We ended up at Pushaw Lake Campground, which only fit part of that bill. The boat rental was quite reasonable --- we ended up in a nice Old Town tandem kayak, with not-too-grubby PFDs and fair hourly rental rates. However, even near the "tent" camping sites at the far end of the compound, there were people power-washing refrigerators, ATVs, and the like. Music wasn't the worst I've seen, but definitely there. Most of the units were set up for summer-long rentals --- some people had gone as far as taking the wheels off their trailers, or just let the tires go flat. As the afternoon got less and less pleasant, we ended up packing our tent and bailing. This place suits some people, but just isn't my speed.

Huge upsides to this place also include their reasonable rates (including those for extra people) and lack of required deposit in advance. Only downside was the internet - only worked off and on maybe 50% of the time we were here. The cell service in this region is pretty spotty as well, so I'm sure the two are related. We did not get our $500 deposit back. We are full-time travelers, so we always stay 3-4 weeks. We did not pay a deposit for a "monthly" stay, which is $750 non-refundable (this information is found in the bowels of their website - not on the reservation page), as we were not on a monthly plan. In my opinion, we should have been given our refund as stated by the KOA guidelines. It is true that the KOA Corp does not get involved in these disputes, but I feel they need to know how their franchises are being run. Sadly, even when we do get our rig fixed, we will find another place to stay.

This is a pretty standard, affordable campground. We stayed here three nights but only spent one…read moresolid day exploring the grounds and activities. We were at a water and electric site right on the pond, which was the best part about the spot. Otherwise, you are packed in like sardines. We did not find anyone at the campground to be very friendly, both neighbors/other patrons and the (limited) staff. The guy at the office on Friday and Monday was pretty surly. The weekend staff did not impress either. Unlike other campgrounds we have stayed at, there was really no one out patrolling the grounds during the day or at night. Which is both good and bad, I guess. Good because you can basically do what you want, and bad because of, well, the exact same thing. Our area of the campground was pretty quiet the days we were there, at night we were definitely the loudest people around...and aside from our 4-year-old sometimes talking loudly/excitedly, we weren't very loud. One thing I did not like about our stay was that the campground seems to encourage and not even attempt to stop kids catching and torturing the pond wildlife, like bullfrogs, tadpoles and fish. While we were there there was a gaggle of obnoxious kids catching and killing things, both accidentally and on purpose. Yet the camp store sells fish nets to help them do those things. As an avid animal lover, I found it disturbing that the campground did nothing to deter people from abusing the wildlife, and even seemed to encourage it by selling kid-size fishing nets. Let's see, what else? The bathrooms were "eh." The floor was constantly wet and muddy. The first 36 hours we were there I assumed it was because it was raining, but the following 36 hours was pretty dry and the floors were still like that for some reason. Showers were free and had hot water, but were pretty cramped. Be prepared for lots of bugs, mosquitoes and ants everywhere. We did not try the pool or the pancake breakfast. And there were no tractor rides to be found, even though it's mentioned on their website. The main attraction here is the price and the location to amenities in Bangor. It is right next to the airport, so planes can be very loud, but that did not bother us much. It was fine for what it was/what we needed but we feel no need to ever go back.

Their venue is closer to Bangor than some of the other outfitters that do this, however, the ride to get to the pond is at least an hour. You ride in a van and some of the roads are bumpy. The guide narrates a little, but I feel he could have done more. The home base is nice and they sell souvenirs, coffee, and snacks. They have a bathroom building with changing areas. There was lots of water on the ground there, so I wonder why it wasn't moped. Once you get into the van, there is no bathroom area (unless there is a porta potty that I missed. The scenery by the water was very beautiful and peaceful and even though no moose were spotted, it was still a very nice experience. The price was fair and there was always someone that answered the phone when we called to ask questions. Overall a great experience.

Our guide Zack did a great job of chatting and sharing nature facts while we rode. Worth noting is that the second half hour of the ride is pretty bumpy on a dirt road. Also, if you go during black fly season you might want to consider a face net. They weren't too bad on the pond, but they tend to fly directly towards your eyes and nose, and the net keeps them off. Once we got to the water we suited up with life jackets and Zack helped us into the canoes. We paddled for around an hour and ended up seeing 3 different moose on the water plus another 2 on the ride home! We were able to float for around 30 minutes in the canoe, just observing the moose eating. It was a bit of a trek to get here from Bar Harbor but totally worth it!
