We vacationed in Traverse City and Petoskey a couple of weeks ago primarily to once again see the color season. Amongst our highlites during this fun trip was a couple of meals at the Polish Kitchen on M119 just outside of Petoskey. (The other location in town was closed for a few days so we didn't get to try it). We tried several different items each time. and while everything was very good, our favorites were the golumki, pierogi, and kielbasa. We each ordered the daily special for $8 per plate - which gives you a choice of 2 items off a list of several tasty dishes, plus self-serve pops. Each food item was prepared very well, served promptly and warm, along with the traditional basket of seedless rye bread and real butter - yum! The owners were very friendly and rightfully proud of the food they prepared. As a pretty serious foodie, and one who appreciates well-prepared authentic cuisine, I highly recommend this place for really good food at a good price. This was a pleasant stop at the end of our vacation. The gentleman serving us was delightful, witty and knowledgeable about the menu and foods. The owners are from Poland as of 1996 according to the information inside the restaurant. My husband ordered the polish platter and I ordered the Kings feast sampler. Both consisted of kielbasa, sauerkraut, 4 pierogis, and golabka (stuffed cabbage). The pierogis came with the option of being potato, pork, cheese sauerkraut, my husband and I asked for 1 each. We liked them all but probably cheese being the favorite. The golabka was cabbage stuffed with pork and rice, it came with the option of tomato sauce or mushroom sauce. I got tomato and my husband got mushroom. We liked them both but I preferred the tomato. The Kings feast came with Kings stew that had sauerkraut and various meats. While this was good, it got to be a little overwhelming as a meal with all the sausage and sauerkraut. You may want to order separately. My husband tried the beet borscht, it was delicious, served warm. I ordered potato dumplings which were very similar to gnocchi. We both loved the flavor of the kielbasa mixed with the hot mustard that was offered with it. I asked "what is the difference between German mustard and polish mustard?" The man laughed and said, "this one is made in Canada." Little known fact for all you, yelpers, Poland is 3rd in the world for Apple producers (don't believe me, stop right here and google it), so being in Michigan which is Apple country and eating at a polish restaurant, getting the apple cake to go was a must! I asked where the apples came from and they got them locally at the farmers' market. The cake was very flavorful, but in my limited mind, a cross between pie and coffee cake. Definitely worth it! The curb appeal outside is a bit sterile but inside is decorated very interestingly. I recommend this as must stop if you're in the area! read more

You order your food at the counter, find a table and they deliver your food to your table hot and tasty. Outside of a limited menu the place is GREAT. We will be back. On a recent vacation we stopped in for lunch. Ordered the schnitzel dinner and the pierogies sampler. Yum! The food was authentic and delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful. (We sat outside because we were traveling with our dog and they even brought her out a bowl of water ) Wish we lived nearby, we would definitely be regulars here. My husband and I were vacationing in Bay Harbor and found this restaurant online and since we're both 100% Polish, we knew we had to give it a shot. We've traveled to Poland many times, have studied in Poland, and our family members live in Poland so we know authentic Polish food well and THIS IS IT. We ordered many different dishes to try and each of them tasted EXACTLY like our homemade Polish food or any food you find at an authentic restaurant in Poland. What a gem. If we didn't live so far away, we would visit often! Upon walking in the door we were greeted by the friendly polish immigrant owner. We ordered the pierogi sampler and the polish sampler to share. There were 4 kinds of pierogis on the platter: pork, sauerkraut, potato-cheddar, and potato-farmers cheese. All were delicious, but the potato and cheddar pierogis were especially good. We bought a dozen of those frozen to go. The sampler platter had stuffed cabbage, polish sausage, and more pierogis! Everything was great. Our family loves this place. Everyone is so nice and extremely helpful. The potato pierogi are flavorful and satisfying. My 3 year old niece thought they were too peppery, but everyone else polished off about 10 each. The sides we've tried are great. The grated beets are mixed with horseradish and have a nice bite. The applesauce is chunky and goes perfectly with the pierogi. They even helped us figure out a good way to take pierogis for 10 on a hike, packed them up, and gave us directions for reheating in the morning. We have also picked up from here when no one wanted to leave Petoskey Beach at lunch time. Everyone who works there has been friendly and helpful. read more

Every time we're in the area we make a pilgrimmage to Polish Kitchen. It is quite simply the most delicious, home cooked Polish food in the area. I recommend the Polish sampler to get a flavor of everything, but if I had to pick a favorite dish it would have to be the stuffed cabbage. I like most it, but for me, a disciplined seeker of value, there is no better quick serve lunch between Harbor and Petoskey than the Polish Kitchen off menu special of a half sandwich and cup of soup for 5.99. I get the Club and a cup of bean soup. The Club is excellent. The bean soup is more like a light chili made with a little ground sausage. It's very tasty and mildly hearty. Gave this place a try for the first time today and was stunned at the quality of the cuisine. I ordered the King's Feast Sampler Platter, which included a smoked kielbasa, sauerkraut, six Pierogi, a Golabki (stuffed cabbage), Bigos (Hunter's Stew), and light rye bread. Every entree was perfectly prepared, and simply bursting with flavor! Somehow delicate yet bold at the same time, the Pierogi--of which I opted to try all four varieties--and light rye bread were a fine counterpoint to the zesty Kiebasa, sauerkraut, and Bigos. Tying it all together nicely were the more nuanced tastes of the Golabki, which I elected to have served with a tomato sauce. Truly impressed with this meal, I ordered a dozen more assorted Pierogi to go, along with two more Golabki--this time with mushroom sauce--with dumplings and light rye bread on the side. The Golabski with the mushroom sauce were particularly delicious standouts. Service is very fast, and the dining room offers sparkling clean, casual, and relaxing surroundings. Sensible pricing makes The Polish Kitchen among the most outstanding dining values that you will find anywhere. Having grown up with this type of cuisine served by friends and extended family, I can tell you that this is as real as it gets.
