LONG VERSION: In 2009, after allowing some tunes to bubble in my head for thirty years, I finally worked up the nerve to attempt to download them onto a demo CD. I approached Nightsound Studios and Chris Wimberley, having met Chris while he was supporting local musicians on our community radio, WCOM. He and his engineering team were professional, to-the-point, cost-effective, charming, helpful and attentive. They did precisely what I asked. Produced an eight song demo, to my precise specifications. I'm a prima donna. I get like that. Then Chris and his senior recording engineer sat me down, at their expense, not mine. And told me, bluntly but kindly, that they genuinely saw more potential in my music. And would like to help me discover the sounds they felt I continued to hide within me. For the next five years, they worked with me. 90% of the time they gave, the advice they shared, the nudging they engaged in, they gave pro bono. They very genuinely wanted me to discover myself. To get myself ready, before committing to the potential they saw in me. At one point, I was convinced I was ready. Chris was happy to take my money, but still he was not convinced. He suggested I form a band, to test my music with the public. Didn't want to. Play with a solo guitarist. Didn't want to. I can be stubborn. Cf. prima donna. Chris persisted. What about just dragging out the Casio workstation I used to compose, and letting rip with that? Hmm. Ok. For eighteen months, I performed. Loved it. Found out what the public liked. Developed a finished sound - still only in my head. It's a Casio. Not Taylor Swift's stadium band. And was ready to get back into the studio, to create a more commercial-sounding EP of six of my songs. Nightsound and I have been working on that these past seven months. We are halfway through. It has been an intense, but focused journey. It continues to be. There is no cookie-cutter approach. This is about coaxing a brand new sound out of a reluctant brain. Mine. But Nightsound and their wonderful team are up to the task. Dedicated. Professional. Patient. Quick-witted. Creative. Have there been moments of tension? Of course there have. My son recently snapped his first ever epiphone at the neck clean in half. Never had I seen such destruction and much sobbing took place. Just out of curiosity I gave Marty a call, sent him a few pictures of the guitar and asked - what can ya do. We were asking him to resurrect a fairly new instrument, a service request we've never tried before. He said give him 3 weeks. In an almost surreal experience - Marty was able to completely repair the snapped neck, matched colors, parts needed to replace the damaged ones and a coating job that would rival what any manufacturer puts out. I will also say that his charge was LOW. Far far lower than I expected for such a mess of a job. He loved it. My son loved it. We are 100% recommending everyone we know - even for a simple setup - call Marty and enjoy not having to worry if your intonation is right cause you're not a luthier.

I have taking weekly guitar lessons from Owen for about 18 months since I moved to North Carolina…read morein early 2024. Although I am still very much a beginner, Owen is an excellent teacher and I have been able to see myself progress over time compared to the first time I stepped into his studio and couldn't do much more than play a few very basic chords. Owen has formal musical training and for people like myself who are curious about everything but never exposed to music or playing any instrument until my late 40's he can explain music theory in a way that can be more easily understood by non-musical people. Owen has many remarkable stories from his days as a touring musician and all of the tips and tricks he learned over the years from other musicians, luthiers, guitar techs etc. Owen can watch you play and pick up the smallest details and provide specific practice exercises that help you overcome every challenge that you encounter. Owen is always encouraging and understands that as adult learners we have busy lives and many challenges with long work hours and other commitments we are trying to balance on top of trying to learn to play guitar. You will never have to worry about getting lectured for not practicing enough as he understands that life happens. It helps for people like me who are our own worst critics and always aiming for perfection and never quite happy with our level of play. Owen is also able to help you to record songs once you have gotten to the point where you are ready which has also been a huge learning experience for me. Owen has a group of more advanced students that all play together just as you would rehearse if you were in a band when he deems that you are ready to take that leap of faith to bring your playing to another level. Most importantly, Owen is a good person, and is welcoming of all and is a source of undying encouragement who wants to see you accomplish your goals just as much as you do.

I tried to play the guitar when I was in fifth or sixth grade, and those lessons consisted of endless chord practices, with a few older songs. But, when I met Owen, I knew immediately that this time it was going to be different. Well, first, because he told me so! But, right away there was something very infectious about Owen, and I left that initial meeting knowing that I'd be able to play a song right away. Owen's teaching style is fantastic. His enthusiasm and love of the guitar spill over when he's instructing, and it is infectious. Although I've very new at this, I never feel that I will not be able to attain my goal of someday playing with others! I enjoy practicing and coming to the lessons knowing that he will be excited for any little bit of progress I make during the week. I highly recommend him!
