I worked with Steve Harrison, who was great and answered all my questions. But when the loan got sent to underwriting, it just stalled and stalled. They would ask me for a couple things which I would send, and then not respond until noon on a Friday (and the underwriter would go home at 2:30 PM on Fridays). This happened twice and stalled the loan both times. They even asked for the same exact things on three separate occasions, again stalling before I could respond. I called the underwriters multiple times, called their supervisor multiple times, and never got ahold of any of them by any method other than email, even though they all put their phone numbers in their signatures. The loan was conditionally approved and then dropped at the last second because of one of these pieces of information. All easily clarified by phone. They locked me early and then dropped me four weeks later instead of actually talking to me. The salespeople were great and helpful, which is why I'm giving two stars. But the underwriters ended up costing me $800 by their delays and wasting a ton of my time, since a quick conversation probably would've sorted the situation out early enough for me to get another lender before my next monthly payment. If you have completely vanilla income and there's nothing at all complicated about your finances, then they're probably fine to go with- my friend uses them and is how I got the recommendation. But god forbid you have income from multiple sources that varies from year to year- you won't be able to reach the people you need to figure out whether they'll take you until you're several weeks into it. read more

Fantastic experience from start to finish! This is our second refinance with Aurora and each one was quite painless. The whole team was terrific. We worked with Dave Gravely at the start who got us a great rate which was lower than other places we shopped around, and there were no lender fees. Aurora was also very fast with the closing process so we were able to close in about 3 weeks (although in order to do this they require fast turnarounds on providing documents, signatures, etc., which is fair). Manier Sarik was our loan processor and walked us through the complex documentation process, making it about as easy as it could be, and was very responsive to emails as well. Our closer Maily Ung was also very efficient and transparent with communication. Just did a 15 yr refi at 2.5% and had a very good experience with Aurora. I worked with Stan Mitchell and his team. I called around to the local banks (Cap One, Wells Fargo, B & H; etc) and Aurora beat their rates by at least on 1/8 and for Cap One by a quarter. I thought it was too good to be true, but I read the reviews on Angie's List, where 27 out of 30 were glowing and the few bad ones were mainly due to poor credit. Its so refreshing to have the rate advertised on their website be the one you receive and there not be any hidden fees or gimmicks. I even got a nice coupon from Angie's List to offest the Appraisal Cost. Overall it took me exactly 3 weeks to close from the day Stan answered my phone call. I dealt with Dave Gravely and Marie Christensen for a mortgage. They were both extremely professional and easy to deal with. Quick responses to my many questions. These days you need to provide what, at times, seems to be an excessive amount of documentation for a mortgage approval. Aurora makes this as painless as possible with the ability to securely upload the documents online. In fact, except for a few phone calls early in the process regarding locking in rates and prequal letters, I communicated almost exclusively through email. With my schedule I appreciate that. Dave was also very accommodating and patient throughout the whole process because we had contracts on 2 houses until we closed on the third one. He was always prompt with updated prequall letters and flexible with putting a hold on the application process until we found the right house for us. They also had the best rates with no points or origination fees. I highly recommend and I would use them again without reservation. read more

The way Aurora does business is unlike any mortgage broker I have done business with in the past. I receive a shotgun blast for signatures and documents with an unreasonable and artificial due dates. I had 3 days to sign and send everything. There is always a reason when a company resorts to atypical high pressure hurry-up tactics. I think it is because I balked at the $900- appraisal estimate. They also wanted to to sign forms with blank dollar amounts on it. If they can't gouge me on the fees then they make it impossible to meet their requirements so it becomes my fault the loan didn't go through. The specifics: Although I electronically signed documents they insisted 3 had to be printed and "wet signed." Then I was to fax or scan and email them back to Aurora. Those 3 documents were authorization to run a credit report, (which they already ran), an authorization to pay $25 each to verify any of my accounts (I was told this was a just in case need) and an authorization to verify my Social Security number. Note there was no need expressed to mail the actual forms so there is no difference from the other e-documents. All the while they pressed for all kinds of bank, retirement, tax, etc. statements. Also note that none of my questions or concerns were addressed until after they canceled the loan. read more

Whatever this company may have been three or four years ago (the ages of its two other reviews), they are far from those heights now. They advertise the ability to close re-fi's in 14 days, but don't deliver. Ours was not set up as a 14-day re-fi, but we got them everything they requested with more than 14 days to spare, yet they told us that our loan couldn't close on time, and they wanted to raise our fees. In other words, they get your business by offering great terms, but then use bogus excuses to change those terms when you're so far along in the process that it is a major hassle to switch lenders. In fact, our rate lock expired on a Saturday, but they said that they don't do closings on Saturdays and that signing Monday would cost us an extra $500, so their 30-day rate lock is apparently a 29-day lock when that would generate more fees. When I insisted that everything be done to close without additional fees, I had to call their chosen title company to issue the final title report. After doing that, and despite Aurora saying it couldn't be done, we signed the papers on Friday (the 29th day) and the loan funded the following week. If I had just accepted what they were telling me, it would have cost us $500 more. Not a huge amount of money in the context of a mortgage, but it's the kind of tactic that I would not expect from an honest lender. The bottom line is that they aren't trustworthy enough to choose over the many other options out there. They also threatened to get their attorney involved over my review, so they've got that going for them, too. read more

Based on my experience, I would probably use them again, for the following reasons: - The fees ended up being less than the good faith estimate. - The rate they offered could not be beaten. - They closed in two weeks and everything went through ok with all parties involved. Why not a five star? They didn't tell me we were closing until the day of, could not ever get me a settlement amount to be paid (since we fixed the amount we wanted to borrow), the subcontracted notary that came to our house showed up 2 hours late (forcing me to miss a baby shower), and despite at least 10 phone calls, have NEVER sent me the payoff statement from my old mortgage (which was definitely too high) or the appraisal that we paid for. So they are a headache to deal with - I've never seen such a pathetic response from "professionals", but I'll forget about it in a few months when I'm saving money on my mortgage. Just be forewarned that they are sloppy and annoying to deal with. read more

The house was a foreclosure and so it was a little more complicated than the regular sale but they were able to handle it without any problems. They also gave really sound advice about how to handle the more complex nature of our purchase. I think that some of the advice they gave actually helped us to steer clear from some potential issues. I recently refinanced a rental property with Steve Haynes from Aurora Financial. I cannot stress enough how easy, fast, and truly excellent this service was. In an afternoon I was given a rate that was so low I wondered if the business was reputable, but I checked their reviews on another website (Zillow.com), and checked their BBB rating (A+), so I went ahead with the process. (Note that their business is in Virginia when you do your own review search). I closed 3 weeks after my initial phone call. (Let me compare this experience to a refi with my primary residence using a major bank. That one took 8 months!). Steve was particularly fast, professional, and accessible. And he honored his initial rate quote. At one point in the process I was transfered to the loan processor, but this is standard in my experience with banks and loan brokerage firms. One note: If you are going to use them and want to close fast, be ready to gather your financial information quickly, as their rate locks expire one or two days after the quote. I had my documents accessible because of my primary home refi, but just a head's up. If there are any questionable issues in your credit report, you may need to write a short letter of explanation. That is typical these days. There were no surprises in the actual document signing. I was shocked at how many zeros there were in the fees portion of the HUD. Very low fees, low rate, and an overall easy and pleasant experience. read more

With any refi, there are a lot of factors that contribute to your success, including how organized you are with your own documents, what type of property you have (condos are tougher), and whether you are underwater on your mortgage. My stuff was organized and circumstances were good, so that contributed to the speed, but Aurora was great to work with. They helped me find good deals on title and appraisal services, and didn't charge any lender fees. They locked in my rate quickly and answered questions promptly, and were quick to follow up when they needed something to move things along. Great customer service!!! Louis T. and Maria B. were both great in assisting me with the refinancing of my FHA loan into a conventional loan. I contacted Louis on 04/03/15 and was able to close on by 04/20/15, but I chose to close later. I was able to obtain the lowest interest rate compared to other lenders I contacted. They worked with Global Title. Denise M. at Global was also great. Between Louis and Denise, my questions were answered quickly, efficiently, and kept me at ease.
