I adore this place! It's always clean, well stocked and has many of the more obscure items I buy…read moresuch as soy curls and tofutti which I don't see anywhere but here anymore. The produce department is my favorite. Their lettuce and kale bunches are large, local and priced fairly. A great store for vegans/vegetarians! It is a little tight in there as it's not a large store but it is concentrated and laid out well. The staff is usually always friendly but as with any place, there are occasional exceptions. I'd recommend not shopping in the late afternoon as the traffic in that area gets pretty congested.

This is a great market! The amount of local goods they sell is really impressive! From meats, to…read morebaked goods, to soaps to, textiles...very impressive We bought mostly food items while we were here. I LOVED the baked goods by the Good Bread company from Maine. Wow, those cookies, were YUM!!! The bread was equally as delicious. We bought some packaged, snacks from the nuts/snacks aisle and unfortunately, that wasn't very good. Tasted stale/odd and we just threw it away. It won't deter us from going back there. If it's busy, which is always seems to be, be careful, while the parking lot seems big enough for people and cars, I saw very close calls with cars to cars and cars to People! Yikes. Not sure what the malfunction is, but it seems people were not going slow and paying attention. I do recommend trying this location - at least to see what they have to offer, you might like it! I definitely will be back just for the baked good section alone. I'm coming for you Molasses Cookies!

If you enjoy saving money, it's well worth the trip! As for food past the expiration date, I teach…read moremy students four rules. The general guideline is you can eat most canned foods from 1 to 5 years after the expiration date if stored in a cool, dark place and the cans are in good condition. However, don't let the year on the calendar make the decision for you. Follow these four basic rules before you devour that can of ravioli, soup, or vegetables that expired several years ago. 1. Inspect the can. If the can is damaged, rusted, or dented at the top or bottom lid it increases the risk of the food being contaminated. If the can is bulging or leaking fluid, throw it away immediately. With food items like olives, pickles, relishes or preserved fruit, observe the quality of the oil, syrup or brine. There may be a problem if the liquid appears muddy or opaque or if the liquid level has dropped significantly. 2. Open the can. If everything is so far, so good, go ahead and open the canned food. If while opening, it makes a hissing sound and/or liquid spurts out of the can, discard it. On visual inspection, the first thing to note is the color of the food. Minor color change over time is normal, but a big alteration in color or a lack of color signals a problem. If you see any mold, throw the contents in the trash. 3. Smell the food. If the above steps go well, give the food a good sniff. There is no better judge as to whether food is rotten than the sniffer test! It should smell fresh without an unusual or unpleasant odor of any kind. 4. Taste it. Lastly, you can give the food a taste. Keep in mind that long-term storage can affect the flavor of some foods, particularly if it was sweetened. With the money you save by not tossing out canned goods when they reach their expiration date, you can hopefully be better able to afford the rising gas and heating oil prices!

WARNING! The 2025 Caswell's is under new ownership and the prices of "the old days" are no longer…read more You can buy a box of generic mac and cheese at walmart for .58 cents or you can go to Caswells and pay over $1.25 for a box of mac and cheese that is crushed, covered in dust, and a month from expiring. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! Shame on the New Owners for taking advantage of the elderly and the poor and everyone else that goes there. The Caswell's that everyone came to know and love through the years is DEAD and has ceased to extend its' legendary status in 2025. I has to add 1 star, btw, to post this. Pathetic.
