Shimizu Kitchen - Complimentary sherbert

Shimizu Kitchen

Would return any time. It's not the best Japanese food I've ever had, but it's still very good…read moreJapanese food! The tantanmen was a standout thanks to the great balance of spice and flavor. A complimentary scoop of sherbet was even served afterwards to cut the spice. The katsu orders looked huge and savory. Sit at the bar to watch the kitchen cook, if possible. Prices are more than reasonable for what you receive. Parking can be tricky but you'll find free street parking behind the shopping strip

We were looking for a ramen place to eat at on the way home from picking up the kids from summer…read morecamp. Didn't feel like cooking... lol. I looked for Ramen places on google and came across this restaurant. They have been around for a few years but I had never noticed them before. When we went in we were greeted and told that we could sit anywhere. My son wanted to sit at the sushi bar side but we elected to sit at a table. The restaurant is not very big with seating for maybe 20. Menus were already on the table. Not an extensive menu. A selection of ramen, Rice dishes, sides, and beverages. We ordered 2 Tonkotsu Ramen with extra noodles and a Tonkatsu (Pork cutlets with rice). We also had a side order of salmon sashimi. Everyone had waters and I ordered a tea. The ramen was really good. Broth not too salty. Not as layered flavour that we have tasted from other places but still very good. Noodles are the curly ones and picked up the flavour of the broth nicely. The Tonkatsu was good. A little dry - had to use the sauce extensively. The salmon sashimi appy was good. It came with a home made wasabi dressing/sauce. To end the meal they gave us complimentary ice cream. Nice touch. Staff were really friendly and appreciative that we came by. My son needed to use the washroom a couple of times and it was clean. Will definitely come back again for the ramen. Family enjoyed our meal.

Monsoon Izakaya - oshi sushi

Monsoon Izakaya

loved the decor, the interior blends bold, traditional japanese elements with a slightly modern,…read moreizakaya style flair. the space features dark brick walls and wooden beams, giving it a cozy, intimate feel, while a striking lantern style light fixture overhead adds a warm glow. i could not help but think what a great place to gather with a group, enjoy drinks, and share a bunch of dishes. the menu was a bit overwhelming (in a good way). so many options, truth be told, i was over stimulated but we eventually narrowed it down to two oshis and the beef tataki, to start. unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to the setting. we were pretty disappointed that the oshis weren't flame seared, part of what makes oshi sushi so craveable is that warm, caramelized top. both rolls we ordered tasted pretty much the same, despite having different toppings. the monsoon special (tuna, salmon, avocado, dried onion, creamy yum sauce, unagi sauce, sesame seeds) and the salmon oshi (spicy mayo, cucumber, jalapeño, sesame seeds, dried onion) looked different, but flavour wise, were indistinguishable. also, the seaweed wrap situation was strange, it seemed like it was wrapped like a sushi and then the bottom half was sliced off, giving it an unfinished feel. they were not layered in a rectangular mold, and was missing the lightly flame seared smoky caramelized taste. then there was the beef tataki, the crunchy bits we were biting into turned out to be garlic flakes, but the texture was oddly sharp, i thought i had bit into shards of oyster shells. the sauce threw us off too, the balance of citrus and sweet was off, with a weird spicy kick, like frank's hot sauce that didn't quite work. we did not finish this. we had planned to order some drinks and deep fried dishes, but decided against this. service was friendly and the ambiance was great, but the food execution just didn't match up. not sure we'd return.

Amazing ambiance with great service. Sushi was amazingly fresh and very good. From the sashimi to…read morethe sirloin steak, everything was flavorful and left you wanting more. The fish cheek was lightly fried with plenty of meat. You can also order a flying fish sashimi that it was presented beautifully. After finishing the sashimi, they will ask if you would like the remainder of the fish fried. We opted to do this and everything down to the bone was edible and crunchy, like fish chips. I love how none of the fish was wasted and the entire fish was edible. Overall, highly recommend this place if you are looking for fresh fish and quite authentic flavors. Be prepared to leave smelling a bit smokey though due to the open kitchen. But it's great that you can watch them prepare some of the food.
