I was so excited to discover that our airbnb was only 8 minutes from Portage Pie while we were visiting NY for the solar eclipse. I've been a fan of owner Connie's posts in a pie baking community on Facebook for many years, so it was serendipitous that I was so close to her shop without even knowing it. We arrived on Sunday morning right at 11 when they opened. I was worried the selection would be limited since we did not pre-order, but they had many extra fruit pies and cream pies for us to choose from. We got an apple crumb and a cherry pie. The crust is so crispy, and the fruit fillings taste fresh and just like homemade. Our cherry pie was still warm when we got it. The best pies I've ever had! Dessert is an important food group for me, and Chautauqua has no shortage of it. From Perry's ice cream to Amish baked goods, there is plenty to eat up. The pies I've had at various restaurants and farm stands have been good too, but none have compared to Portage Pie! Our family has been getting them for years and we look forward to picking them up each annual vacation. Over the years we've tried a variety of flavors: dutch apple, cherry, coconut, etc. My personal favorite, however, has always been chocolate. It was a wonderful flavor that other french silk or chocolate pudding pies lack. The crust is thin an flaky, never wet or mushy. And the whipped cream topping is a thick layer and homemade, definitely not from a can of Reddi Whip. I miss the smaller pies I remember buying, but knowing how fast our family inhales this delicious pie that would never suffice now. The shop has a delightful and bright exterior just a few storefronts down from the center of Westfield. I love visiting this picturesque town for the farmers market, architecture, and proximity to Lake Erie, so picking up pies is usually on our way. Due to their popularity you are best to order ahead of time, especially for the more popular flavors like chocolate. We've showed up last year and had to wait in a hot line outside due to the covid policy they had in place, but it was worth it. They also are pricier than most pies and went up again this past year, perhaps due to inflation or supply chain issues like many other businesses suffered from. Considering the quality and it being an annual splurge on our summer vacation, we find it worth it! I think everything has already been said about Portage Pie. Yes, their pies are delicious and one of the kind. Yes, you have to call and order what you want in advance because they are simply sold out around noon on weekends. That's what happened to us, unfortunately. We learned, during the summer time, it's wise to call even three days before, on Wednesday, if you need your wonderful treat to pick up on Saturday. This is just a bakery place -- order, buy, go and see you sooner or later again. It's all about how far you live from Westfield NY, because you are going to be back for sure if you are a pie lover. Now, if you don't want the whole thing, I mean a full 9 inch pie, or you missed the opportunity to buy one, you can go to two places in town, where Portage Pie slices are available -- Brazilli's on Main and Westfield Main Diner. Those two places are totally different, so the choice of where you would go depends on whether they have the kind of pie you want, price, vibe, occasion and all of the above. Brazilli's charge for a piece of pie is $6. Diner is cheaper, not even $4 per piece of goodness, but we don't know the size of the pieces they offer. So next time, we'll check and let you know. About the actual pies, I can only speak for my friend, who is real pie follower around the nation and she truly knows a lot about the subject of great pies. The Portage Pie place makes them with love straight from the heart. Making this long story shorter, we jumped into the first place we saw on our way, which was Brazilli's, and ordered three kind of pies: coconut, peach and raspberry. All of them were delicious. The crust had the perfect flake and the apples were still solid and not too stiff or soggy. I went with the apple crumble instead of a double crust and it was definitely a hit! They are open year round but summer time is their busy season, so call ahead to order what you want because there's no guarantee you'll get what you need just walking in. The cream pies don't seem to be available on a walk-in basis, so call ahead to order banana, chocolate, coconut, key lime, peanut butter, pecan & pumpkin! The young man at the counter was so nice & witty, and his mom apparently is the braun and brains driving the kitchen in this establishment. She poked her head out and waved hello too! Some say the old Portage Pie building is haunted. That when you walk in, you can still feel the presence of the bakers. Some even claim that they've smelled pies in the ovens, as if people were still baking here in this long abandoned building. I'm kidding, of course. Although it looks like an abandoned building, the streetside sign saying "OPEN / PIES" indicates otherwise. Portage Pie is open for business! We were here the day before Easter, and it was standing room only. If you hadn't ordered ahead, you were out of luck. You could either wait a few hours for a new pie, or if people didn't pick up their orders, you could buy one of those. No commercial ovens here. In the kitchen, I peeped a row of residential ranges, the same you have in your own kitchen, baking away. I wasn't sure what to expect from these pies. Luckily, grandma had ordered ahead for us, and we walked out with raspberry and key lime pies. Well, damned if these aren't the best pies I've ever had. The raspberries tasted fresh, and the crust was flaky and perfectly cooked (no soggy bottom). Key lime pie can very hit-or-miss, but this one was, pardon the expression, on fleek. The custard was strongly limed-out, and the graham cracker crust held up perfectly. You can't get more local than Portage Pie. I know people come here from all the surrounding towns, and I love the idea that they have probably influenced the whole area's dessert expectations. Family gathering? There'd better be a pie there. The hype is real! So real. Like a scene out of Seinfeld and the Soup Nazi, I walked in at 3 PM on a Friday afternoon and the young lady asked me if I had an order in. I did not know I had to. I thought maybe this was like every other bakery I have ever been to and there would be a display case of pies that you could order a slice or a whole deal. Not the case. I reluctantly said, "no I did not," although my gut said to throw out, "Yes, that would be under Mr. Smith," and hope for the best. She opened the fridge and BOOM, that pie had my name on it...literally. I drove home, which took me two hours and put it in the fridge for a late night snack. 10 PM rolled around and my wife and I indulged on a piece. Now, I need a moment of silence right now...... ...okay, Shut The Front Door...this pie was THE single best I have ever had. No Joke. It was not insanely rich, but somehow packed a mouthwatering punch. The whipped cream was smooth and fluffy and the PB and chocolate layered better than an Oreo. I swear I may have heard "My Precious" from my daughter when she finished her first bite. hate to be a dissenter about the quality of Portage Pies. This weekend I purchased a raspberry-rhubarb pie and a pecan one. The first has no discernable rhubarb flavor, but lots of thickening; so much so that I could taste it. But the crust was ever so flaky and fantastic. The pecan pie tasted more of corn syrup than pecans. In fact, the pie was way short of pecans even the skimpiest pecan pie. The filling was so sweet that my jaws ached. But the crust was ever so flaky and fantastic. This place was funky and cute. The person who sold the pie was endearing. However, for $38, I felt ripped off in a major way. When I pay that much, I expect quality filling, not just quality crust. OK, so let's start with the fact that I'm not really a pie person, but, my Father is a very discerning pie person So, on the way to Jamestown for the comedy festival (great time, there!), we stopped in Westfield for the renowned Portage Pies. We arrived at noon on a Saturday. I got the last blackberry and the last strawberry rhubarb. I wanted coconut cream but they were long gone (as was everything else except peach-blueberry)! The pies had to survive in the car until Sunday night/Monday when we got back home. I sampled the blackberry !! Absolutely deeeeeelish! But the real test came on Monday when I presented the strawberry rhubarb pie to my Father. I was excited and nervous because I loved it so much but knew he is very picky. I am happy to report that he was extremely happy with it. We both loved the crust and there was hardly any thickener in our pies.
