The one thing you'd never expect to see when walking into a Mexican restaurant is a karaoke area. Yes, you know, where you stand up to sing to a bunch of your fellow drunkies to songs long since forgotten... I went on a Saturday night and it seemed a lot busier than what I expected it to be. I'm told that many of the people there are regulars. Food was decent in my opinion. I ordered steak tacos which didn't come with anything other than pico... no cheese no sour cream... how do you call yourself a mexican or texmex without those essentials? I think this can be a fun place to go with friends, but I won't be a regular by myself. I can get better, tastier and cheaper food from elsewhere. read more

We used to go to this restaurant almost weekly and then the food started going downhill so we stopped going in. We've recently started going back and the food seems to be better and the drinks are almost always great! Our issue is the person cleaning up. She picked up the floor mats and then proceeded to go about her business behind the bar without washing her hands. She also did other various nightly tasks of picking up other 'things' and never washed her hands once. This IS disgusting...PLEASE...when handling food, wash your hands after you have picked up things off the floor and other places. It is extremely unsanitary and while we might be back, I'm hoping this issue is resolved by the next time we come. I'm not sure I'll order from this person again. If she is behind the bar, we'll wait till someone else can help us or just not order food. Disgusting! read more

Service wasn't bad for a Friday night but my chicken tasted old and my fiance's steak was uneatable. I for one, am sure glad there are more Mexican restaurants in Great Bridge to choose from because this place has gone down hill. read more

Margaritas were not good at all. Watered down. Chips and salsa. Just so-so. Had a tostada. The others had s burrito and enchiladas. Pretty bland. Not terrible. Not great. read more

This place is always hopping. It is a true locals hang-out. Between the Margaritas, Guacamole (made fresh at your table) and Karaoke its a good time. The food is great. Just the right amount of Mexican heat with all the flavor. The service is fast even when the place is packed. We go there couple time a month and always run in to folks we know. Love their red sauce and always recommend the Plaza Del Mar (broiled Shrimp and Scallops in a cream sauce over grilled Tilapia) and the Tacos de Carne Asada. read more

I guess when the competition goes out of business that gives you opportunity to start producing substandard service. The lack of customer acknowledgement was so poor the hostess never looked up from the table she was gossiping with. A server sat us and then no other person arrived. We will not be gracing any of their restaurant doors in the near future. read more

This particular Plaza location is much closer than the Holland location, but the food is still very good! I came here for a baby shower, and we had a long table set aside for us. I loved that there were chips every 3-4 people because I love the white dip! Even though we had a large party, the food came out relatively quickly. I ordered the chicken and spinach enchiladas, which is my favorite Plaza dish! I like this location because it isn't as busy as the other locations. It's more of a hidden gem in the Chesapeake area. read more

Until now, I have never had the police called on me for telling the manager the food was disgusting. Buyer beware. If you don't enjoy your meal, you may want to keep your mouth shut. Otherwise, you will get what I got ronight. Embarrassing for all parties involved. Especially my brothers in the Chesapeake Police Department. So sorry you were manipulated tonight. read more

I had the Burrito Mex and was only able to eat half of it. This was upsetting because it was soooooo good! :) My husband had the Burrito San Jose and was so stuffed he went straight to sleep when we got home! Our waiter was also awesome. He would bring us things just as I was about to ask for them-creepy right? No, he was GREAT! Only downfall was the wait for a group of 4 adults and 4 children. We saw people come in after us, wait for a table, go eat and leave while we waited to be seated. If they had more room for large parties I would def give them 5 stars! read more

This Plaza is my husband and I favorite Plaza in Hampton roads. The service is amazing, we are locals so we have started to get to know the servers. The bar is always packed on Wednesday because it's full of chesapeake's best karaoke singers. The seafood chimminagos are to die for.. worth the price because it's packed with crab & shrimp. read more

haven't been back to VA for years now, but I still wake up in the middle of the night CRAVING Plaza Azteca. I celebrated birthdays, graduations, relationships and breakups at the various locations throughout the 757. This one was closest to home so I came here the most. Fantastic food, incredible drinks, great quick service. Can't find a place that compares even in California or Texas, and I don't even mind the crazy looks when I tell people the best Mexican food I've ever had was in Virginia Beach. If you're close to one, take advantage. Hell if you're less than a day's drive away, I promise it's worth it. read more

The place has never failed us. I mean its "Plaza". Either you like it or you don't. We go to dine or we go to grab a margarita and some chips. We always have a good time when we go. Most recently we ventured out and tried the "OMG nachos" and they were delicious! I definitely recommend it! read more

Plaza Azteca is our favorite Mexican restaurant and default place when we can't agree to where we'd like to go. Service is always good and very fast. They have good chips and salsa, and their guacamole (made at your table) is terrific. They have a varied menu which changes often. If you don't see what you'd like or you don't see something you've seen on a previous visit, ask for it - they'll get it for you! The Burrito San Jose (chicken, chorizo, etc) is huge and my favorite, always a great leftover. The a la carte menu is extensive and easy to make a great meal from. Booths are wide and deep, lots of room, and they can quickly put together tables for a larger party. Weekends can be pretty crowded, since they're very close I've never checked to see if they take reservations. read more

1 star only because I can't go lower. Teenage son went here with friends. Waiter and son had a miscommunication issue over his order. When food came son told the waiter this is not what he thought he was ordering and asked to send it back. Waiter refuses and told him he had to pay for it whether he ate it or not. I had to call and speak with the manager to resolve this issue. Manager also tried to put the waiter on the phone and blow me off. After my phone call the waiter then had an extremely bad attitude with my son and his friends. Speaking extremely rude and derogatory. Before any of the above transpired, waiter had to be asked 4 times to bring a table of 6 more then 1 basket of chips. Bottom line: wait staff and management will try to take advantage and browbeat a 17 yo into paying for food he did not want. They have now lost my entire family's business. read more

We have always had great experiences at the Cedar Road (Chesapeake) Plaza. We have dined there frequently given their proximity to us and the good food and atmosphere, and have recently made Taco Tuesdays a standing weekly gathering with family and friends. However, tonight's experience left us quite shocked, as I imagine it may have also done to nearby patrons. Our party (3 of us) ordered our drinks and meals all at once - tacos from the Taco Tuesday special, a side of beans with each, and drinks (not water). Once we starting eating we all noticed the beans tasted funny - our groups members' descriptions ranged from fruity to sour to rancid. We told our server, and he apologized. We consumed everything else we ordered and made no other mention of the beans. When we received the bill, the beans were on there so we asked to have them removed. The manager came over and wouldn't take them off the bill because he said we ate half of the beans. After some discussion he ultimately said there are enough other patrons and he didn't care what I had to say. Walking away he stopped at another table and loudly asked if they liked the beans. Then he even more loudly stated (essentially shouted) how much they liked the beans. I'm utterly shocked the manager acted this way over a side of beans. Everyone in my group felt that the "funny taste" wasn't just a slight difference in preparation, unless a little extra E.coli was tossed in. We just could not have continued to eat them. Removing them from the bill would haveSoft Beef Tacos preserved their (that particular manager's) reputation and our trust in Plaza. We will not be back!! read more

Food has always been great. Fast service and usually friendly wait staff all though my daughter and I had a run in with a very, very rude waiter and we did not return for some time but since I've been back, I have not seen said waiter. Hopefully they fired him. read more

I came here last night with my Husband and daughter and everything was fine at first. Fajitas were good and the happy hour Margarita was suggested to me. I ordered and it was not good at all. I let my server know and as soon as I did he suggested to add Strawberry to it and I told him I did not want a Strawberry margarita. He then rudely took my drink and brought me a water without saying anything or even asking me what else I wanted to drink and did not speak to us the rest of the night. I have never been treated like that by a server before. Very disappointed. read more

We have been customers for 10 years. It is our go to place, the staff always remembers us and treat us like family. By far the best Plaza in Hampton Roads. The food is always spot on, and the cheese sauce is addicting read more

This is a solid Mexican restaurant that has been a Chesapeake mainstay for many years. Their food is a small step above average. They, however, have jacked up their prices multiple times in the past two years, and the food is now priced WELL above its quality. I enjoy a big burrito, but don't care to pay $15 for one, nor is a $9 side of guacamole worth it. read more

Ordered the Ceviche appetizer as my meal and it was the BEST civiche I've ever had. Note: Its very hard to have an intimate conversation with a friend in this resturant as there are very loud rednecks singing drunken kareoki on Wednesday nights. read more

The one great thing about Plaza Azteca's is they are consistent. The decor is nice, never a issue with service the 757 sauce (white sauce) tasty and the food is decent quaint American style Mexican. They are usually solid for lunch and this one was no different. read more

A local favorite. The locals like to come out here and pretend they like ethnic food quite often. Of course I am kidding (kinda). The selection is what you can expect of any Mexican restaurant in the area--but the service and the quality is top notch. Aaaaand another Mexican restaurant. The service depends on how crowded the place is. It's often crowded, so it's often slow. Sometimes it's a pain to get the waiter. One time their credit card machine was broken! I guess this is average by Hampton Roads standards, but I'm still giving it a two. read more

Plaza Azteca is the place to go. You ask, "where do you want to eat?" The answer is always the same. The menu is plentiful, the service is always good if not great, and the prices are very reasonable. Can't tell you how many times we've been there, but it will be missed as I leave Chesapeake. read more

Love the white sauce that comes out with the salsa. The salsa cups are a little on the small side, especially for those that love salsa. The food was good. The staff ran around with a sense of urgency. Took a little while to get the check. Would go back. We're new to the area and still exploring. read more

I always enjoyed Plaza Azteca restaurants in Virginia Beach. I moved out to Chesapeake and went to the one in Cedar Road for the very first time this pasted Sunday with my family. The place look very nice however the food and service is no up to par. The Chips they served me is all crumbs like they scooped up from the bottom of the bucket. The food is not as good as the one in Haygood, Constitution Drive and Holland Road. I don't think I will visit this store ever again. Virginia Beach is much Better. read more

I have been to a few other Plaza Aztecas, my biggest complaint about this one is how the service varies, last time I was at this location I was served and had exactly what I wanted within minutes, but this time I sat down and for 30 minutes we weren't served completely ignored, but once our waiter arrived he was quick with our orders and on top of it. The food is nothing to brag about, it is average Americanized Mexican food. I come back because my friend loves it, but I'm not quite sold its better than somewhere else. read more

If I could give this zero stars I would. The service was okay however the manager and assistant manager are very rude ! I was charged for something I didn't order. Also there was a hair in my food and the waiter accused me of putting my own hair in my food. Also asked for a regular sized margarita I got a jumbo and when I notified the waiter he said that was his mistake and we would only be charged for the regular. Of course we got the check and they definitely tried to charge for the jumbo. I notified the manager who seemed like they could care less. And then made a very snarky comment as the manager walked away. We were going to pay with card but I wasn't paying for anything I didn't not receive and or not suppose to receive so I paid in cash what my total SHOULDVE been and left. Hopefully they will learn this lesson. Long story short I will NEVER come to this establishment again. read more

My wife and I just moved to town and our friend, who lives just down the road, took us to Plaza Azteca. The wife and I both had the soft beef tacos, which were good. Seating was quick, but the service was a little slow. The salsa didn't seem to have much flavor, but it comes free to every table, making it hard to complain. We would go back if in the area and in the mood for Tex-Mex, but I wouldn't drive across town. read more

Had dinner there last night. The service was good, but the salsa was not fresh, they used tomato sauce. The food was so commercialized and was very bland. I travel all over the world and being Texican, I have to try mexican restaurants and rate them. My good friend recommended this place but I have to disagree with him, if you want American Mexican food, there are better places in the Tide Water area. Note: the price for the table side guacamole is way over priced. read more

Date of Visit: 8.8.18, around 5 PM Location: In a shopping plaza, plenty of parking Vegetarian Options: Oddly, they do not offer a basic bean and rice burrito. I didn't feel like negotiating one or having to pay for a full priced meat based one. I'm sure it could have been managed, but I decided to try one of their listed vegetarian dishes. I opted for the Durango. It...well...um...blergh. It's a mashed potato "burrito," mushroom quesadilla, and a cheese enchilada. It's a plate o' cheese smothered in a cheese sauce that I am pretty sure uses the same cheese sauce on the items. It was rough. I asked for an enchilada sauce on it and requested lettuce and pico on the side. There is no garnish, no options, no beans and rice side that comes with it, nothing to (pardon the pun) cut the cheese. It should come with a drizzle of cheese sauce, not a ladle. They are a little too generous with the sauce to the point it becomes gross. Even my meat-eating husband, referred to as Dumpster Daddy by our child, found it off putting. The mushroom quesadilla had a nice grilled flavor, but again, I think that cheese sauce may be on it too... The entire meal was all like eating a bowl of cheese sauce soup with no other flavor. Service: Quick, friendly, and efficient. She didn't forget anything, checked up on us, didn't try to entertain us, quickly brought us our check and boxes. She did her job just as I would have done back when and I was happy with her for it. Meh: The servers leaned against a wall right behind us observing their tables. It's weird having people just standing behind you while you eat. I would suggest that is not the place to have them watching their tables. read more

2 Chances and still couldn't get it right! I ordered from Plaza Azteca on Cedar Rd twice in a days and both times they got it wrong, way wrong. First order: My shrimp quesadilla was a dry tortilla with a few grilled shrimp in it. That's it. No cheese (rule number 1 for a quesadilla, right?), no beans, no onions and peppers, absolutely nothing like the description on the menu. It was utterly ridiculous, so much so that I had to laugh at it. My order was missing 2 orders of rice and beans and I had 2 random chicken tacos in my bag. Needless to say I was super disappointed, but had already driven 20 minutes home. I called to see if I could get a credit, but never got anyone on the phone. Order number 2: The La Flaka salad's description says it's on a bed of iceberg and romaine lettuce. Welp, I got home and it was on a spring mix salad. No biggie if you like soft salad. I don't! If I am having a salad, I want to bite into a snap and crisp. So, again, I was left disappointed. Called AGAIN, but this time I got to leave a message- to which no manager ever responded. So, it's a no for me from this point on. Mexican restaurants are on every corner, so with that level of competition, you would think each restaurant would fight for each customer! read more

The food is nearly always good. The white sauce for tortilla chips is excellent, as is the guacamole. Service is good.

I've been out of the area for quite a few years now, but Plaza has always held some special memories. Whenever I am back in town, a trip to Plaza for dinner is a must. With that being said, after my visit last night, I'm not 100% sure that is the case anymore. We arrived at 8:00pm, which is a later little later than the usual dinner rush. We were taken to a table, and then proceeded to wait almost 10 minutes before we had to flag someone down to get a server. No one even brought us chips or salsa during this time. The server brings our drinks, and chips, and salsa, and it looks like they gave us the bottom of the bag for chips. It was nothing but little, crumbled pieces. I noticed that since the last time I had been in, there was some menu changes. I just wanted something simple, so I ordered the steak fajitas. This entree used to come with rice, beans, lettuce, guac, pico, sour cream, and shredded cheese. They've now dropped the lettuce and guac. Additionally, they are now using a piece of leaf lettuce under neath the sour cream and pico to get the appearance of giving you more than they actually are. I ordered my entree without beans, but it came out with them. Lovely. Another diner with me ordered an additional side of shredded cheese, which the server also forgot to bring. After dropping off food, we didn't see the server again. We had been waiting for her to come back to receive boxes and our check for more than 10 minutes - again - when I made a comment that the hostess overheard. (I simply said something along the lines of "if we ever see our server again.") The hostess went and got our waitress, who needed to make three separate trips to our table to finally get us to the point of being able to pay. The hostess that overheard my comment a few minutes prior cashed us out. She apologized for the wait and made a comment about how they have been having problems with that server all night. Not necessarily the most professional, but she's young. I noticed that my entree was rang up at being $12.99. I went back and double checked the menu and it said that the cost was $11.99. I didn't ask about it, but instead paid and let the hostess know that their prices were wrong on the menu. TL;DR - Service was horrible, prices didn't match the menu, prices jumped since last visit - despite receiving less food. Unimpressed. read more
