If you know how Korean comfort food works, you know it's all about the broth. Pork bone broth. Beef broth. Chicken broth. Fish broth. All simmering for at least 8-14 hours. To extract the maximum amount of flavors from each protein source. And then combine that with the spices, the veg, and then serving it to the people. Yea, this is the place that clearly gets it right. The restaurant is next to the Song Gong Tofu place and Kung Fu Tea off Old Peachtree Rd where the Assi Market and the Arte coffee shop is. Across the street from the Gu Thai joint. So parking will be an issue because that plaza is always packed. The place is small. Dimly lit, seats roughly 80 people, and very homely and cozy. It's run by a slew of elder aunties who probably know what they're doing. It's been a minute since I had the potato stew or Gamjah Tahng. It's a hearty pork bone broth style soup that is rich, deep, meaty, and just warms you right up. The way they do it here is quite traditional. You can taste the spices they used for the meat. Hints of ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom notes in the pork. The broth itself is spicy, deep, rich, hearty, and definitely gives the mouth feel of the Korean countryside. You don't smell the pork but you can definitely taste the rich fatty pork that the bones have been simmering in for the last day. Then what is new to me is the generous dusting of toasted perilla leaf seed powder that gives an added depth of flavor. It does come a bit bland as there is much of that salty bite so you can add it yourself as you see fit. All in all, it's a great place. I just wish they would serve rice that's proportionate to the bowl of the soup because that soup bowl is HUGE! And disappointed in the lack of potatoes as gamjah is literally translated as "POTATO".
