When I asked him about it, he laughed and said it is a poor man's 401K. This poor man's program, called a SEP, would allow contributions (up to 25% of income) to be before taxes...reducing my tax base! The funds he suggested for my investments were mediocre. He did not look the picture holistically that would provide the best financial benefit to me, such as taking into account goals to be achieved, best way to borrow money (for home renovations, buying a car...) but rather just invest the money you give him. Of course, how you are treated is based on how much money you invest. I am young, so I don't have a lot to invest now, but by investing now and over the long haul, I provide longevity to him in the future. He seemed to miss the point. Additionally, he never followed through on actions he committed to. The only thing that was consistent were his advertisements for his or Financial Planning Services speaking engagements, that cost money...If he is already earning money off my investments, why do I need to pay for the same advice twice? I have left Financial Planning Services to go with Smith Barney in Bethesda and the difference is 180 degree change, exceeding my expectations.
