Like the previous reviewer, our tax situation has gotten a lot more complex over that time-- being in and out of the military, being a student, having babies, getting married, having investments, etc. Last year, after the DOD didn't provide information showing they paid some of my student loans (which counts as income), we received a letter from the IRS saying that we failed to report income and owed upwards of $4K (we had previously received a refund). We were obviously quite distraught, but as it turned out, the IRS messed up in their calculations and a simple phone call from our accountant cleared it up and we didn't have to pay anything. It's going to cost a bit more than going to a chain, but I think it's well worth it to know that it's done right. The accountants know what they are talking about and they stay in touch throughout the year with reminders, checklists, etc. It's also pretty cool how they provide you with a summary folder afterword that includes your tax return, as well as a neat visual analytics sheet of your information.

July 2024 Update for Tax Year 2023…read more Mark Frye has amazed my wife and I even more this year than in years before (see below). The complexity of our finances, compounded by our farm income and expenditures, was beyond anything my wife and I were able to handle on our own. Mark's knowledge of the tax codes is awe inspiring, and he and his team put together the most comprehensive, thorough tax return we have ever seen. When we retire, we'll be sad to leave Virginia...but from Tennessee, we will still use Mark Frye as our CPA and tax preparer. He truly is the best there is. Tax year 2022 update Frye & Company, CPAs did another exemplary job for my wife and I this tax year (2022). We had sought a good tax company a couple of years ago to deal with estate tax matters with regard to my late parents' estates, and he handled not only that but our state and federal returns effortlessly. We were so pleased that we kept coming back to him. This year, we had not only the residual tax issues with the estates as they finally closed, but rollover issues with my wife's retirement funds, and the big one: in 2022, we bought a farm in Tennessee where we intend to build our retirement home. We had a row cropper plant it, and it returned us income immediately. We also had no idea whatsoever how to handle the whole thing from a tax perspective. Frye & Company, CPAs did, and had tax returns for Virginia and two other states, and of course our Federal return, prepared and e-filed on time. We knew we would owe something, but our estimates were overly conservative - we owed significantly less. Reviewing the returns (which were the longest I've ever seen), I could follow the reasoning and see that it was right - but my wife and I could never have done it on our own. It takes expertise far beyond what a non-professional could ever amass. When we eventually do move to Tennessee, we will still keep using Frye & Company, CPAs, even if it means traveling back to Virginia to go over our documentation: especially so, since they are wonderful people, and it's a pleasure dealing with them. Tax Year 2021 - We first meet Mark Frye My wife and I have used Turbo Tax until this year, when, due to inheritance issues, we decided to look for a CPA who was also skilled in estate law. We hit the jackpot with Mark Frye. Our initial meeting was with him personally. He laid out his company capabilities thoroughly (just what we were looking for), then briefly glanced through the tax file we brought. He immediately spotted an error that Turbo Tax had made in our 2021 filing, and we proactively filed amended state and federal returns - avoiding nasty grams from the tax folks.
