My company offerers EFE as a 401K rebalancing and management option through Fidelity. Many large corporations offer this option with the company. That is how they built their core business for the past decades I believe. As an example for the past 24 months my 401K is up 27%. I'm completely hands off. It was even hard to tell what I was seeing was their fees in my account history; edelman wasn't noted anywhere, it just had the funds that were being sold to pay for their fees, so I had thought it was some kind of fee from the fund until talking to someone at Vanguard who said it was Edelman. I worked with Edelman Financial for over 15+ years. I cannot say enough terrible things about them. My specific advisor Kristine Chase was awful, she never serviced us, nor care about my family's well being. The returns are average at best. They claim to manage account, but do nothing. you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to cancel.

I decided to try Edelman for one of my 401Ks. In three years, my return is roughly 1% annually. The main reason is the excess amount of money they have allocated me into bond funds (even though my risk profile is set as moderately aggressive) and mistimed bets on international equity. Edelman gets a complete F on reading the bond market and their algorithms are pretty worthless overall. I could have done better simply putting all of my 401K into a balanced fund. The bottom line is while the overall market has roared forward, my money under Edelman has done nothing. read more

I decided to trust Edelman financial with my retirement account after listening to his program on the radio for many months where he bragged about beating the S&P 500. After three years my portfolio grew a mere 1% per year. The first year I gave it the benefit of the doubt because of covid. But two years later still pitiful results. Mean while the S&P 500 grew at about 30 %. I had to contact them to have my RMD adjusted for the new year. I am very disappointed to say the least would not trust them with my money. read more

I've long since moved my assets to a more capable financial adviser, but am I the only reviewer who notices how lame are the responses from the "Business Manager" to each articulated complaint or concern here? I still receive periodic mailings from the organization. "Dear: Thank you for expressing your horrifically low opinion of our service. We are sorry that you think we completely fell on our faces and wasted your time and money but, hey, if we remember, we'll let management know and implore the lovely Ms. Edelman to send you another children's book for Christmas". Wouldn't it be safe to presume that some of the individuals reviewing this organization remain (un) happily involved with this firm if for no other reason than inertia, and may be looking for more than a psychobabble laden boilerplate that conveys the same gibberish to all who bother to elucidate their concerns? This investment group touted they had ability to make sounds financial growth decisions but it only seems to applies in a bull market. During time anyone with some common market knowledge could make money. They don't have clue how to retain or show a sound marginal investment return during a fluctuating market. They allow my retirement investments to lose nearly 30% of its value over the past 18 months. With no explanation, outside it will comeback over the next 30 years. Which would make me 102 years old. They did nothing on my portfolio. The information on the site and projections are all bogus, in my opinion.

We hired Edelman to invest a large amount of money for us and after our initial appointment and giving them access to our investment accounts, we never heard from anyone again. We watched our money fall over the next several months and finally I removed their access to our funds. I would not recommend Edelman, maybe it was just their Bellevue office, but who knows. They put our funds somewhere and just left it there, watched it lose money and never touched base or re-evaluated where they were investing. Basically, didn't do their job at all! I already made back most of what they lost us in less than 2 weeks. And yes I understand the market fluctuates, but if I can figure out what to invest in with zero financial background, they should have done better for us! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

We were offered a free consultation from them by my husband's employer, Delta Air Lines. We signed up for someone to contact us. We never had any conversation with Edelman via phone, letter or email. We actually forgot we even requested it. Until one morning checking our Delta Air Lines stock (DAL, 4,500 shares) it was GONE. We were shocked since we have had a DO NOT SELL on that stock for years through Fidelity. We had no knowledge Edelman was even able to touch our money let alone sell a huge amount of stock without ever speaking to us. They have no idea when we are going to retire, what are plans are in later life, nothing. How could they, they never spoke to us. We immediately called Fidelity who told us Edelman had authority to sell the stock because we signed up with them. No, we did not. When we talked with Chris from Phoenix Edelman, he argued that we did give them permission, he has our electronic signatures. We told him to send the proof we signed, he sent a bunch of IP addresses which means nothing to me. Chris was extremely rude and said that is all he will provide us. We have had many conversations about their deceptive and unauthorized practices. ALL of this would have been avoided if they would have spoken to me at all. We never had a consultation, nothing! I asked Chris from Phoenix just so we are clear, you CAN reverse the trade, but you WON'T reverse the trade? Chris replied, Correct. I have proof of all of this. We are still fighting with them about reversing the trade. We are also working on getting Delta Air Lines to stop promoting them. Our stock was sold without our permission by a company that we didn't hire, only signed up for a consultation that never happened. This company needs a class action lawsuit! If you are thinking about going with Edelman Financial Engines, DON'T!! Don't even sign up for a free consultation like we did, they can't be trusted. Scheduled a financial planning session. No one called me at the appointed time. Ten minutes after my scheduled appointment time, I ended up having to call them to find out what's up. The receptionist said they were running behind and would call me in 10 min. Strike one! Never keep your customer waiting. If you are not going to be able to keep your appointment time, then have your assistant contact the customer to let them know. The customer should Never be in a position where they have to call to find out what is going on. They didn't actually get around to calling me until 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. Strike two! We scheduled a follow-up meeting to review my financial plan once they finished their analysis. They called a few days later and said they needed to reschedule because their office is closed that day. Seriously?? You don't even know what days your office is closed? Strike three! They called an hour before my rescheduled appointment time and said they needed to reschedule again because they were having computer problems. My time is precious. I don't have time to be wasting on theatre like this. I will work with someone who actually cares about me. Don't waste your time with them! read more

If you want a financial advisor whose idea of communication is an email once or twice a year asking if anything has changed, and a free copy of Ric's latest CD or book (!) at holiday time, this company is for you. If you want someone who is more interested in increasing YOUR net worth than theirs, look elsewhere. We invested some of our assets with EFS for quite a few years and were not impressed with either the service or the (very conservative) return. We have all of our assets with another firm now and are enjoying higher returns with lower fees along with much better communication in the form of quarterly meetings and clear reports. So I've received a LOT of messages asking for info on the company we are now using. I suspect most are financial advisors with this firm just being nosy. If I could give zero stars I would. Edelman took my funds and they have lost year over year with no communication at all from them once they got my funds. My 401k performed better year over year than what Edelman did with my funds. I told their salesman I was near retirement and did not want to take great risks with my funds but I have lost over 6K since putting my funds in thier stewardship. Beware..... these guys costs me over $200k in losses over a three year period. They invest your money on a profile (conservative, moderate, aggressive investor). Their "financial engines" manage your investment. Good luck in getting in personal attention or in persuading them to invest "your" money outside of their established computer models. I filled out a form on their website with interest in talking about financial advisor services, etc. I received a return call from someone today and when he asked what he can do for me I said I was interested in financial planning services. His response was " We don't sell financial plans you will have to contact a CFP"... WHAT?? I was taken aback by his rude and condescending tone and quickly ended the call. I made the mistake of investing a significant amount of money with the agreement that they would assist me with some complicated stock transfers regarding my parents' estate. My advisor immediately passed me off to her "assistant" who it turns out knew less about the transfer process than I did and was not very motivated to help me so I ended up negotiating the process mostly myself and with great assistance from Schwab ( after I ended my relationship with Edelman). So My wife and I moved our IRA and brokerage accounts to Edelman 2011. We also had an issue with a trust account with Wells Fargo for which great advice was offered. We went with them based on positive influence from Ric Edelman's radio show. He gives solid make sense advice. If you are looking to maximize your returns and match or beat the S&P 500 Edelman is not for you. Investing is NOT about maximizing returns it is about managing the risk. All investments have risks. If you go S&P 500 all in you are making a big mistake. Edelman invests in all sectors (banking, energy, manufacturing, natural resources etc), and maintains a balanced portfolio. So normally not all sectors collapse the same in a bear market. A diversified portfolio is the best way to maintain and protect your investment. Some complain such as they Edelman told them I need 2 million. Well that would be based on your spending patterns and how you want to live in retirement. Edelman will not lie to you they will give you a plan to reach your goal. It is up to you to lower your expectations or save more, or you may find you are on target. One thing I really like is that after your Adviser and you determine your needs and goals and give you a plan how your assets will be invested without regard to emotions including that of your adviser. Don't fool yourself into thinking that that does not matter. If your adviser is having a bad time in their personal life that can affect their outlook and the way they invest for you. That cannot happen at Edelman. Let them explain how. Believe me. Fees are reasonable and you may find lower fees elsewhere but know this. They make nothing by buying and selling your assets, Their fee is solely based on the value of your portfolio. No kickbacks from investments and no commissions. One review said something bad about a Trust with Edelman. They do not act as Trustees for trusts. For us with our Trust Issue with the terrible Wells Fargo they recommended an independent trust company. The Independent Trust company does the trust work such as taxes and distributions. Edelman does the investing. Worked out Excellent for us. Both charge fees so I could do it elsewhere with one overall lower fee but it works great and adding that Trust to our regular portfolio lowers the fees overall because of the increased value of the totality of the investments. read more

I wasn't going to review this company until I heard them say today on the raido that they were #1. So here goes, A few years ago we went to a presentation in Newport Beach that they put on. We made an appointment to see and advisor. We went to the meeting he seemed nice. Spoke about where our investments were how they were what he thought of the company etc. he wanted us to move our money so he would be controlling it. Went home and googled the advisor. Big shock!! He was being sued by the company we had our investments with and did not say a word. Very disappointed. Would not trust a company with our money who hid important information!!!!! read more

I set up a telephone appointment to talk to one of their investment counselor. They never bothered to call me. When I called them all I got was possible excuses as to why they didnt call. I told them it is not my problem and it wasnt very professional not to let me know they couldnt keep an appointment. I had previously called them and talked to the person that answered the call. I told him what I was looking for and he made the telephone appointment for today, February 25,2020 at 12:30pm. I found out about them by listening to their radio show on Saturday mornings. This review is for the person who has 500k+ to invest in the stock market - not a lot - but enough of an investment to expect good service from Edelman Financial Services. I am a professional with a good job. Ten years ago, I knew nothing about the stock market. After starting my own business, I found Edelman and opened a retirement account (SEP) with them. I gave 50k+ a year to Edelman. They promised to invest my money wisely. My Edelman adviser promised to meet me each year to discuss my financial needs and goals; however, I rarely heard from him. I met him one time, at the beginning, when he asked me to sign on the dotted line. After that first (and only) meeting, he put my money in extremely conservative funds. My account consisted of ten funds that were passively managed by other companies. I had to pay Edelman $10,000 a year - to passively manage ten funds that were passively managed by other companies! My Edelman advisor should have noticed that the funds he picked for me made no money and even lost money during the ten year period I stayed with Edelman. When I questioned my adviser about the excessive losses, he always stated that the market was "taking a downturn." Instead of monitoring my losses, my advisor seemed more concerned with his commissions. I do not know if he was officially "churning" my investments, but I do know that he had unusual buying practices. One week he would buy some shares and the next week he would sell the same shares at the same price. This went on for years, week after week. My advisor never ventured outside those ten funds, even though he knew I was not making any money. When I finally had time during Covid to review my account history, I was shocked to see that he bought and sold the same funds over and over again for years, without making any profit. When I told him I wanted to roll over my retirement account into another institution's 401k, he told me to do it myself. When I reminded him that he managed my account, he said he would have Edelman cash out my account and send me a check. I repeated that I wanted to ROLL OVER my retirement account to another institution, NOT cash it out. I told him that the IRS would severely penalize me for early withdrawal if Edelman cashed out my account and sent me a check in my name. We went back and forth on this simple principle. He finally agreed to release the funds directly to the other institution. My account was transferred to a Fidelity retirement account. I slowly sold the laggard funds that my advisor had bought. I reinvested the money in stocks and ETFs, on my own. I looked at high performing ETFs, with solid tech investments. I bought individual stocks to mirror the ETF holdings. I looked at the size/percentage of their respective holdings. I looked at what Bill Gates and Warren Buffett bought and sold. I followed the hedge fund gurus and scrutinized their option choices. I diversified. Since transferring my money out of Edelman a few months ago, I have made over 224k on my stock choices. I left Edelman because I was tired of seeing my money go down the drain. My point is this: do not be afraid to buy stocks on your own. Do not blindly give your money to an institution like Edelman. If you do, make sure you know exactly what they are charging you. Make sure you know what they are investing in, and why. Make sure they are doing things that benefit YOU. My financial advisor seemed like a nice man when I met him, but he did not help me at all. He only benefited himself and Edelman. If he had looked at my finances, he would have seen that I already had a lot of money in conservative assets and real estate. He should have been more aggressive with my money. He never once asked me what I wanted to invest in and never asked me what level of risk I wanted. I wish I had paid closer attention to what Edelman was doing. I made the mistake of trusting them with my money. I do not know if Edelman violated any laws, but I do know that they did not help me. Before we even could meet with anyone from EFE, we spoke with a very helpful advisor, Brendan, who got us pointed in the right direction before we could meet with him. Brendan was very interested in helping us and we ultimately signed on with EFE. We have had a great experience working with Brendan and feel like we can contact him whenever we feel it is needed. read more

Like many here, not a good experience. I was referred to Edelman from Dave Ramsey's SmartVestor Pro website. Got scheduled with Nate Parks. Phone call started off rather awkward, as if I came to them begging for help (certainly did not). Unlike others I was referred to, they seemed to have no idea where my information came from (others I spoke with mentioned very specific things regarding Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover and the Baby Steps). Nope not these guys. He dug right in what who they were like they were better than sliced bread. Oh and that they're a fiduciary. Hey, that's great but as the conversation went on, he might as well been a credit card salesman. Fees? How about 1.7% for the first $400,000 of assets under management. Got more, fees slowly trickle down with more assets under management but these fees are ridiculously high. After I told him the same pitch I told others and what I was wanting to do, he got several figures from me and basically told me to throw as much money into my retirement accounts as possible. Well, heck, I didn't need someone to give me that advice. I explained to him, again, I was looking for better tax-advantaged investments to put money in to and that yes, I would increase my retirement account contributions but that would take a little time to do that. Again, I was looking for more tax advantaged investments besides retirement accounts. No, no. That basically sounded like it wasn't going to happen until I played by HIS rules. So much for fiduciary. On top of going big on retirement accounts, he wanted us to have a full years' worth of expenses in cash. Ok, well I'm working on getting to 6 months of expenses now (we have 3 months) and I can't contribute what they wanted me to contribute to retirement AND save another 9 months of expenses. It's one or the other. I explained to him that I would want to set aside 6 months of expenses first before going anything with retirement. Nope, that fell on deaf ears. Save for tomorrow first! It's hard to save for today when I throw all of my money into the future. I'm not one to live in the moment and I'm all for future-planning. However, one cannot only live in the moment and expect the future to be fine. Likewise, one cannot live for tomorrow and expect today to be fine. I can't live entirely in the future when I'm not ready for today. Sadly, the conversation went downhill from there. Nate talked down to me as if I knew nothing until finally he made a suggestion about my retirement account that I can't do. He pretended like he was an expert on my retirement account but instead told me to do something I can't do. That's when I hung up. I had enough. Edelman is interested in the high dollar too-good-for-their-own-money types walking around on a gold cloud or something. They have ZERO interest (and apparently respect) for those who work hard and want to find the best possible way to save, invest, eliminate debt and leave a legacy. Nope, they're interested in how much they can screw you over on fees by telling you to do things you could have (or probably have) figured out on your own. Do yourself a favor, tells these fools to take a hike. Unless you like the bling they dangle in front of your nose, there are FAR BETTER options out there who truly have your best interests at heart and certainly cost less and are actually pleasant to speak with. Edelman Financial Engines was reported to Ramsey Solutions for their actions. It appears they are simply using SmartVestor Pro as a lead generation tool ONLY. What a shame! read more

These guys get you with their radio ads. Their service is terrible! In five years of them managing a 401k that had no new contributions going to it they lost 43% of my money. Yes COVID-19 had it's big affect on it but they should've done good when the times were good. They didn't keep up with the S&P500, the Dow, or any market index funds. Avoid! BTW: It took 90+ minutes over two days to get their management of my account cancelled. Their website talks about the wide range of services they offer, but fails to mention that they only provide services if they are managing your money. Further, their promised free, no obligation consultation, turned into a meeting in which they wanted to find out more about us and push their expertise at managing money (at what felt to us as high rates). We were highly disappointed in the loss of the time we spent preparing to talk with them and upset about how they mislead us into sharing personal financial information. I've seen some other reviews about how good they are at investment management, on which we have no opinion, but contact them and share your information only if you are looking for an investment manager. read more

Last July, I took money sitting in a no interest checking, and invested it with Edelman, now I realize in the big scheme of things its not much, but it represented a few years of savings, and I watched it lose 20% so far without a call, with no changes in strategy, they are just not responsive. I was told, just leave it in Charles Schwab, and over the long haul it will do better. The rep put me in highly volatile stocks, and I am 61 close to retirement, so I feel the advise was awful, and I would stay far away from this company. read more

After clicking on their financial risk planning tool and leaving it half way I was pretty confident I did not sign up for their service. Next thing you know, they completely take over the account. They have no T&C documents to show for proof other than showing some web logs. I will not trust this company with my money ever. The lost all my trust by the way they operate. Stay away from this company! Stick with a name brand financial planner than someone like Edelman. They are one of the worst when it comes to engaging clients. I answered one of their incessant phone calls and told them that I am hearing-impaired and that I don't want their phone calls. The guy asked me to repeat the answers to the questions I had already answered via SmartAsset (where I was looking to find a Financial Advisor). The 'fact' they are rated #1 in quality by Barron's made me lose all respect for Barron's ratings. I should have read the Yelp reviews first... They are smart to block any comments or posts on their Facebook page - I would have ripped them a new one. Under the current situation 2/24/22 I wanted to change my 401k to the Stable Fund intel the current situation cools off then move funds back into the market, Edelman closed my accounts. They said we don't work that way. I gave them control for 5 months and I lost 7% of my retirement plan under their watchful eyes. They have lost their direction and the understanding of what a fiduciary means. I would love to hold them accountable for poor business decision. I was considering using Financial Engines' Professional Management service for my portfolio, so I reviewed my 401(k) account on their website (they have access to my financial information via the company where I work). A few of the numbers didn't agree with what I found on my 401(k) administrator's website, so I called their customer service desk to see if they could explain the disparity. The first representative I got couldn't answer my questions. He said he had only recently started the job and he was going to get another representative better qualified to answer my questions. The second representative, although supposedly more seasoned, couldn't answer my questions either. He said he didn't have access to what I was looking at, that their layout was different, so it was difficult to discuss the specifics of what I was seeing. He asked me to take a screen shot of what was displayed on my screen and e-mail it to him. I did. He said he'd refer my problem to another associate and, with the screen shot, they should be able to provide me with answers to my questions. That was on a Friday. On the following Monday, I received a call from a third representative. I wrongly assumed this guy was referred to me from the second representative and he was from a higher tier of support. I was wrong. It's not quite clear to me how this guy got pulled into the situation, but he knew nothing more than the other two representatives I'd spoken to. Once I realized he was repeating the same thing the other two representatives had said, I asked if he was the next tier of support, senior to the first two representatives I'd spoken to. He said he was not, that he was the same level as the other two representatives. I explained to him that I was considering using Financial Engines to manage my portfolio but that I had some questions about the information on their site and if I could speak to his manager or the next higher level of customer support. He told me there was no higher level of support and that "we could continue to go around and around about the questions and get the same answer or move forward" with talking about the management of my portfolio. I was taken aback by the abject rudeness and outright lying exhibited by the representative. I told him we didn't have anything further to discuss, that he'd help me make up my mind and no further discussion was needed. To their credit, I did get a follow-up from the second representative to whom I'd sent the screen shot. He had referred the questions and screen shot to a fourth representative (not clear if she was the same level as he or not) and she was calling back to discuss the matter. I figured the third representative hadn't relayed the earlier conversation and, so, explained that the answer to the questions, at that point, was moot and that I'd decided to work with another brokerage firm. She apologized profusely and we ended the conversation. Not long after that, I got another call from a fellow who described himself as being a part of upper management. Again, I explained what happened and he also apologized profusely and asked if there was anything that he could do to make things right. I told him that while I appreciate the apology, at that point, there was absolutely nothing he could change my mind. I told him that I would be sure to relay the incident to all my friends, relatives and business associates with investment accounts and encourage them to look elsewhere for financial management. read more

I have been a client with Edelman for the past 15 years. When I first went with Edelman I didn't have a lot of money to invest. They still made me feel like I was just as important as their wealthiest clients. Shortly after hiring Edelman they formulated a financial plan based on my needs and expectations, that plan is in effect to this day and on schedule. I know that as long as I stick to their plan, I will be able to retire on schedule and with the assets that I will need. Edelman welcomes the small investor as well as the large investor; they give no one the cold shoulder. They take all their clients' interests and investments very serious.
