I have been attending the Puget Sound Zen Center, both on Vashon and more recently in West Seattle,…read morefor about three years. It is a wonderfully open, cheerful, and thoughtful community, both for experienced practitioners and for those coming for the first time. There are great tips for first-timers here: https://pszc.org/new-to-zen/. I would add two quick things if you are coming for the first time. First, it is a good idea to arrive 15-20 minutes early, regardless of which meditation you attend. It is helpful to get a few pointers on where to sit and what to expect. People will be glad to offer suggestions, and there is always someone assigned specifically to help newcomers. Just ask for "the Shoji." Second, if you do not need wheelchair access, the entrance is right up the steps in the front of the building. The front is the side that looks out on the driveway where you drove in. Like Zen itself, the place has many doors. Like Zen itself, this can be a little confusing. If you need a more accessible entrance, the double doors will be on your right. If they are not open, just knock and someone will no doubt let you in. There is also a satellite Zen Center in West Seattle that meets on Monday nights at Fauntleroy UCC. You can find the schedule and other information for both Zen Centers here: https://pszc.org/.

The practice is…read morerooted in a centuries-old tradition (Rinzai Zen), which feels strong, something I can lean into. When you first start, it might feel foreign, very different, but don't let that dissuade you; the practice, here, is to be true to the discipline while also learning how to teach & apply it in our culture. I also love that there are so many ways to be involved -- from working in the meditation garden, or working in the food garden (food is donated to the food bank), the Racial Healing group - or sitting in meditation on Zoom (every day there's at least one sit). But the thing I appreciate the most is the feeling I get that everyone is sincere, not judgmental or self-righteous. Really just learning how to practice no-self and, from within, transform greed, hatred and ignorance (the vows we say at every sit).

A yogi's hidden gem in Pierce County…read more I am in such deep gratitude for this yoga studio. It all started over a year ago when I moved myself and my family out here to this area. I knew I wanted to get back into yoga and decided to try out Tuladhara's new student special last summer for my birthday gift to self. Best decision of my 30's thus far! Fast forward to over a year now being at this studio: 1. I have never felt more connected to Self while practicing on my mat nowadays, all thanks to the amazing teacher staff here (special shout out to Alicia, Leslie, Laura, Sona and Caitlin!). 2. I am officially certified as a 200 Hour RYT myself THANKS to this studio. I took their 200 Hour training earlier this year and have since then graduated (extremely life-changing experience for those interested in becoming a certified yoga instructor or to simply deepen your practice). 3. Still one of the cleanest (with no marketing BS) yoga studios I've practiced in. If you're new to yoga, come to Tula. If you're not-so-new-but-would-like-to-come-back-to-it, come to Tula. If you just want to feel "at home" on your mat, come to Tula.

My latest class was with Kat and it was the Yin Candle light (Cate is usually the instructor). What a relaxing way to end the week with stretches that hold and test your will to just be. Another class I have taken and loved is the gong bath meditation with Wayne Barto. The vibration of the enormous gongs send you in to a state of pure bliss and total submission to just give in to the space and be renewed through their energy. I have my class pass for the next few months. Meet me at the mat.

The method they teach here is the first one that actually made sense to me, and at this point it's just part of my life. The biggest change is what happens when something difficult comes up. When emotions would surge or I'd hit a stretch of feeling completely flat and unmotivated, I used to have no idea what to do with myself. I'd just sit in it and struggle. Now I know exactly what to do: I meditate the way this center taught me. Having that to reach for has been genuinely life-changing. I also worried a lot about how to keep this up, because my schedule makes it hard to get here in person. Chami's online sessions solved that completely. They're perfect. She's so good at taking you straight into the meditative state, whether it's a few minutes I've carved out in the middle of a workday, or early morning, or before bed. Highly, highly recommend. If you've tried meditation and given up before, try this place.

The most at peace I have ever felt was when I was doing the steps. I went for a year and only got to level two but in doing so let go of so much. Meditation isn't something you can set aside and pick up whenever you feel bad. Your brain is a muscle and needs exercise or it will return back to the state it was before you started meditating. This is where I am now. If I had the means to go back and start again I would. It is a game changer.

Don't forget to greet and meet the nice monks here to have a positive conversation. The main hall I see a beautiful giant Buddha statue with wooden background. They also have a Vietnamese weekend class for kids .I had the chance to eat their vegetarian Bún bò Huế and Banh Bao, both tasted excellent! I highly recommend this Temple for any one in Tacoma area.

It is a beautiful marriage of Worshipping Jesus with your whole body. Jesus First, Yoga Second. I adore Michelle, the founder of YF. She truly has a heart for ministry and makes sure that Jesus gets the platform not her.
