I visited Portabello's in Bluefield, WV on Saturday evening, September 12, 2026. This place has improved 100% from what it was. This evening a man was at the counter arguing that he had placed an order and paid but the waitress kindly stated that she could find no record of his purchase. He could produce no receipt or phone proof that he had ordered. He stormed out and said he was going to leave a bad Yelp review. I wanted to counter his bad review with a good one. read more

Recently went to check out this restaurant and from the start felt duped by AI. Since the website provided an option to reserve a table and the pictures led me to think it was somewhat like a fine dining restaurant, I was surprised to find a pizzeria with wait staff. We decided to try it anyway maybe the food was really good. Here is what we found. The good - Cannoli was delicious, pizzas were well made and tasted good. The bad - The chairs were sunken in the middle so it felt like you were sitting on the wood of the edges (uncomfortable), many of the calzones listed on the menu are actually strombolis and were merely okay, the pasta dishes tasted like Chef Boyardee boxed or canned heated in a microwave, tea was more like brown water, there is an unmarked step into the bathroom which came close to creating a bad fall, the wait staff was disorganized and bordered on unprofessional (drinks and food came out one or two at a time, some of us were done eating before the others even got their food and the food was not worth the wait), the menu was expansive but not in a good way (too much stuff and none done well), and everything was overpriced. All in, the bill was close to $200 and I could have ordered and enjoyed the same food from a local pizza chain for least than half the price and it would have been tastier. read more

I was looking forward to dining here as it's reopening was hyped on local channels. 1st..no alcohol 2nd ordered fried green tomatoes appetizer they arrived without sharing plates or dressing to dip the (the fried green tomatoes were delicious) Wife ordered a pasta dish that came with a side salad that never came till we asked when the check was brought. The chicken Parmasain with spaghetti was very good but should come with a salad like the lesser pasta dishes. Portabella's is a small restaurant in downtown Bluefield. It has cute decor. There is a step down from the parking lot into the restaurant that is not marked that is fairly dangerous. Once inside, the restaurant is small, but quaint. The menu offers pasta dishes, pizza, stromatolites calzones salads and appetizers. Being a person with many food allergies/sensitivities, I did not have many options on the menu. They did have a gluten free pizza, which I ordered with no cheese. It came with no sauce either! I had trouble getting a wait staff 's attention to ask for sauce, so someone in our party who had ordered a calzone gave me her's. The forgot to make the food for one member of our group, do it came out much later. (They comped us 10% off our bill for that, but he sat there for about 15 minutes with nothing to eat while the rest of us ate.) It was extremely hot in the restaurant. I'm not sure if the AC was broken, but it definitely wasn't on, and with all the pizzas, stromatolites and calzones cooking, it was toasty in there. The wait staff was not attentive to out drinks either. We got one refill, and then after our drinks went dry, they were nowhere to be found. I had to come back and state for the record that upon my second visit this restaurant truly reads their reviews and does their best to correct their mistakes and does their best to please everyone because the pizzas that I got from there this last time were perfect. Stopped to eat at this restaurant on our way home from Florida. The Service was excellent. The waitress was more that accommodating, gave us a tour of the restaurant and explained the history of their building. The food we ordered was delicious and + ordered calzone and stromboli to take with us. They were amazing. Will make it a point to stop back there again if we ever get anywhere near it. Previously, I rated this place 4 stars with my only complaints the unprofessional wait staff and sort of bland appearance of the place, but they've really stepped it up on the former! Have had consistently great service the past dozen or so times going here (could still use a mural or something to spice up its looks, though. Hahah). The food is still delicious, with the calzone/Stromboli being my favorite, and the cheese-filled garlic knots the real star of the menu. They added an upstairs, but don't even think about going up there unless you're renting it for the night, because I've seen people get yelled at for this, despite no sign posted saying "upstairs is closed". So yeah, it may be nice up there, who knows. Parking is a little bit of an issue sometimes if it's really busy, but you can always park in one of the giant lots not far away and walk over. All in all, downtown Bluefield is phenomenally lucky to have this place. Even with its room for improvement, it's still head and shoulders above all the other Bluefield, WV restaurants. read more

Visited while in town to see family. The lasagna was good but heavy. I love the location and the decor was simple but lovely. My five year old had the kids spaghetti. I think they should've used penne instead. And they didn't have milk. So it was a bit disappointing for her, even though she is not a picky eater. The waitress was adequate but could've been a bit more friendly. Overall, I had a good experience. Downtown is much better off with this place. Hopefully other businesses follow suit and rebuild downtown. read more

If you want great Portabella food and service, go to Portabella II a few miles down the road at Mercer Mall. This location has been tagged with health code violations and concerns in the past. Several of the waiters are not friendly, and the food is not consistent. The tables are sticky and the service is slow. I don't recommend this location, but I do recommend Portabella II at Mercer Mall. read more

Don't do it. Even if you are starving and you think nothing else is open, go somewhere else. We first enter to a girl vacuuming. They weren't closing in the near future. Could have easily overlooked that. We sat down and ordered our drinks and meals. My friend did a create your own stromboli with just broccoli and a few other veggies. Our meals came out and her stromboli had pepperoni in it. When we called the waitress over to see about getting it fixed, she proceeded to act like it was not their fault - apparently all of their create your owns come with pepperoni - even when you say you only want XY&Z. She took the plate to the ladies who I assume manage the place who were sitting in two booths away and had major attitude about it explaining the issue. Basically within our earshot was complaining about us. The lady came over, asks specifically what she wanted in the stromboli. She stated mozzarella cheese - not ricotta - broccoli and the other veggies she originally mentioned. The lady confirmed no ricotta? That's right, but mozzarella. She said I know that. Three of us proceed to eat because at this point my friend lost her appetite. When we were finished, her remade meal finally came out (this is the third one now because they let the second one burn without letting us know the status of why we were waiting so long). We immediately put it in a box to get out of there. More vacuuming while we ate. R. Kelly on the radio. No refills since we first mentioned the meal was wrong by the way. I asked the waitress if we could get our checks, she rudely pointed up front and she said you pay up there - like we were supposed to know, how dumb of us. We go to pay and the manager blatantly asked will you be leaving your waitress a tip? We did, begrudgingly. Get home and what do you know... There is ricotta in the stromboli. Amazing side salads. Very fresh lettuce, green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, pepperoncini, and mozzarella cheese. Tammy had a huge philly cheese steak .... Foot long for 7.99! Was in town on work and wanted some Italian food. Place didn't look like much from the outside but once i entered it was a spacious older establishment. Place wasn't busy inside but man the takeout orders they had were non-stop. So this place definately has lots of business. The waitress was really nice. I got the lasagna came with a salad and garlic toast to go. Man it was really good. And the portion size to go was rather large. It made 3 meals for me. Price was decent and really hit the spot. I'm sure this place is A-OK for the average clientele in this rural area, but this city girl found it very, very meh. This would be a one-star if it were in a city with better options. Kitchen service was slooooow. The décor was fine, nothing special. Our server (Adam, I think?) did fine at his job and was pretty entertainingly snarky. The food prices are ridiculously cheap, but you get what you pay for. My party of three tried the cheesy garlic knots, fried mushrooms, calzone, and burger. The cheesy garlic knots were the best part of the meal, gooey and flavorful, though the dough was just a hair undercooked. The fried mushrooms tasted good but were definitely gooey/underdone inside. My boyfriend's dad's calzone looked nice, but he said it was underdone and that the veggies inside were still too crunchy. In a startling departure from the "undercooked" theme, my boyfriend's and my burgers were very, very overdone. I had requested mine medium-rare and the server basically laughed and said he'd see what he could do. Really? Both burgers also arrived with zero condiments, though the menu said they would have mayo. The accompanying fries were nothing to write home about, either, and no pickle?! In sum: I'd eat here again if it was my only choice, which it pretty much was on a Sunday in this tiny town. read more

Excellent. On my first stay in Bluefield, I choose Portabella for a "birthday date" with my wife. Atmosphere was nice. Noise level was appropriate. Wait staff were professional. Lasagna was wonderful. Pricing is moderate. I am told that their large cheese pizza at (8.75) as opposed to 13 at Crazy Tomato and 15 at Bellacino's is EXCEPTIONAL. Based on the quality and the taste of the food (and the service) if I could choose one place to go in Bluefield, WV, it would be here. read more

We went in last night for a family members birthday; there were about 12 people in our party. While parking the car we watched a rat scurring around behind the restaurant (eeeewwww)! The inside was quiet and the decor was nice. The wait staff was very nice but the kitchen needs to work on timing a little more. Everyone that ordered pizzas or calzones received their meal a good 15 minutes before those of us with pasta dishes. I ordered 'fettuccine carbonara' with chicken, which was drowning in sauce, and not great. Then menu specifically stated that prosciutto would be in the dish, but it was no more than sliced deli ham. It was a fettuccine sauce, no carbonara in sight, and the chicken was boiled before being finished on the grill to add a little favor, which it did not. My husband ordered tiramisu for dessert, which came in a plastic cup with the lid still on. He ate a few bites before relizing it was rancid and tasted of rotten milk; the expiration date on it was 8-18. We were not charged for this and were given 10% off our entire ticket, which was great. However, after everyone had paid, there were 5 'unpaid' drinks (coke, tea, etc) left on the entire ticket of 12 people. The employees held up the line and would not let other customers pay before these drinks were paid for, it became such an ordeal, that my uncle decided just to pay for them so we would be allowed to leave. In the parking lot, we wondered if the drinks were from the messed up order the waitress brought us. I understand that the unaccounted for drinks are lost revenue but to create such a to-do about them and hold up the line for everyone in the entire restaurant was uncalled for. The garlic knots were the best part of the meal, although they were a little undercooked. We will not be returning. read more

Stopped here for lunch on Monday afternoon. Service was friendly. Waitress was very intuitive. Seems like everytime I needed something (drink refills etc.), she would already be coming with it in her hand. All the food we ordered was delivered to the table in a timely manner. The Fettucini Alfredo that I ordered was delicious! My daughter ordered a small Steak and Cheese Calzone. It was also very tasty. Glad we found this place today. We will return. read more
