Very unique food and experience! Came here for my birthday. Here is my in depth review:…read more Food: Well flavored, different, and not something you would find at another restaurant. Starting with the choka, it was very acidic and tasted like a vegetarian ceviche. Very tasty with the plantain chips! The west indian curry was also super flavorful and tasted like a japanese katsu curry. Also ordered the peppercot boar, and these meat pieces were so tender they literally melted in my mouth. I do wish there was some more variety in the boar dish(like some veggies) and towards the end I wss getting a little tired of the flavor. It was intense and tasted like molasses. Roti was flaky and tasty and the maduro ice cream was yummy as well Ambience: Little on the dark side and it gets anlittle darker as the night goes on, but still romantic. Service: Good, but a little slow but understandable because we went they were crazy busy. Definitely will be back to try other dishes on the menu!

I went alone to dinner here one night while I was in Austin for a work conference, and boy am I glad I did! I was sat at the bar and the bartenders were so personable, I even became quick friends with the guest seated next to me and was invited out by him to listen to a live band later in the evening. For the food: nothing was bad, I had the avocado salad thing-it was very tart but refreshing, the cabbage, the jerk chicken, the roti, the tree leches cake , the spicy cocktail and the banana cocktails were beautifully prepared, delicious, fresh /!: appetizing. No notes!

Cold. I bit it a second time because I genuinely couldn't believe it. Meanwhile, the rice was so hot it was still visibly steaming from what I can only assume was a microwave, drowned in a watery gravy I never asked for, next to the old cabbage with solidified liquid. I brought the plate back to the counter, explained the chicken was refrigerator cold, and asked them to reheat it. I'm writing this today with an upset stomach. I wish I could say this was a one-time issue. It's not. I've been trying this restaurant, on and off, for over 15 years, and I kept giving them chance after chance because I wanted so badly for it to be good. I first met the owner when he ran a food truck, before the restaurant existed. I was excited; there weren't many Jamaicans in Austin at the time, and I was happy to support one. The rice and peas was so bad I threw the plate away. Years later, I tried the restaurant location. I ordered curry goat, took it to my car, and found the meat flavorless, fatty, and poorly trimmed; basically inedible. I threw it away in the parking lot. I later ordered oxtail through Uber Eats: flavorless again, poorly prepped meat, and an actual rock in the rice and peas. I tried introducing the child to Jamaican food with one of their beef patties, and it was dry and flavorless. Yesterday I ordered the "safest" thing on the menu, brown stew chicken, specifically because I no longer trust myself to spend real money on anything more ambitious here. I still got food that had clearly been microwaved and reheated unevenly, served with a piece of chicken that was still cold. Are we really selling microwaved leftovers out of an established restaurant with a huge kitchen? Jamaican food is something our culture takes real pride in. This restaurant has had a decade and a half to get it right, and instead I've watched it consistently cut corners on seasoning, on prep, and now on basic food safety. I don't say this lightly: if you want real Jamaican food, this isn't where you'll find it, and depending on the day, what you're served may not even be handled safely.

Came here for an early dinner on a Tuesday, I was the only patron. My food came out within a few…read moreminutes of my ordering it. I went for a regular oxtail plate with gungo rice and plantains. Overall I liked it! The oxtail was tender and delicious, the sauce had a nice mix of smoke, sweetness, and a tiny bit of heat. For a regular (as opposed to their large) size plate it felt like a good amount of oxtail I thought based on the description the gungo rice would have a more prominent coconut taste but it was pretty typical Jamaican peas and rice. The star of the plate was the oxtail and the sides don't really factor into my review unless it really stands out in one direction or the other Overall I'd definitely recommend giving them a try and will absolutely be back here to try more of their menu

I have been wanting to try Bikkle Jamaican Restaurant for some time now. Friends were coming into…read moretown and wanted Jamaican food. Ding ding!!! We decided to eat at Bikkle, close to the University of Texas at Austin on Guadalupe Street. Bikkle is known for its authentic Jamaican cuisine such as jerk chicken, oxtails (hard to find anywhere anymore) and curry goat. Between the four of us, we ordered jerk chicken, curry goat, and curry chicken. We all went for red beans and rice with cabbage. All dishes came with plantain, which is one of my favorites. Having been to Jamaica a couple of times, I can report out that this food is authentic! The flavors were swirls of goodness in every bite. The food was also warm when served. We also ordered jerk chicken egg rolls. Just think about that concept for a minute. The jerk chicken egg rolls were exceptionally good. The highlight for me was the curry goat. First, you do not find goats on many menus. The curry goat was tender and oh so flavorful. Some pieces had associated fat. All in all, everyone was happy with their meals. During our dinner, only one person was serving customers. She was super friendly and personable. I must think she was overworked as the stream of customers came in. Now for the décor...if you walked in and looked only at the counter, you would have thought it was a "to go" restaurant only as many "to go" containers were stacked high on the counter. Only one other couple sat down and ate in the restaurants and most folks were picking up their food to go. Even the people eating inside the restaurant were served in "to go" containers. The inside is minimalist with no ornate furnishings and yellow walls, projecting a Caribbean feel. Recommend adding a bit more Jamaican artifacts such palm trees, Jamaican flag, surfboard, etc. It would be a great spot for students, friend meet ups and a causal date night... Bikkle Jamaican Restaurant it was great and represented authentic Jamaican food well! We definitely will be returning.

It was different hearing "Trap Music" from a caribbean restaurant but it fit the name perfectly. The food was amazing! We had Rasta Pasta with added oxtail, oxtail plate with sweet plantain and greens & escovitch fish with fries. All the dishes were seasoned well with nice sized portions. For drinks we had a lemon drop and I was made a rum punch which isn't on the drink menu. Shout out to RJ the new Executive Chef. He realized my first snapper wasnt up to his standard and cooked a new one for me before the first one came out. Can't wait to see what he does with the upcoming menu change.

I was visiting a friend in Austin and we were about to go out on the town and decided we wanted to stop and get some food. They brought me to Traphouse and I saw a posting for the Oxtail Grilled Cheese. I think it was like $18 so I was hoping it would be filling boy it was! It was a great size, had a good amount of oxtail and and it was seasoned so well! I literally have no critiques. We came on a Saturday night and there was music playing but not sure if they have a DJ on certain nights or not. It was a very chill and relaxed environment and I would definitely come back. I had some friends try their vegan patties and they really enjoyed it as well.

Finally got to try this place and I was not disappointed one bit!…read more I had to check it out in person too. Really nice spot that has a lot of seating. It was nice and cool on this hot summer day. Service was great and pretty quick. The food is really tasty! The spice was perfect in my opinion. Can't wait to try something else on the menu here. Thank you!

I'm a huge fan of authentic Jamaican food, so I was really excited to pop into Tony's this…read moreafternoon. While the kitchen definitely knows how to bring the flavor, the rest of the experience was less than exceptional. When we walked in, I asked the staff for their local favorites. I expected them to say jerk chicken, but they immediately suggested the oxtail. It felt a little bit like they were trying to clear out the fridge, but we decided to be adventurous and ordered both the oxtail and the chicken anyway. With two sodas, the total came out to about $50. The counter help seemed not overly enthusiastic about us being there, but we drove a distance to get here. The first thing we noticed was the lighting--or lack thereof. It was so darkly lit inside that it felt a bit gloomy, almost like they were trying to save on the electric bill. When our food arrived in plastic boxes, the presentation was a bit of a mystery. It looked messy and "muddy" on the plate, to the point where I didn't even snap a photo. You definitely have to trust the process here because it doesn't look like a gourmet presentation. The food does taste good. Once we closed our eyes and dove in, the kitchen totally redeemed itself. The flavors were surprisingly authentic and very close to what I love about Jamaican cooking. The meat was super tender and full of flavor, the rice was nicely seasoned, and the fried plantains were a sweet, and delicious. Tony's has a ton of potential because the chef clearly has skills. BUT, for $50, I do wish the restaurant had a bit more energy, brighter lights, and prettier plating. Personally, I feel as though their prices are a little steep for what you get. If you don't mind a super casual, dark atmosphere and messy presentation, the tasty seasoning makes it worth a try.
