The Good: Campsites along the river looked really nice. The Bad: We had a 3 day holiday weekend booked for tent camping.Unfortunately the weather did not hold up and our site was completely soaking wet - we could not even steak out our tent. The owner of the campground denied a refund due to policy. The amount of rules and regulations this camp ground has is absolutely absurd. The Ugly: When checking into our site, the woman working the desk was efficient but things took a bad turn really quick. 1. If you book on the Playful Goose website you will get charged a % service fee, which The Playful Goose Staff does not stand behind. 2. If you book on the Playful Goose website you must specify how many nights, adults and tents per site. Without too many logistics, we ended up paying over $220 for a weekend JUST TO CAMP IN HORICON. While trying to set up camp in the rain, a male (we were told he was the assistant manager) in a golf cart drove near our site yelling vulgar language, accusing our group of doing things to the grass (when the grass was a swamp to begin with due to weather) and lastly, as the man was driving away he continued to make harassing comments. The lack of professionalism, courtesy and respect from staff was unacceptable as a paying guest. Playful Goose Takeaway: I will never spend my hard earned money here. Again. And be sure to tell everyone I know to not spend their hard earned money here either. There are so many other beautiful camp grounds within a 100 mile radius and this one will be my last choice. This is one of Wisconsin's best kept secrets. I've been coming to this campground for the last 20 years. This is truly a family friendly campground. Just south of town, nestled between a cemetery and a golf course along the banks of the Rock River, is the Playful Goose Campground. The amenities include 165 acres of seasonal tent and RV sites as well as permanent parkland sites. The main building which is the office and serves as a bait and tackle shop also features an indoor swimming pool and a game room with pool tables and arcade machines. There is an on site laundry and coin operated showers. The grounds are fairly well kept. The gravel road that enters the campground can get a little rough, but I saw them grading it yesterday. There is a play ground for the kiddos and goats and chickens in a mini corral. I'm not sure if this is a petting zoo. You can bird watch along the banks of the river. Geese, heron, and egrets nest along the banks and are a regular sight. Fishing is good here also. I saw a man pull a northern pike out while I was grilling dinner. They have several boats and canoes for rent as well as golf carts to get around the campground with. What keeps this place from a 5 star rating is that like the owner, it's showing it's age. There was a mini golf course and shuffle board at one time. Both have not been kept up and are no longer functional. Every car this guy owned from 1955 is somewhere on the campground as well as a storage lot with old campers and RVs that are no longer useable. The bath/shower rooms are clean but not spotless. If you can overlook those eye sores you have truly discovered a hidden gem. They run a special, 7 days of camping and you get a free day. They also give you a $2.00 coupon for Leroy Meats (see the review) upon check in. If you're looking for a nice campground in the Midwest, this is about the best. read more

I usually book state park campsites and this was my first time booking a privately owned campsite. I'd call this campground "vintage " - as in hadn't been updated, or cleaned, since the early 80s - at best. While our campsite by the river was scenic it was overly priced ($27/night per tent) and the "amenities didn't real outweigh the cost. You pay extra for: wood (which you are required to buy onsite), showers (they cost quarters to run), kayaks/paddle boats, and more. I wouldn't call the place clean or well kept by any means (at least keep the mold and hair cleaned up in the ladies showers). Next time I'm sticking to state & national parks. read more

Playful Goose - Campgrounds Near Me - Horicon, Wisconsin

Do NOT recommend staying here. Wish they would have signage for trails and how to get to outhouses and and other locations on the campground. The outhouse was almost full when we arrived on Friday of Memorial Weekend, and heaping full by Sunday (to the point where your butt cheeks would touch or you for sure would get splash back urine and feces)! The showers were up by the main check in. (Only 2 and just 3 flushable toilets. The pool area is very dark and dreary, nothing like the video or pictures look like. You are required to buy their fire wood, which is no big deal except for the fact that the price is astronomical for what you get. You have to fill out a slip 10 minutes ahead of time and there are only 3 times during the day to get it (10,2&6) so don't be late. The garbage dumpster by the main office is heaping over and ripped open by vermin, so food and trash is everywhere. Last but not least, I staff was not the friendliest. Only good things I can say is our neighboring campers were very friendly and awesome to hang out with along with the scenery and birds and wildlife. read more

I absolutely Love the Playful Goose. We are tent campers and are always able to get a campsite right on the water. My daughter loves the pool, game room, and the ability to purchase ice cream at the camp store. I've always had a very good interactions with all staff. Main bathroom area was clean and the shower was great. I find their rates fair, and always look forward to the weekends we spend here. The views over the marsh are amazing! read more

Staff was unfriendly and not interested in helping us. We asked for rates and was told it was " in the brochure ". Rates were 27 without electric and 36 with electric for tents only . We were 4 soaking wet cyclists and only needed one spot to put out tents up but we're told that we'd have to pay for two sites unless we "camped in one tent" We left in the rain and went to the closest hotel (royal oaks motel )for just a few bucks more with great showers and very friendly service They even dried and folded out clothes read more

I'd heard about low voltage problems so brought testing equipment. Everything looked good first day - newer electrical outlet and power around 110 volts. Next day was very hot and about half attendance of the loop that we were on. The power was dropping down to 93 volts. Didn't want to damage the air conditioner so we shut it off, despite 90+ degree temperatures. Fridge would not run on AC and switched over to propane. Looks like sites 1 through 8 have new electric; I'd be curious to know if those sites have the low voltage problem as well. I did inform the owner that our site, #20A, had low voltage. Pricing was somewhat complicated; higher amp, additional people, visitors, extra vehicle, sewer, AC used, etc. was an added charged. Total charge was on the high end for a campground with similar amenities. There was no fire ring in the campsite and were told one would be delivered, but we hadn't received it as of the next morning. We ended up leaving early due to the heat and lack of AC, so we didn't pursue that. A 2'x2' box of wood was $14 and a 2'x4' was $24. $7 bucks to have it delivered. Very quiet campground, nice to walk around. Better mowing would help in how it looks. Tent area by river is very nice but could also use some cleaning up and mowing. Beautiful old trees, but a few should be taken down before they fall on something. The owners do appear to be trying to make improvements (new electrical in part of campground and rocks in parking area), so hopefully will continue to do so. read more

This was a great experience for our grandkids to camp out along the river We were surprised by the amount of room the site offered There were some drawbacks One was the amount of car traffic we had at night People starting their cars and sitting in them and keeping their lights on Then in the early AM the gunshots from duck hunters woke us over and over The pool was a hit for the kids It's indoor with a slide and heated. They need to light the pool area tho. And please clean your restrooms and showers They are beyond dirty and old The fire pits are scary for a number of reasons They are only sloped holes dug in the ground We were nervous the the grandkids would lean in their chairs and fall in They need above ground fire rings for sure The store is in need of organization as well They had a lot of supplies for repairs but not so much in the way groceries All in all we camped and had a lovely view but the experience could have been even better Not sure we'll return unless they update read more

I've been going here for the last few years on an annual camping trip. It's a pretty calm campground, and the folks that have permanent sites are always driving around in their golf carts, waving at you. It makes you feel like you're part of this exclusive, little community. There's an indoor pool, a nearby lake for some good fishing, and my friends like to golfing to the course a couple of miles down the road. It's really close to the town of Horicon so it's easy to get any supplies , like a steak from Leroy Meats or sweet corn from the stand by the BP station. I look forward to going to this camp site every year. read more

Came here as a guest for a birthday party. Several hours after arriving we (the entire group of guests) were screamed at by staff for not registering our vehicles at the front office. The registration process simply involved writing our names and plate numbers down at the front office and was a misunderstanding. Very unimpressed with the treatment of guests by staff, would never return. read more

The staff is unbearably hard to understand i had 2 people in front of me and it took 15 minutes to check into the campground cause everything was done by paper. If you have a nice camper this might be for you. If you have a pop up or tent this place is a nightmare. The walking paths through the forest are so overgrown we had to walk to someone's campsite just to get back to the camp road. The bathrooms are littered with June bugs spiders and wet floors. The camp sites are fought 12-15 paces apart (camper to camper) and cost 40$ a day for a pop up "34 on a non holiday weekend". I can honestly understand why on memorial weekend this place wasn't full but every other campsite was. The one good thing was people waived when they drove by other then that It was a bad stay. Would be better off staying at home or going to a hotel. The owner told me it's third generation owned and to be honest the last 2 owners haven't done a thing with the place. read more

This is a beautiful campground.quite, large sites,surounded by nature, along side river very pretty.that being said the big thing that is missing is owners that care about there buisness / are more people oriented.from what we see it once was a great campground big indoor pool.play area etc.but it has all been let go.this campground needs owners that will put in some time and money into sprucing it up.much of it could be done with fresh paint &cleaning & small investments like new tables & chairs in pool.a more kid friendly play area etc.Its too bad because a little love & elbow grease could rebuild this otherwise beautiful campground.not our worst stay at a campground but we know there are better.for that reason this will be our first and last stay here untill it is taken over by someone that cares.but if you just want a quite nature place to stay then give it a whirl.juzt dont expect much in customer service.in that department it is bare bones. read more

We had to pay for three sites even though we fit on one. Was expected to put our campers in a specific spot and park in another. So many rules for little things. Spiders as big as your thumb guarding the main bathrooms atached to the front office and pool. The pool could use some cleaning was floaters in there but smelled like chlorine so made me feel a little better. Was very hard to understand lady in charge of sites we just went along with what we thought she was saying. Fire pit is just a dug out hole in ground not safe for kids or dog leashes. Kids playground needs to be updated didnt even go up close because they looked unsafe from the office. We did get to see some deer farely close it was quiet other then the gulf carts all night Saturday night. And if you don't have a gulf cart your an outcast. Needs some TLC and updates but is a cool location. Not many lights either so was nice but scary read more
