So today I ventured out to Plaza Azteca and took a look at the menu to find that they have changed. With that I ordered my usual "Plaza Del Mar"!!! So no scallops or seafood Alfredo sauce OK I can handle that. Now let's get real. The new lobster bisque came to me on the plate ICE COLD!!!! The Mahi Mahi was more than we'll done. It was cooked thru but pressed flat and had a texture of more than a brick than a piece of fish. Lastly service was slow very slow. I'll be looking for a New Mexican Restaurant! The service is slow, their food is mediocre but their margaritas are wonderful! We dined here for lunch last Saturday and it took over an hour to get our food. The food wasn't very warm and my tacos were soggy. We had to wait a long time to get our check after we politely asked for it. It was a beautiful day and it appeared that they were short-staffed. Terrible service, mediocre food. Our waiter literally forgot that we were there. I had to go find someone to bring our food out. Then, again, I had to go find the manager to get our check. I get that they were a little busy, but that is totally unacceptable. Considering the price and how bland and boring our dishes were, I'm not likely to be back here. There are far better Mexican options within a short distance. Try El Cerro Azul or Tres Machos for a superior experience all around. I don't recommend Plaza Azteca. read more

The complimentary nacho chips were under seasoned and not warm at all. It came with a salsa that lacked any significant flavor which matched the much to be desired service from our server. Ordered the arroz con pollo which had no flavor as well that was drowned in a watery queso sauce. The only plus is that the restaurant is near the movie theater, but there is soooo much to be desired. You're better off getting anything else like five guys for the price. read more

Loved everything about this place! We got there around 5:30 on a Saturday night. Surprisingly we were seated right away. The booth was nice and roomy as was the whole restaurant. Our waiter was very pleasant. We took a few minutes to read over the menu. I decided on a combo. It consisted of a taco, enchilada, chile relleno, and rice. It came out super fast! The portions are huge!! Everything was delicious. Even after I was full I kept eating because it was that good! I also ordered a margarita. It definitely hit the spot. My meal was good with the exception of the dessert of Fried Ice Cream.The chimicangas were freshly made with moist and tender chicken. The rice and beans were flavorful. But when they brought out the fried ice I could see from across the room that there was a problem. The dessert looked like a coconut, yes it was THAT brown. The coating was an overcooked dough that pulled away from a melting ice cream ball. My advise is you might really enjoy the overpriced entre but leave the desserts alone. read more

When we asked for another table, they said nothing was available. And, to the right of the hostess stand there was an empty table. Was forced to order a coke because the sweet tea tasted like water. Was then charged for coke. I then ordered carne asada, medium rare. There was more fat than meat on the plate that arrived from the kitchen. I could pull the steak apart with ease; it was essentially pasty meat mush. Having lived on the Mexican border for about four years, I do not expect great authentic Mexican food in Virginia. However, the absolutely insane amount of people trying to get into this place on weekends would prompt one to think that it's exceptional, whether or not it's authentic. Sadly this is not the case at Plaza Azteca. First I'll address the service, which was actually quite exceptional for the aforementioned insane amount of people crammed in the restaurant. Our waitress was very attentive despite the fact she had lots of tables and had to dodge people literally waiting in the open space throughout the restaurant. My first complaint is the wait. If I'm going to Mamma Zu on a Friday night (or almost any night for that matter) I expect to wait for at least 45 minutes to get a table. In that case the juice is worth the squeeze as they say. Perhaps the worst part about this wait isn't the time at all, but the fact it's literally standing room only and you are crammed in among probably fifteen families with three to six children each. It's like the waiting room to hell. I really don't mind kids, would love to have some of my own someday, but this is truly intolerable. The last thing I want while waiting for this food is to feel like I'm stuck in a crowded elementary school. On to the food. We are finally seated and promptly served chips and salsa. My immediate reaction upon tasting the salsa is that while it does have some flavor, it's severely lacking any sort of heat and appropriate spicing. It's like they just took tomatoes and onions and threw them in a blender with some salt. I understand lots of people don't like really hot foods, but come on man, throw in one jalapeño and some cilantro for the effort and you'll have a much better product. Good salsa is the standard essence of authentic Mexican. It's spicy and flavorful and even if it's too hot for your personal taste, you keep eating it because it just tastes so good. We ordered some "made at the table" guacamole, and then cancelled our order upon realizing it was eight dollars. Eight bucks for guacamole??? Where are we, in Moscow, thousands of miles and an ocean from the nearest avocado tree?? The absurd price is not worth even the best guacamole on Earth. We witnessed the dude making the guacamole for a neighboring table. Three avocados, a little cilantro and some onions - and this costs eight dollars? Just to watch a man mash it up in front of you. Again it's absurd. Again throw a jalapeño in there and I might be tempted to spend that much, but it's still very unlikely. I was looking for carnitas or tacos de pastor. You know just some savory morsels of the most amazing animal on the face of the earth. Sadly no such thing exists on the menu, or if it does it's so bastardized I couldn't find it. All I want is slow cooked pig, some onions and cilantro, a roasted jalapeño, and some corn tortillas. How hard is that?? After getting over my frustration at this, I ordered the shrimp tacos. Basically lightly seasoned shrimp sautéed with onions and peppers and topped with some melted queso blanco in a flour tortilla. It's served with some tasty mango salsa - the best thing I had all night. Basically everything on the menu is gussied up with over presentation for what it is, extremely Americanized Mexican fare. Perhaps I'm odd but I don't give a crap what my Mexican food looks like - some of the best moles I've had over the years looked literally like crap. I'm positive the staff is cooking some amazing authentic food in the back for themselves, but sadly their management is content to serve patrons the aforementioned Americanized garbage. Lastly I think the thought of appearances sums this place up. It's stuck in the middle of the suburban wasteland, it's clean and their food is presented well. The staff are all wearing uniforms and present themselves well. It is absolutely mobbed with people. All of this adds up to the makings of an amazing restaurant, but it's not what it seems but rather a facade. read more

This was not the first time we had been there, but it will probably be the last. We (a party of 18 who had made reservations two weeks ahead and confirmed them each of the 3 days prior as well as 4 hours prior to arriving) arrived at 6:50 PM to find our table ready, and that the rest of the restaurant was not crowded by any means. We were seated and then waited until 7:05 PM for someone to come and start taking drink orders, which did not arrive until 10 minutes later. It was 7:30 PM before our waiter (also an assistant manager) showed up to take our food orders, which had not arrived by 8:00 PM when I had to go looking for the manager to find out what the problem was. In the meantime, the guy with the tableside guacamole cart pretty much saved the night, as far as it could be saved, by showing up within 5 minutes of our sitting down. At least we did not starve while waiting to have our orders taken and then have tyhe food served. At 8:15 PM our waiter and 3 helpers arrived with trays of food and proceeded to auction it off - "Who got the __", "Who has the __". Seriously, a little bit of organization and note-taking ought to help the waiter remember who ordered what - especially since they started at "Point A" and went around the table writing down the orders. It was at least another 15 minutes before someone came around asking some of us if we wanted drink refills. Others had to try and catch the guy as he scampered by to ask for a drink refill. To his credit, small as it may be, he did come around once more to check on refill requests. Once the food arrived we all agreed it was good. Not great, but well up on the "Good" scale. At 9:15 PM we had to go find the manager again to inquire if someone could bring our checks. That's when I also asked the manager to consider some adjustment to the bill for the poor quality of service - actually lack of service - we had received. What we got was basically less than $2.00 per person off individual bills that averaged $25.00. 8%. We were not looking for 50%, but 8%, as opposed to a round 10%, seemed a little bit skimpy. When the group ate there before the tips averaged almost 50% (we do tip wherever we go when we get good service for such a large group), and that fact was recalled when we made the reservations, as they asked if we were the group they remembered from our previous visit. I can't speak for everyone in the group, but I will surely not vote to return. read more

Plaza is a pretty solid Mexican spot, very close to the Regal. The portions are plentiful, and the wait staff is friendly. This location had a fairly large restaurant space, making it a great place for a bigger group or party. I enjoyed the fajitas for two; the skillet came packed with different sizzling meats. I was not a huge fan of the red salsa that came with the chips. I did notice many groups were enjoying the guacamole, that will be a pick for next time. read more

I did not like this place at first but I have found something I like here now. It is called The Burrito San Jose. It is filled with grilled chicken, chorizo sausage and beans and topped with a cheese sauce. It is yummy and I always take home at least half of it. I also like their salsa. The tortilla chips are too salty however. The fresh made guacamole is good too but I don't like the traveling cart really. I would prefer they make it in the back and bring it out but that is ok. not a biggeee. I would give more stars if it weren't for the many not so memorable dishes I have had here. Anything seafood - skip it - It is not fresh in the least. I have friends and family who love this place so had to find something I liked and I did finally do that. The margarita I had was also just average. Mix all the way. I prefer Don Pepes but this place is good enough and the service is very good. read more

The food was very good except for the guacamole that was prepared at our table which was dull and not as tasty as we have experienced at other Mexican restaurants in the area. I probably would have given 4 or 5 stars but our waiter was horrible (the restaurant was not crowded at the time). He took our order and we never saw him again until he brought the check. We had to find other waiters or staff to get drink refills etc. On the bright side, the atmosphere is very nice, clean and modern and the food was excellent with the exception that I mentioned earlier. I could eat Mexican food every day of the week....especially if it's from this place. The staff are VERY friendly and they remember you if you go often enough! The margaritas are strong but the best. If you like guacamole you have to try their tableside guac which is made to order. Their salsa is best I've ever had...fresh and not too spicy. The steak fajitas are REAL steak, not beef. Everything is really fresh here. They get really busy Friday & Saturday nights, but it's very easy to get in for lunch or on any other night (or later in the evening on the weekends). I think the mixed drinks are a little pricy, but well worth it. read more

This was my first visit. I was significantly disappointed. Will never return. Food (chicken) was undercooked (pink). The waitress said that she would return it and have the kitchen make me another one. I was shocked minutes later, when she returned to say that the manager said that she could not resubmit it. I had to accept what I got. The waitress apologized up and down and I do not have any problem with her or her service. But, they lost a customer. The others at my table also expressed their dissatisfaction. The bills were all wrong. My friend who does not drink, was charged with 2 margaritas that apparently had been put on his bill incorrectly by another server. I don't know how that happens. The manager was no where to be found to make a correction to the bill. This place lost at least 5 customers, not to mention the bad reports that we will tell everyone that we know. read more

Typical Mexican food. Nothing special at all. Our server was awful. Took 10 minutes for him to come back to take our order after watching him take other orders from people who arrived after us. This was my second time there and I would never go back. The food alone is not worth it but the terrible service just made it way worse. I went today for the first time - Saturday lunch. The restaurant was not busy, but they still put us in the booth next to the doorway to the kitchen and the hostess stand, not a good table, with others available. The whole time the hostess was right over my shoulder, and at least 3 bussers and the guacamole chef were right over my mother's shoulder. It was BY FAR the most awkward restaurant I'd ever been in. Way too many staff standing around looking at you. Our food tasted pretty good, the overpriced margaritas were weak, so weak I'm not sure they weren't just the mix. Most stomachs hurt after leaving though. Our server was just as awkward, taking multiple trips to get things right, not asking the right questions - when the menu item gives you a choice he seemed put off that I was telling him which of the options I wanted. He tried to pull plates too early, giving us the feeling he was in a rush to get us out, handed us the check and waited for us to decide how we wanted to pay instead of coming back, and then stayed at the table while we wrote in the tip. After getting the tip he tried to make small talk - and then told us not to drink and drive, even though he had served every person at the table a margarita. He was a nice guy, just awkward. I won't be back, there are many other cheaper restaurants that have better food and a less stressful experience. read more

We stopped here on Black Friday for lunch at approximately 1pm. There weren't too many peoples here and plenty of waitstaff. The staff was friendly but the service was the worst!! We were a small group (4) and were seated right away, received our drinks quickly and the chips were tasty. Salsa was mediocre and white sauce (the teens like this stuff - in other places) was the worst ever. We were feeling thankful we got there before a mob of big groups came in but, on the contrary, we were not. Two large groups and another group our size received there meals. We asked about ours and were told it was coming. 15 more minutes we asked again. He comes back with "oh it looks like the order was passed over accidentally" and he asks us again what we ordered. We say we want it to go. This took quite a while and we were debating tossing a few bucks on the table and walking out when he appears with the bags of food. You would think that they would comp the meal or discount it as it was 1:50pm now. Yes. You read this right. It never takes a Mexican restaurant 50 minutes to make three quesadillas and a fajita lunch. Never to see me again. There's the whole story. There are far better places to eat in the area especially Mexican. read more

This was our first time here. We are usually pretty loyal Mexico restaurant people....so it was a roll of the dice for us...especially with many kids in tow. I thought the food was delicious! I ordered tacos de pollo, three tacos lined up with huge slices of avocado on top and fresh tomatoes and onion. They were perfect! I was really surprised by the freshness. The side of rice and beans was good. Chips were plentiful, the salsa was good... but i like Mexico's better...The kids were happy, the servers were fast and helpful. I've been here before, and I like the food. The guacamole is awesome. Today was my birthday and my friends took me out to lunch. The servers ambushed me with a silly sombrero and sang a weird little song, which is worth it for the flan (yum!) that came with it. Embarrassing, but still okay. Then, at the end of the song, one of the servers grabbed the spoon, loaded it with whipped cream, and smeared it on my face. What the heck? Some of the raspberry drizzle got on my white shirt. Some of the cream got in my nose. I tried to be a good sport, but I was not happy. My advice? Never come here on your birthday. read more
