My sister-in-law's family sometimes invites us to join them for a Christmas or Easter celebration at Polonia banquets. The banquet hall and tables are always decorated for the appropriate holiday. Sometimes there is a mass before the banquet. There is always a polka band and dancing after the meal! And there is lots and lots of food served family style!
Polonia is the Polish grandmother I never had. I don't know what a homemade pierogi is supposed to taste like, but all Polonia pierogis are delicate and delicious. I could rhapsodize about their Polish sausages endlessly. They are tender, juicy, and flavorful. I've tasted none better. I even like the pickled herring! The chicken can be bland, but it's passable. The kraut is better than you'll get from the grocery store, but nothing to write home about. At Christmas, each table receives a bottle of very sweet, cherry, Polish wine. It's high octane stuff to be sipped not slurped. Easy there!
My one quibble is the servers are in too much of a hurry to clear the food. You might well be tempted to slap or jab a fork into an overeager hand! If you get up from the table, have someone guard your plate and the serving platter of sausages!
Never danced the polka? You should give it a try. It's not difficult to learn and it's a lot of fun. I'm sure one of the regulars would be glad to show you how. Get up and dance! read more
