at the end. Biggest negative, you're supposed to clean up your station at the end. No thank you! Minus 1 star. I'd go here again and it's a great date spot or place to bring a group of people who know what BYOB means!

I wanted to tuft a rug for a gift, and I remembered Queens CM Sam mentioning this studio (see her…read morebubble tea rug!). It was easy to book online. I opted for a custom design (they have some pretty neat standard designs, but I wanted something specific), and uploaded 3 design options when I booked. They reached out to me by email within 1.5 weeks for approval, and my design was ready and sketched out on canvas when I arrived. Parking wasn't difficult, but make sure to read the street signs, because some streets are no parking or standing during the day! I arrived early (make sure to take the elevator!) and after confirming my name and filling out the liability form, I was welcomed to browse the yarn colors. They had picked some out already for my design, but I was free to swap any out. You can even change out the colors for the standard designs, as my fellow tuft-ers chose to do. Thanks to Taylor for teaching us the ropes (we were first timers!) and helping us through the whole experience! She was mostly hands off once we got started, but was open to helping out. Towards the end, she looked over our rugs and helped by pointing out parts that could be filled more so that the rug comes out much nicer. Note: you are free to bring food and drinks, but there is limited space on the table. I ate prior to arriving, but did have a drink with no issues. Be prepared to be there for at least a couple hours. I spent a little over 3 hours tufting their 27x27" frame (as did my fellow tuft-ers). They finish your rug by trimming, gluing and shaving it, which is supposed to take 3-6 weeks. I got antsy at the 6 week mark, so I sent them an email. I received an email the following day that my rug was ready for pick up (phew!). You can request for it to be delivered for a fee, but I wanted to pickup, so I went the following day. Pickup was smooth and very friendly. She helped roll up my rug and secure with a yarn for easy transport. My rug came out better than I expected! Overall, a cool and fun experience for a newbie like me!

Super fun! The instructor gives a short tutorial and she's around for any questions. It takes a…read morewhile to get use to the feel of the tufting gun but you get the hang of it after a while. It's good to practice for a bit on the scrap before you start on the pattern so that you get the feel of the pressure and how to control the direction of the gun. The class itself is set for 2 hrs but most people are allowed to stay after to finish. Then you pick it up 3 weeks later for the studio to glue shave and have it set.

It was so fun getting to make our first potteries together, and the instructor, Iso was such a vibe; I loved her quirky uplifting spirit. She even made me a cute pottery to take home. She did her best to teach us the basics, but when there's a group of 9 people, I think it's just difficult to tend to everyone, so some people were struggling. I don't think anyone in my party left feeling satisfied with their work. It also sucked that a chunk of our booked time was allotted for cleaning up. It seems like that's the norm for pottery classes, but again, with that many of us, we wasted a lot of time just trying to take turns at the sink to clean up. Still, the experience was not bad at this point. We were excited to see the final results once they were glazed and colored. However, everything went downhill after we left the place. When I went there to pick up the potteries, everything was a mess. It was super difficult trying to find everyone's work admist a bunch of other potteries. With zero organization, it's no wonder they lost my sister's. So, they said they'll try to look for it and if they can't find it, they'll make her a new one. While it's nice that they rectified the situation by offering to make her a new one, that really defeats the purpose of taking the pottery class. Why not just go to the ceramics store instead? It would've been better if they offered to give her a free class to make a new one. At the end of it all, they couldn't find her work, so they made her a new one. But the process to receiving that new one took a while.

There is a point system for base materials and then you can use whatever you want for however long additionally they are a coworker space so you can come here and buy a basic package and work. additionally, they have snacks for sale as well as free tea and coffee. They have everything that you could need and everyone who is there is super sweet. Additionally, decor is great. It's super cozy. The lighting is dark but they have lights/little lamps that you can use. They also have water and a sink for the art supplies. You can do a basic package or add a clay package. There is an additional fee for firing the clay.

We learned everything we needed to know as our instructor took us step by step through what we had to do to create our candles. It was a really great experience. You'd feel so lucky to be in New York, because you have CBA here. I have taken a few courses at the bindery throughout the years and they were all extremely worthy. You get top notch masters in the book art world as your instructors: Barbara Mauriello, Carolyn Chadwick... My personal favorite has always been Susan Mills. She's super friendly and patient. She has given me a lot of wonderful techniques that I'd never forget. For most classes, you will have the opportunities to use their huge collection of fabric and decorative paper. I stumbled upon CBA's classes through a friend's mention, started making books, and now I can't stop. Take a tour, and check out some fantastic work that they have on display regularly.
