My family and I are fairly new to Victoria and thought we'd try Pluto's -- a diner built in a reclaimed gas station. They have a huge menu yet offer nothing that you wouldn't find anywhere else: burgers, steak, club sandwich, fish & chips, etc. Nor does Pluto's offer a twist on any of the common dishes. This was a letdown, but we were very hungry at this point so decided to give it a try.
After ordering our meals, the waitress returned to tell us that they were out of stock on one of our entrees. She kindly comped us a free glass of wine for the inconvenience. We reordered. Forty-five minutes later, I asked our waitress, "Where's our food?" She apologized, saying the restaurant was really busy. I looked around the diner: only one-third of the tables were occupied by guests. Hardly "busy."
When the food arrived, it was a total disappointment. I ordered eggs benedict with chorizo. I have had the best eggs benedict of my life in Victoria -- at Rebar -- and have been so impressed with Victoria bakery Fol Epi for curing their own pepperonis that somehow I was expecting good things from Pluto's. Wrong. The chorizo was a puzzle to me right from the start. Rather than the distinctive smokiness and deep red colour you expect of Chorizo, it was the colour and texture of Pumpernickel bread: dark brown and grainy. And this "sausage" came in an oblong, flat slice, also like Pumpernickel. While I have never actually eaten wood shavings, I am certain that this is what their texture must be like. The hashbrowns -- surely the one thing any restaurant should get right -- were undercooked and inedible. My son's hamburger was undercooked, and other things we ordered showed no imagination or skill in their preparation. The website boasts: "All our food is made in house from scratch by people who really care about the products they serve." Don't believe it.
The ambience of the old gas station is still palpable: the caverous space where mechanics used to repair automobiles is the dining room, but it is no less noisy. Fans, blenders, clattering kitchen noises, espresso machines and voices echo loudly and shrilly, making it difficult to hold a conversation.
If you feel like going to a restaurant to experience something new, avoid Pluto's.
