The chips and salsa were delicious as was the homemade hot salsa. Hands down, the best homemade hot salsa that I've ever had. It was both spicy and flavorful. The atmosphere of this restaurant was relaxed. For dinner my daughter ordered the Mega Burrito, my son ordered the chicken fingers with fries, my husband ordered the Fajitas Combination, and I ordered the Nachos Pompeyos. Very nice Mexican restaurant on the lake Huron shoreline in Alpena. For our first meal at this establishment we had the Fajita Taco Salad off the lunch specialty menu ($10.99) and the Al Pastor combo plate ($14.75) off of the main menu. The Fajita salad was quite tasty with the beef strips and grilled pepper/onions adding a nice twist to the traditional straight up beef taco salad that you get in most other Mexican restaurants. The Al Pastor combo, marinated pork strip with grilled onions and pineapples, was equally well made and tasty. Portion size was very generous , especially on the Al Pastor combo plate. Aside from the Entree's, the chips and salsa which are gratis with the meal, were excellent and a perfect complement to my house Margarita which was oh so good and went down very nicely while nibbling on the chips Relative to the restaurant itself, it is clean and bright with a lot of windows facing the lake offering expansive open views of Lake Huron. Nice! Another key attribute of this restaurant is that it also has outdoor patio dining that again offer up those amazing Lake Huron views with the added ambiance of eating outside and hearing the waves lapping as the back stop to your meal. This truly takes outdoor dining to another level and is something most restaurants can not match in this state, Very very nice! Lastly, this is a family run business with super friendly staff that adds to the overall positive dining experience we had here. Overall we were very pleased with our initial dining experience at Pompeyo's. Good food, large portions, friendly staff and those absolutely amazing views. Visiting from out of state and one night we decided to order carryout and the chicken chimi and steak fajitas were bland, and I never thought it was possible to do a bad job with fried ice cream but they did it. Fried ice cream is a ball of vanilla ice cream, dipped in egg and rolled either in Corn Flakes, fried and served with honey or chocolate. Their "take" is ice cream, sprinkles in a fried tortilla shell. I surely this isn't the best Alpena has to offer because this was the absolute worst experience we ever had. read more

We had a really good experience here. We were staying in the beach motel next door for two nights and walked over for dinner on the first night. The margaritas are fantastic, the food was great, and our server, Danni, was amazing! She was bright, sunny, and funny, and at the same time efficient and quick. A little later in the evening I popped back in to see if the restaurant could give me a pack of matches and Juan, an employee, just handed me his own lighter. What a kind gesture! We returned the next night just for another margarita or two and Danni grabbed us up to serve us. We probably won't be in the area again but we sure recommend that you stop here for a meal. Made a call to this restaurant on a rainy day last Friday and asked if we could bring a 6 pound puppy in a covered crate in a stroller onto the patio. There is a little cul-de-sac area that was covered and they said yes we could put her there -when we got there, they said no you could put her on the grass!! For Pete sakes, it was raining and she's a pup. No one was on the patio. It was freezing cold, and then another waitress came out and "look they just called I told them it would be OK because nobody's out here!"They started an argument and the other waitress refused to let us stay. You couldn't even see our dog we promptly left. Now the less than desirable portion ...Hostess "Kitaira" was rude when I arrived at host stand following sign to wait to be seated. Asked what my to go order was. I responded I was hoping to dine in. Was the patio available. Shot down and not nicely. Zero customer service. She proceeded to seat me at a dirty table. I inquired, letting her know I thought it was dirty. Only to be informed it was in fact clean. I went ahead and sat down but I wiped up the bits and pieces on the table and when my server came I requested a clean table. For the rest of the night I got dirty looks from the hostess. Clean table amid Covid apparently makes you a target. The wait time was over the top. I truly believe they should've managed expectations, that they had seated a really large group therefore the kitchen was swamped. My food took over half an hour. I ate all my chips and salsa and my entire drink (which I miles slowly) and still waited 10+ minutes for my food. I upgraded one item on sampled from chicken to steak. Server said it would be $2-2.5. They charged me $5. Not impressed. Rose my server was nice enough but was likely new. Very meal, didn't know menu well when I asked for recommendations. First of all let's get one thing straight: I am not from Alpena. In fact I have no clue why im here, but I am. I visited Pompeyos expecting the average Mexican food experience, but left with a sour taste in my mouth due to the service. I don't know if it was a low staffed night or if the staff was busy but every thing seemed to take 15 more minutes then most other restaurants. Time to seat us: 15 minutes, time to take our drink orders: 15 minutes, time to get drinks out: 15 minutes. We weren't ordering anything special, just a couple of cokes about some water. Food took 45 minutes to come out. After receiving the check it took yet another 20 minutes to take the check back. Overall im unimpressed with the quality of service. Food is better than average. But oh my goodness, it was WONDERFUL! The guacamole was over the top! The salsa was truly great as well.
