This is the nicest used bookstore I've ever visited. It's charming, clean and very well organized…read more Happens to specialize in all the topics that interest me - art, photography, poetry, fiction. Lovely owner. Couldn't be better. If you love used books, be sure to visit here!

Ok. So why the 5 stars for a bookstore? Because it simply ROCKS, that's why!…read more Here's what happened: Was across the street at Shelter Island Craft Beer Company sampling their wares (see separate review ;)) Noticed a book store across the street. WHA...? How could an independent bookstore survive on insular Shelter Island when a shit ton of other indies, and even mega-book depots like Borders, have been shuttering? We just had to check it out. Plus, we saw some woman with a Boston Terrier the same type of breed we own) either enter the store or perhaps the adjoining house so that sealed the deal for us. I wasn't expecting much: I thought it would be piles and piles of books culled from flea markets and yard sales. Far from it. Though the selections are limited, it is a well-curated store. I, for one, was in awe of the small shelf dedicated to chess books. There were several first editions, one dating back to 1866! And, of course, clocking in at $400, was something that was a joy just to hold! Several other shelves held rare and 1st edition children's books. Stuff you maybe don't want your toddler fondling but maybe something to gift to the Grands to read from over the holidays. In the front was a glass case with books from Alllistair Crowler. A tad creepy for me but hey! It IS Black Cat Books after all. They had some comics and actual pulps in protective covers. We did not go upstairs (I don't know why. It's not like we were in a rush or anything) but it seemed they had CDs and actual vinyl to boot! The whole place was light and relaxing. Comfortably cooled on this warm, late summer day, there were multiple seating options that invited you to take a load off and maybe peruse your selection before purchasing. In small, work areas behind the stakcs and near some of the shelves were many other books labelled for placement. many looked VERY old. I was dying to get my mitts on them just to see what they were. But that would be rude. I mean, it's not like I'm going to find an original King James in here, (Or will I?) Where do they GET this stuff? What WAS missing (unless it escaped me) were periodicals. No newspapers or mags which was actually refreshing. The place was FOCUSED. This is where you come to find good, rare books. This place is out-of-the-way for the rest of us Long Islanders. It takes me a good hour to get to Greenport proper and then a $20 roundtrip ferry ride to Shelter island (car, driver, passenger). But I have to say, it's damned worth it, especially if you are into books. Take a ride out there early. Find that gem (or three). Carefully wrap them in a blanket and secure them under the seat of your car. Hit multiple wineries and a craft beer joint on the way home. Gloat over your score. It makes for a great, great day! Cheers!

Don't try to shift the blame to me. I was never delinquent picking up my pull list other then when…read moreI decided to stop patronizing your store. "Constantly asked for exceptions to store policies" is a load of crap and you know it. Don't lie, Dan. I was never anything but a loyal customer. If you want to air out grievances here on this public forum, I can gladly do so. Why don't you talk about how miserable you are and how it reflects in your customer service? A few other reviewers seem to have the same thoughts about that. When someone walks in the door it's a toss up if you'll get Harvey or Two-Face. Most of the time it's the latter. Or should we discuss how you put RFK Jr. campaign flyers in your customers' bags and then badger them about his policies? Or how a simple question about moving turns into a political debate with you? How about how you allow a gaggle of idiots to stand around your store cursing while children are present as you laugh along? And the only reason you stopped was because your wife said something to you? Would you like me to continue?

I must have driven by Dan's shop a million times until I finally stopped by back in March. I hadn't…read morecollected comic books since I was a kid and I never had enough money to be that serious about it all those years ago. So when this middle-aged dad finally ended up in the store I wasn't sure what to expect from Boom Tube Comics. I knew bits and pieces from a lot of pop culture and just my own casual interest over the years, but still, I thought trying to get back into comic books would be confusing and intimidating. I'm happy to say that it turned out to be exactly the opposite. Dan has created the kind of comic shop in Boom Tube Comics that I think every fan or collector hopes to find. From my very first visit, he made me feel welcome, never talked down to me, and was incredibly patient in explaining how comics and his store works. He's a wealth of information too, from subscriptions and FOC dates, to special series, blind bags, conventions, etc. No matter what your level of knowledge is, he meets you where you are and seems to genuinely enjoy helping people learn more about the hobby. Dan's always happy to talk about local artists, comic book history, recommend an interesting/popular book, point out books you might otherwise overlook, and even suggest trustworthy online resources if you want to learn more about collecting or comic history. You never feel rushed, pressured, or like you're asking a "dumb" question. The man has patience for miles! On top of that, Dan has a terrific sense of humor that makes every visit enjoyable. It's the kind of place where you stop in for a few books and end up spending extra time just talking comics or cracking jokes and getting sucked into whatever is piquing your interest that week. His prices are fair for key issues and incentive covers, his customer service is exceptional (Shout out to his wife Karen, appreciate all you do too!). If you're hunting for an older issue, he's happy to check his back catalog to see if he has it. Subscribers are treated like royalty, he bags and boards books, slaps a discount on for you, and goes out of his way to make sure subscribers receive the best copies. He has a lot of gratitude for his regular customers/subscribers and it really shows that he wants them to have a premium, yet still classic, comic shop experience. The shop also has an excellent selection of toys, collectibles, and nostalgic items that make browsing as much fun as shopping. This a great TOY STORE TOO! I wasn't sure about diving back into comics in some ways, but Dan made it super easy and fun. If you're a longtime collector, someone returning to the hobby like me, a complete beginner, it doesn't matter. I truly can't recommend Boom Tube Comics highly enough. It's a fantastic local shop run by someone who truly loves comics and genuinely cares about the people who walk through the door. Support our local businesses! I should've stopped at Dan's shop the very first time I drove past it, DON'T make the same mistake I did.
