Don't waste your hard earned money at this dump. The only thing worse than the food is the Assistant Manager Mauricio. We had our Mother's Day lunch here at my wife's request. They were busy and it took quite a while to get our food and drinks, but we understood. After leaving the restaurant within an hour my wife was extremely ill and curled up on the bathroom floor. I called the restaurant to speak with a manager and I was told that he was on a conference call and would call me back. After two hours I decided to call back and he answered the phone. He said "yeah I got your message but I wasn't going to call you back, I am too busy to deal with something like this." After a few choice words on my end I hung up after he knew how I felt. I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars versus 4 stars. I went there the other day because I heard that they stepped up game. I have the feeling the restaurant was having an off day. When my guest and I sat down it took a awhile for the server to come over and bring us chips. We waited 10 minutes after we got sorted before anyone came over to us. There's a lot of bad reviews on here but honestly, I cannot complain at all about any experience I've had when dining here. I ordered a mandarin Jarrito (Mexican orange soda), the Tacos con Carne Asada which came with rice and beans, and requested an additional side salad. Service was very quick, our server was very kind and funny, and our group were well looked after. I have to admit, the sauce that came with the tacos was quite spicy, I didn't expect it. We had a pretty disappointing meal this evening at Plaza Azteca starting with a dirty table which we had to tell them about. My wife ordered the Enchiladas Rancheros which was absolutely covered with green peppers that unfortunately she doesn't like. I got the Enchiladas Supreme which came out lukewarm so I returned them. They came out second time a few degrees warmer but still nothing near hot. One mistake I made was assuming that since all of the other enchilada dishes came with rice and beans that the Enchiladas "Supreme" would too. Not correct. They came out by themselves. The waiter was gracious and provided me with sides at no charge which was probably the only positive of the whole meal. I've eaten here once and thought it was very good. This last time I saw something I couldn't believe in a burrito. A bone fell out midway as I was cutting into it. I showed the waiter to surprise as well. He showed it to the manager and apologized. He said it looks like bone from a small steak. I got half off the price of the burrito. Good Food, Great Service Stopped in last Tuesday and found the restaurant approximately 75% full. We were greeted by our server Mia quickly and this started one of the best restaurant experiences we've had in years. To put things in perspective, I've had decades in food service, from serving through being a GM, so I recognize good service when I see it. Mia worked the floor and her section flawlessly. But that's where the good part ends. The food sucked. We ordered the fajitas for two. It comes out on this little tray sizzling and you can make your own burritos. The meat, the onions and the peppers were burns. Like black sides and tasted like the bottom of the oven. The salsa they had was seasoned tomato sauce. I mean it tasted/felt like someone had opened a can of Hunts tomato sauce (or ketchup) added some sofrito and adobo and left it alone. I will usually drowns my food in salsa and leave with a smile. This is my go to place for Mexican in the York County area. The food is absolutely delicious and margaritas too. We usually split the Fajitas as the portion sizes is enough for two and some leftover. I will say that this place is more on the expensive side. For the Fajitas it was $21 and whatever Margarita they brought me was $16 (it was a jumbo) but for the occasional date night its ok. Last tip, the parking lot is smaller so arrive early and not during prime dinner rush. read more

We came in with a large party of twelve at 4pm on a Saturday. I passed a lot of Mexican restaurants on the way to this one to attend a birthday party. The side order of guacamole was good and some people in our party had the chorizo and cheese dip and it was very tasty. I forget how good chorizo is. I ordered the steak fajitas and asked that the veggies be blackened a bit. The couple sitting across from me got the fajitas for two. My fajitas came out and were not blackened. I was too hungry to wait for them to come back again. I didn't get many refried beans but I didn't mind as they were watery and not that good. Great Cinco de Mayo celebration! They had cotton candy, face painting, balloon animals and mechanical bull riding for the kids. All for free, which was a nice perk during a rainy day!! We started with strawberry frozen margaritas, jumbo sized for me! We also got the OMG nachos and table side guacamole. Both were pretty yummy. The OMG nachos were kind of hard to eat after they sat for a bit and the tortilla chip got a little soggy. My niece had the kids meal pizza, which was pretty standard. My sister had the chicken and cheese quesadilla, which was just that: chicken and cheese in a shell. I had the Aztec tortilla soup. The appetizers were definitely better than the meals. Overall, we had a good experience. The restaurant was packed by the time we got there but service was quick. The place looks nice and there's plenty of seating. It's probably the best Mexican place in the Yorktown area, but there's just no "wow" factor here for me that would make me become a regular. I came here with a fairly large group to celebrate the birthdays of a couple of coworkers and the space and service made it appropriate for the occasion. There's a lot of seating, a fairly large bar area and overall modern/fun atmosphere. I had one of the combination dinners (all combos are $9.99). It included a burrito, taco and chili relleno. It was good, though it would have been nice to have it served with rice and beans considering the price. I mostly chose this combo for the chili relleno, which was pretty standard. The menu is fairly extensive and offers some nontraditional Mexican dishes (aka Americanized fluff). I had a jumbo margarita on the rocks ($7.99), which was pretty stiff. I was expecting a better HH price though. The service was quick. We were happy to have a Spanish speaker in our party because our server was not totally fluent in English and needed some help when divvying the bill. read more

Took my daughter to Plaza Azteca across the street from Grafton High School tonight. Service was good and my daughter's steak fajitas were fine, but the chile rellenos I was served were by far the worst Mexican food, or just food for that matter, I've ever had placed in front of me. OK, so maybe the bad steamed clams I had back in '85 that kept me in the bathroom for the better part of a week were technically worse, but at least I could actually get them down....at least for a couple of hours, anyway. As chile rellenos were not on the menu (which surprised me being fairly common Mexican fare), I asked the server if they had any. He said yes, so I ordered a platter with two chile rellenos, rice and refried beans. The rice and beans ended up being my dinner as the chile rellenos were completely inedible. I, an adult male weighing 200ish, could not even cut through one of them with a knife...literally, I could not cut through it...it wouldn't even tear when I leaned into it! I even demonstrated the chile rellenos' krytonite-like indestructiveness to the server when he came back to the table to check up on us, telling him they needed to stop serving them if there were anymore in the kitchen. He asked me if I wanted something else, but I know better than to send anything back to the kitchen (in general, not specifically at this restaurant) and eat anything that re-emerges, so I politely declined. So a nice meal out with my daughter turned out to be a complete disappointment food-wise...and $45 for two after the server took off $12...meaning the rice and refried beans only cost $5. Guess if I try to look at it positively, I saved money as the rice and beans would probably have cost more if I ordered them a la carte...so there's always that. We used to go to Plaza Azteca quite often a few years back when my kids were at Grafton. Never had an issue, but looks like things have slipped a bit...and by "a bit" I mean "a lot". I'd recommend instead going to 3 Amigos which is just another mile or so up the street near Ft Eustis Blvd. I've eaten there twice fairly recently and the service and food were just fine, so guess that, or Cinco De Mayo which is also close by, will be my next go-to when I have a desire for at least palatable Mexican cuisine. Last negative review I wrote was almost 6-years ago. Since I eat out once or twice a week and only take the time to write a review when something is just plain horrible, you might want to think twice before going to Plaza Azteca, this one at least. This place was recommended by our neighbors. Monday nights are typically "kid's night" with face painting and balloons! Unfortunately the usual lady was ill during our visit, but we still enjoyed ourselves. Upon our arrival we were quickly seated. With four adults and four children, we fit comfortably at a long bench table and a high chair at the end. We were immediately served chips with salsa and a white sauce - the sauce had a kick to it which accommodated for the texture. Our order was promptly taken and soon enough our food arrived. Everything was delicious. Our friends ordered the shrimp queso, while their kids picked corn dogs and rice. My husband selected the chicken chimichanga plate with fried tortillas, rice and beans. I ordered the chicken and spinach enchiladas with rice and beans. The portions were great and we all left feeling full. Having moved from Arizona, we've been in search of a great Mexican restaurant. My husband and I just moved from Arizona to Virginia and have found it extremely challenging to find a good Mexican food spot close to home. Plaza Azteca is about as close to authentic Mexican food as you will get in Yorktown. Staff is so friendly and our food was out quickly. Everyone is efficient and attentive. We went for lunch and I got the beef quesadilla and taco plate. The only unfortunate side to my visit was that the quesadilla wasn't really a quesadilla at all. More like a giant beef taco. If they added more ingredients it may have been a bit more to my liking, rather than just s giant tortilla with beef stuffed inside. However going to another plaza azteca this franchise is based upon crappy service, crappy food, and even worse managerial staff. it must be somewhere in the contract for their job to give the worst service in all. the only thing that was a redeeming quality was our server. She was very nice, very pleasant, and really took the time to make sure that we were happy. Although there's nothing she could do about our experience, it is not the servers fault for a crap product presented to us by the kitchens. One strike is shame on me. Two strikes is shame on you.
