PLJ Carpentry reinstalled two sets of exterior deck steps for me last fall after they were removed during a patio project. The company wanted to schedule the work for around 5:00 PM. I specifically told Allan that I was concerned the job would be rushed if it started that late and asked him to make sure quality wasn't sacrificed just to get it done. He assured me multiple times that the work would not be rushed and that everything would be done properly. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. The steps were essentially slapped back together with little attention to detail. Boards were misaligned, gaps were inconsistent, and sections of the steps were installed directly against the shingles instead of being properly fitted and finished. After I raised concerns, Allan promised the issues would be corrected and personally assured me everything would be made right. Based on those assurances, I gave the company a second chance. After the crew returned, communication stopped and my text messages went unanswered. When I eventually returned home and inspected the work, the steps were in even worse condition. The PVC decking was scratched and damaged, and the installers drove screws directly through the decking without properly pre-drilling for the matching plug system. As a result, the holes couldn't even be plugged afterward, leaving an unacceptable finished product. In hindsight, I should have terminated the project after the initial installation and walked away from the deposit instead of giving the company a second chance. Unfortunately, the corrective work was worse than the original installation. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend using a different contractor. read more

Had them out for a quote on cedar shingling 3 sides of house (about 11 square, ie 1100 sq ft) and a covered porch running the 25' length of front of house, 6 ft wide with steps, a gable and metal roof on a Cape Cod style home with gambrel gables. Shingling estimate was $14k for labor only (I was to provide shingles, since i had 3.5 square left after having done the back of house myself). Nearly $1300 per square! But the porch estimate was truly absurd. $98K, yes, $98,000! Porch area just 125 sq ft. I estimated demo of existing narrow porch roof and shingles at 1 day, dig 6 holes for porch support at 1 5 days (generous), frame the sloped roof and gable (maybe 1.5 days for 2 guys, so 3 days), plywood (2 guys 1 day, generous), metal roof ( 2 guys 1.5 days, generous), deck, trim, stairs another 3 man days. So about 13.5 man days, generously. Materials maybe $10k for metal roof, lumber, decking, pvc trim, etc. Even at $1000 per man day, very, very generous, ie $125 per hour, that's $23.5k. His estimate was 4 times that. I usually say to myself, what would I think a fair estimate to be and then expect a contractor to come in at twice as much, NOT 4 TIMES AS MUCH. I guess they deal with people with deep pockets or totally ignorant of what's involved. Just a waste of my time to even have them come out for such a crazy estimate. read more

Stay far away from PLJ they gave me a price of 45000 to 60000 for a 600 square foot deck 30 inches off ground with pt wood had another contractor do Trex transcend for 23000 They are way out of line with their prices. I was promised a late day estimate that never came. Here it is Friday, and still no estimate, a text or phone call. Because they would not make thousands of dollars on this job, they are no longer interested, but never replied to me. They are very unprofessional and rude. I will tell everyone I know not to bother with this company. And here it is, 5 days later, I received a text from them, telling me that they would send me an estimate by the end of the day that never came. I can't do business with an unreliable company who lies and doesn't follow up. Don't waste your time with them. They don't follow through and lie. read more

I contracted to have windows and doors updated as well as a deck replacement. Since I am in a condo, must comply with specifications. Project lasted way longer than needed (didn't order doors or windows until deck was done) then a) ordered the wrong door, wrong color, b) ordered the wrong size storm door. I accepted the wrong door as a compromise since PLJ promise dto paint it and to move the project along since winter was moving in. Then they schedule window install, replacement storm door is wrong color. I wanted a factory cured storm door (not a painted one) and we agreed they would order the correct storm in the correct color. 2 weeks after that agreement, I get a text to pick out the storm door (which had already been spec'd in the original quote which I had already paid for the project cost) . I had no choice but to fire them if I ever want the project completed. I notified them by text response and never heard from them again..... interestingly, haven't heard boo from them since. So I am in my second winter month with no storm door....and no apology. read more

PLJ installed a roof on my home and within a year and a half it started leaking. I told them about it and they said that they installed the roof correctly. I don't understand how the roof was installed correctly if there is water coming into my house from the roof? They subsequently sent me a proposal for $4,500 to rip off the roof, and if they felt that the roof was installed correctly, then I would have to pay them an additional $4,500. Very disappointing. I paid the $17,000 for a roof that leaks. read more

I called them to meet me at my condo unit . I was running late . He stayed and waited for me . He gave me an estimate . The worker came in and finished the ceiling and painted . Very efficient and professional work. Quote was very competitive and work their roofing team worked amazingly hard and smart. We have a good-sized duplex and garages that needed around 30 squares of shingles. Also, we had 2 layers of shingles on it that needed to be stripped, making for more debris. They replaced some damaged plywood and put in new vents for bathroom and garage. Their 9-person roofing team started early on a Saturday around 7am and the entire roof was stripped, replaced and cleaned up by 5pm! It was amazing how hard and efficiently they worked. What was also impressive was they had their own containers - they didn't have to rent and have another company take it away. They dropped a container in the morning, came back later to drop another one and took the first one away. They were fair and easy to work with - can't wait for the drone video of the completed work! read more

I had a garage room to finish off with cladding in shiplap. Carlos and Taylor came on the scheduled day, checked in with me, and started work immediately. They worked efficiently and with care, completing all the necessary prep work on the first day and completing everything on the third. I made an error and didn't specify unprimed shiplap, so primed shiplap was delivered. They were more than professional about returning the unwanted product and went out themselves to replace it. I had also forgotten to include cladding the outer part of the wall in the contract, and the company was more than fair in negotiating a reasonable additional cost for that work and did more than I expected--all will smiles and obvious pride in their work. The project manager visited twice to ensure all was going well, including a final inspection with me present. Again, our interaction could not have been more pleasant. The quality of the work is excellent, very precise, and I would turn to PLJ Carpentry again if I needed additional work on the property. and highly recommend them for high quality work, excellent communication, and fair pricing. read more

we interviewed several companies to have our cedar shingles replaced on one side of our house. the quote we recieved was very professional and complete. their price was right in line with the other quotes we received. We felt very comfortable going with PLJ. Our experience couldn't have been more positive. The shingles were delivered a few days prior to the start of the work. They were placed neatly and out of the way in our driveway. The dumpster was delivered the day before the start.the crew arrived at 8AM and got to work immediately. Janderson, the project manager came by a little while later to introduce himself and to make sure I had his phone number. He came by every day to check and make sure everything was going smoothly. The crew was very respectful and worked long hours. They took time to clean up the wo area each night. when the project was finished Janderson came back to make sure we were completely satisfied. I had 2 deck posts and footers that needed replacement. Was quoted 1 to 2 days. Took 9 days after repeated errors by workers. Footers were poured 8 inches below the other footers and then had to be extended so now they are very tall and an eyesore. Pictures will show that my central air compressor was shoved back and lines were damaged, even though I was told it wouldnt be in the way and I dint need to have a tech move it before work began. Posts were not safely attached to deck and were off by an inch, not even sitting flush to support deck, and footers were not centered under support locations. The biggest problems were poor work quality (repeat errors and workers dumped scraps and old footers in the woods behind my property which belongs to the city (I have pics and video to prove). Project manager had poor communication. Did not answer calls and if he replied to texts, it was hours or even a day later. One day he didnt reply to text for 2 hours until 6pm and said his phone had been dead. When I spoke to him the next morning he apologized again but this time blamed it on he was in a meeting. On the 9th day and my calls now going to voicemail and text not being answered I asked for the owner, Paulo, who was the only one t o finally resolve the matter. The whole process was a nightmare but im not allowed enough space to speak to the entirety. All Ill say is the owner was great, and I dont take leaving this review lightly, but the PM only showed urgency in speaking with me when the job was done and it was time to collect the 2nd half of payment. The owner offered me a free repair for my inconvenience and I declined because I wanted to be done with everyone, even though I still have windows, cabinets, and gutters to do here and more work at 2 other properties. Ill do better homework in hiring the next carpentry company. read more
