Penelope, 10, Her medical records show how sick she is, but not how much she still loves life.
Jenn W.

If you are looking for a veterinarian in the Northridge, Chatsworth, Granada Hills or Porter Ranch area, especially if older Yelp reviews are making you hesitant, READ THIS. This practice is under new ownership and is now privately owned and operated by a veterinarian. My experience was completely different from what some older reviews describe. I brought in Penelope, my 10-year-old German Shepherd and soul dog, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy for Stage IV B-cell lymphoma while also dealing with kidney disease and several chronic orthopedic and neurological conditions. Her medical history is extensive, and I came in with A LOT of questions. They spent THREE HOURS with us. Three hours reviewing her history, examining her, going through medications and diagnoses, answering questions, explaining their reasoning, and helping me understand what we should be watching for going forward. I have never received this level of attention from a veterinary practice. The pricing is also remarkable. They are currently offering a two-week promotion with a $0 exam fee, and I was told the regular exam fee afterward will be approximately $75. Anyone paying veterinary bills in this area knows how reasonable that is. The fact that this practice is independently owned also matters to me. I work in private equity and finance professionally, so I understand how ownership structure can influence revenue expectations, margins, staffing, cost controls and organizational culture. Those objectives make sense in many industries. I personally become more cautious when those financial incentives intersect with healthcare and living beings. That does NOT mean veterinarians working for large corporate groups don't care about animals. They absolutely can. But I value finding an independently owned practice where the veterinarian caring for my dog is also directly invested in how the practice operates. Here, I felt the difference. I never felt like Penelope was a number, a revenue opportunity or a list of billable diagnostics. I felt like she was a sick dog standing in front of people who genuinely wanted to help her. What ultimately earned my trust wasn't the price. It was their honesty. During our appointment, they explained the specific changes that could indicate Penelope's quality of life was deteriorating and that it might be time to discuss letting her go. Initially, I was shocked. Then I realized it was probably the single most valuable thing anyone has told me since Penelope was diagnosed with cancer. No one had ever explained it that directly. Not her oncologist, not previous veterinarians, no one. I knew some of it intuitively, but knowing something in your gut and having a medical professional compassionately give you concrete parameters to watch for are very different things. I work in finance, so my brain is extremely quantitative. I spend my days building financial models around assumptions, drivers, and upside, base and downside cases. Without realizing it, I had been trying to create the same framework for Penelope. What does success look like? What is the base case? What does decline look like? What changes the outlook? At what point do we reassess? Most importantly: How will I know when fighting for more time is no longer the same thing as fighting for her? Obviously, Penelope isn't an Excel model, and there will never be a formula that makes that decision for me. But this team gave me something I desperately needed: a framework. They explained what success could look like, what we could reasonably manage, what decline could look like, and what changes should trigger a serious quality-of-life conversation. To me, that is compassion. Compassion isn't always telling an owner everything will be okay. Sometimes it is caring enough about an animal to tell their owner something incredibly difficult BEFORE they are standing in the middle of a crisis. I have spent an extraordinary amount of money on Penelope's healthcare since she was a baby. Over time, I've learned there is a huge difference between asking, "Can we do this test?" and "Will this test meaningfully change how we treat her?" This team understood that distinction. They were transparent about what was worthwhile, what information mattered, and what actually affected Penelope's quality of life. I never felt pressured to spend money simply because another test or service was available. Most importantly, I never felt like they saw a dollar sign when they looked at my dog. They saw Penelope. So if older negative Yelp reviews concern you, look at the dates. I am reviewing the doctors, ownership and team who are there NOW, and my experience was exceptional. They have my business for the rest of Penelope's life and, someday, they will have my business for my next dog's life too.

Welcoming note already made Lucy feel better!

Amazing!! For a Saturday, it's hard to find a clinic especially when urgent. Michael (An MVP receptionist) with excellent customer service won me over that my baby Lucy would be in good hands and accommodated us. The fact that he wrote a cute "Welcome Lucy" on board made me feel that they truly care for fur babies. Dr Ryan - I love him!! Super sweet and very attentive! He took the time to get to know Lucy. The way he was talking to her was awesome. Yup! You're my new vet doctor. Nurse Andrea and didn't get other Nurses name, both great! They took the time to explain meds and shots they gave her. My baby had a bad reaction to annual vaccines and they made sure she felt better. Your fur babies deserve good medical care and this is the place to give you just that!

I'd give them 10 stars if I could! I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about Porter Veterinary Center under its new ownership! They have completely renovated the clinic, and the difference is incredible. Today, my cat was treated by Dr. Ryan and the amazing team--Julie, Michael, and Robert--for several health issues. From the moment we walked in, they made us feel welcome. Everyone was kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, and incredibly thorough. Most importantly, they focused on what my cat actually needed rather than trying to upsell unnecessary treatments. That level of honesty and genuine care is so refreshing. My cat, Sully, is already feeling much better, and I couldn't be more grateful for the exceptional care we received. If you're looking for a new veterinarian for your beloved pet, I highly recommend Porter Veterinary Center. There are many veterinary clinics throughout the Valley, and many aren't even accepting new patients. Porter Veterinary Center is welcoming new patients, and I wholeheartedly recommend them. If you want outstanding veterinary care from a doctor who truly cares about animals and a staff that is warm, friendly, and genuinely dedicated to helping both pets and their people, look no further. With its beautiful new facility, new ownership, and five-star service, Porter Veterinary Center has earned a lifelong client. Their phone number is listed. If your pet needs veterinary care, don't wait--give them a call today. Your furry family member will be in excellent hands!

Warm welcome from the Porter crew

After not being satisfied with the vet I was previously seeing, I decided to find another for my 2 year old Pomeranian that I got in a rehoming situation. I called around and spoke with the wonderful staff and they really were able to give me peace of mind about the care they provide. So I was able to bring my dog, Pepper, in the same day! Dr. Ryan was amazing. He answered all of my questions and didn't pressure me to get my dog spayed before she's ready. He listened to my concerns and was able to give some great tips and tricks. I'm so glad to have found a vet that I feel comfortable with and confident that they will be able to take good care of my little one. Thank you Dr. Ryan, Julia and Michael for all of your help! Pepper is feeling much better

I have a shitzu Maltese female who has had ear problems for her 4 years of her life, she would get a ton of build up and no matter how many times a week we would clean it out within 2 days it would go back to having so much buildup, flaky yellowish nasty stuff, took her to bunch of vets and no use but one day i brought her to porters and the doctor gave her some anti allergy shots and some specific ointment and cleaned her ears out from all the fungal bacteria and its been months that her ear is super clean and not inflamed, i am amazed at how one knowledgeable vet doctor could change a life of an animal. And on top of it she is no longer aggressive and doesn't bite when you touch her ear. My fur baby is finally calm and not stressed.

Dog Sitting by Ally - Looking for Travis and Ally! A usual morning occurrence!

Dog Sitting by Ally

West Hills

I guess it's time for another update because somehow every year I become even more grateful for…read moreAlly and Travis. Lately, I've seen so many heartbreaking stories about doggy daycares: dogs getting hurt, neglected, escaping, or simply not being treated with the love they deserve. Every time I read one, my first thought is the same: thank God Nova has Ally and Travis. Nova has been coming here since he was just 6 months old. He's now about to turn 5, which means they've been part of nearly his entire life. They've watched him grow from a timid, reactive puppy into the confident, happy dog he is today. They know his quirks, his routines, what makes him nervous, what makes him excited, and they have loved every version of him along the way. As dog owners, we all know there are very few people we'd trust with our entire heart. That's what our dogs are. They're not just pets, they're family. And somehow Ally and Travis have earned a level of trust that I didn't even know was possible. I've left Nova with them for the longest periods I've ever left him with anyone, and I've never once laid awake wondering if he was okay. There has never been a moment where I questioned whether he was safe, loved, exercised, or cared for. That kind of peace is priceless, and if you're a dog parent, you know exactly what I mean. What means the most to me is that Nova makes the choice himself every single time. The second he realizes where we're going, he's beside himself with excitement. If he doesn't get to see Ally or Travis, he cries. When he does, he runs to them without looking back. As someone whose dog was once fearful of people, seeing him love someone that deeply tells me everything I need to know. Dogs don't fake trust. They don't pretend to feel safe. They either do, or they don't. Nova has never questioned whether Ally and Travis are his people. Over the years, they've been there through my work schedule, my vacations, family emergencies, and every moment in between. They have given me something I can never truly repay: the ability to go through life knowing that the biggest piece of my heart is safe. That feeling is something every dog parent hopes to find, and so few actually do. Even if life takes me somewhere else one day, if I'm ever back in town and need someone to watch Nova, there is no question where he's going. I would drive hours just to leave him with Ally and Travis because trust like this isn't replaceable. They're not just our daycare: they're part of Nova's family. If you're scrolling through reviews wondering whether this is the right place for your dog, I hope this helps. Five years later, after hundreds of drop-offs and pickups, I can say with complete confidence that choosing Ally and Travis was one of the best decisions I've ever made for Nova. They have loved him like he was their own, and I will spend the rest of his life being grateful for that.

You can tell they truly care about the animals they watch and pay attention to each dog individually instead of treating them like "just another dog." My dogs are always happy, comfortable, loved, and excited when they see them, which honestly says more than anything I could write. She was testing out the place for a few days and we started off by leaving her 1-2 hours a day, she was nervous of course, as a dog should be going into a new place. The weekend crew were extremely kind to her when she barked and calmed her down. But come Monday, there was a new person in the den and instead of trying to calm an anxious dog, he squirt her with a bottle multiple times to get her to stop barking. Which if you know anything about dogs, you should never do that to an anxious pup. We really liked it up until today, so just beware. Thankfully we were able to watch it all on camera and picked her up the second we felt it was getting out of hand. A note for the owner - please try to find alternative ways to help a dog who is struggling to settle. Spraying them in the face and chest multiple times is an ineffective way to stop an unwanted behavior. This is extremely detrimental to their behavioral development and only causes more fear.
