But to me, the majority of the beach was the regular colour of the sand in Vieques, and the water seemed a little rougher than along other parts of the island. What was beautiful was having a wild horse walk up to me to say hello when I first got to the beach! That was definitely the perk of my visit!

Once you arrive at the "Playa Negra" sign, there is a short hike through a swampy region to get to the actual beach. The entire beach is not covered with black sand, only portions of it - at least the day I visited. It was not crowded at all. It was very scenic and calm!

We weren't told until the very last minute that we were required to take our shoes off at the lagoon b4 we got off the bus. We had to walk across very rough, rocky ground into deep mud to get into the kayaks. I was very worried about getting my feet cut during that. Where you actual pick up the rental or take lessons is off Ave Ashford by where the lagoon is. I took the 4pm rental which meant I was able to paddle board and relax into the sunset. It was essentially on a beach in the middle of nowhere. Remember to keep all your valuables or leave them in your hotel and keep your car doors unlocked. Anyway, he taught us how to paddleboard. We caught on pretty quickly with his guidance. Then, we paddled around the mangroves and even got onto our bellies to go under some mangrove canopy. It was quite therapeutic. Rumi was very knowledgeable about the area and the island, since he grew up there. Later, we went toward the opening of the bay and stopped at a beach. We snorkled for a bit, which was so much fun. Rumi would show us interesting creatures. It was so much fun and I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting vieques. I would even do it again.

As it often happens in the Caribbean, the skies looked lovely and clear and off we went for a sail. The moment we anchored where we were to eat lunch with the crew it seemed like a hurricane came down on us. It was so ridiculous that we all just burst into laughter and jumped in the water to make jokes while the downpour went over us. All this to say that they just figured out a way to turn something which could have potentially been terrible into a funny adventure. We laughed so hard that our faces hurt when we came back to land. They were lovely, the food was amazing, and their attitudes awesome. I would highly recommend them for a nice morning sail, and if you have a good sense of humor, prepare to laugh HARD! We will definitely be calling on them for our next trip into Vieques.

Vieques is an amazing island with prime pristine beaches that were hidden away from tourism for…read moredecades by the US Navy and only now just opening up. The island is chain-free and has strongly resisted development by outside forces. People here still get around using wrangled horses and to get chinese food you have to ask someone to bring it over on the plane. With such underdevelopment your best bet for staying on this island paradise is a rental home - with most places going for quite high prices and for a week minimum. Goodnight Moon is the home I stayed in, although I should add that it was as an overnight guest and not as a paying client. Only a few minutes walk from the Malecon (the strip) in a lazy part of Esperanza, this house is a great place to be. It's spacious with huge bedrooms, A/C and a kitchen lounge with a ton of DVDs. The gem of this location is the patio/verandah at the front where you can chill out al-fresco in the wonderful warm air. It's a shame that the firm looking after the property don't allow you to stay just a night or two - but Vieques is worth more than just that. Do yourself a favor and get a group of your friends together and come for the week in paradise. Mention Yelp and you will probably get a discount too *wink*
