My class is taught by Abby on Wednesdays, who is really patient, an excellent instructor, and an incredible potter herself. The other teachers are great too - I've admired all their work on the greenware rack and have heard good things from other students. As for price, it's very reasonable - $480 for 6 weeks and you can do benchtime if you need or miss a class. For me it's totally worth it to have a little refuge in my neighborhood to hang out and make things. I've already replaced a bunch of my bowls and mugs with handmade bowls and mugs and my friends are now asking me to make them things since I've gotten a lot better since I first started. If you're thinking about signing up - DO IT! It's so worth it.

First, they're more expensive than most other studios in New York City. Earthworks is also more tight and cramped than others. There is little room to move around and no place to set your toolbox that is not in someone's way. WORST of all it's a very uptight place with strange, unnecessary, rigid rules and strict, odd policies. There is a high-strung vibe in this studio and you can feel it when you walk through the front door. There is a new owner and a fish stinks from the head. And why post images on social media of beautiful work that was NOT created or photographed in this studio? They steal images from the internet and post as their own. What does that tell you? There are other studios in the city. PLEASE don't come here.

This is my honest review after attending COUPLES Night at Mugi Pottery…read more First, the studio was tall, well lit, ventilated, and we were greeted kindly by the 2 instructors. They checked our COVID vaccination card; process was smooth and seamless. For couples night, we each were given a large slab of clay, 2 rolling pins, and tools for only 1 person. There is NO wheel spinning and the clay comes out of the wash so you stay relatively clean (minus hands). I suggest you come with tight fitting clothing, hair up for long haired students, and sleeveless top so you can really get into the clay freely. I especially enjoyed that way the class was taught: it was done with several small demonstrations; after each demo we were released to do what was demonstrated, and came back together for the next demo. All the while the instructors were visiting each couple to help answer questions a give advice. I love this way so those who pick up the demo quick (me) can just go at it, while the slower people can get the extra help without bogging down the whole class. The entire class went for a little over 2hrs so there is certainly a time constraint. Overall, the experience was AMAZING! A wonderful way the spend the evening with a loved one. Since we typically like working with our hands and have done similar experiences before- we knew how work together and help each other out. So it's important to understand your partner's strengths and weaknesses so you'll have a happy time guiding and giving affirmation with the creations. I noticed several couple getting annoyed with each other and giving a "do whatever the f' you want" response- lol. PRO TIP: come in with something already conceptualized so you can go right to it. The slab was first roll to make a cylinder, and the creativity goes from there. Size, shape, and what you want to do will help save time towards your finished product (I came home afterwards only coming up with more I could have done to my creation!). Some made stemless mugs, jewelry box with a lid, luminary candle holders, jugs- so much you can do from the starting cylinder shape. Go on YouTube to get the technique in your head, check out Pinterest or print photos/ designs ahead of time- all of which would have helped me on my final project. Only thing I would have loved to see: since it was couples night- maybe some cut roses, maybe some wine, more tools, but overall- I HIGHLY recommend.

As a total beginner, pottery is extremely difficult and challenging and honestly it is not at all intuitive. My friends and I celebrated a birthday at this location, and overall, the experience was fun…read more However, I did find it somewhat difficult to follow the instruction during the session. The placement of the instructor's seat made it challenging for everyone to see her demonstrations clearly. I would recommend building a small raised platform or stage for the instructor to sit on so all participants can easily follow along. This took away from the experience. As a beginner, I also felt I didn't receive enough one-on-one guidance. It may be helpful in the future to have either two instructors or an assistant available to support participants who may need additional help. While I appreciated the generous access to clay during the session, I was disappointed that glazing more than one item came with an additional charge -- especially considering the class is already quite expensive. Allowing participants to glaze at least two pieces would add significant value to the experience. Lastly, I noticed that 30 minutes of the private lesson was dedicated to cleanup. He showed us again while we were working on it since most of us were first timers and gave us some tips. They also have a menu so you can order drinks to enjoy (although this is really for before and after since your hands will be covered in clay during the lesson). After finishing the session, we cleaned up our stations and tools, and then got to pick the glaze for our pieces. My piece hasn't been fired yet but I can update after!

Clayworks is divided into two schools of instruction - 1) 10 week instructor guided courses with unlimited use (during class time and open studio while class term is in session) of two kinds of clay and supplies, 2) monthly rental shelf space with your own golden key to the facility. You can come any time you want except during course time. So the clientele lends itself to potters of all experience. Pros: - loosey goosey honor system, system. Clayworks seems to be run by its potters. There's a lock box where firing fees and course registration costs are dropped. -There's no one looking over your shoulder which lends itself to seemingly limitless possibilities for creativity. This is an environment of very talented artists. Just cruise through the shelves (but don't touch!). -The class sizes are small which allows for more individual instruction. -2 kinds of clay. Fantastic! -Class courses are very reasonably priced - one of the cheapest studios in the NYC area. -The students and renters are a close community. They have BBQs in the garden, bring drinks and breakfast sometimes. The studio has a warm and positive vibe. Everyone's there for the same reason. No drama and everyone wants to help each other. Cons: -There are many different types of wheels which can get confusing if you're just starting out or came from another facility. -You really have to come with your own supplies. Not much is provided for you in the way of molds, decorating devices, tools, etc. -There isn't much room to work and hand build and the slab roller is always covered with junk. This was particularly upsetting to me as I typically incorporate a lot of hand built elements in my wheel thrown work. -There's a limited amount of open studio time for enrolled students, in my opinion. Clayworks is closed on Sunday. I never understood that. -Shelf space rentals can get expensive. You pay by the month and you've really got to be in there consistently to make it worth your dollar. -The studio is also a little out of the way and hard to get to if you don't have a car. Expect to hop on the B71 to Red Hook. That's pretty much the only way unless you like to hoof it from the F train at Carroll St. I enjoyed my time at Clayworks. I made some friends, had a wonderful time but in the end I decided to leave to no fault of Clayworks. I just don't think it was for me but that's not to say it won't be for you, however. I would make the recommendation if someone asked my opinion. I would say, "try it out and see if you like it. I did, but moved on. No harm. No fowl."
