Red Beach

I spent my first day in Vieques at Blue Beach, but was just as impressed my second day at Red Beach. It was a bit crowded compared to Blue Beach, but just as beautiful and serene. The wild horses and native plants provide a full Vieques beach experience. The Caribbean waters are warm and clear. The white sand beach is pristine clean and perfect for relaxing the day away. If you're lucky, you might get a glimpse of an amazing sunset or rainbow after a nearby rain shower.

Paradise!!! This beach is perfect !!! beautiful! First if you are staying in the main island you will need to drive or take a taxi to Fajardo to take the ferry or if you wanna fly you can do it too. I would recommend taking the ferry , its cheaper. If you go in high season you would need to buy the tickets days before you are planning to go. Just ask in your hotel if they can get the tickets for you. For this beach you need to take everything!! there is not a store or anything nearby avaible for you to buy anything. You need to be prepared. When you get to the island take a taxi and tell him you wanna go to Red Beach or Playa Caracas. He is going to charge you 10 dollars for each person, this is including your ride back to the ferry. There is some areas of shade ! not a lot!!!! The water is clear ! the sand is soooo white ! you can do snorkeling !.. You would not find a lot of people in this beach and if you go during the week maybe you will see 5 or 6 people ! It's the perfect spot!!!

I love this beach. I came here 7 years ago as a child and this was the only beach I remembered. But when I came back this time it was even more beautiful then I remembered. Don't miss out on this very accessible and beautiful beach! I did some snorkeling and saw beautiful coral and reef fish with bright blue and yellow. Make sure you walk to the end and touch the cliffs and walk under them!

Post card perfect.

In A Nutshell: -Like almost every single beach on Vieques, Red Beach offers you seclusion w/ access to spectacular beaches. -There are a few gazebos available for you to set-up a picnic. -There is one bathroom (on the right by the entrance), but don't have high expectations, it gets the job done. Overall, there isn't much to be said. Look at the photo. Post card perfect.

Of all the beaches we checked out during our scooter tour, I'd say this was definitely the most crowded ("crowded" is used loosely, it still wasn't bad). I'd also guess most of the people here were locals (noticed a few beach parties with music, dancing, and cans of Medalla). Once again the beach itself was perfect with soft white sand beaches and nice calm blue waters for swimming. There are a few cabanas with tables if you want to get set up for a lunch, but other than that, there is minimal shade. There is a big parking lot here, but no facilities (no water or restrooms). Of all the beaches east of Esperanza, this one is the closest (other than the ones which are walking distance near Esperanza). A solid 4-star beach experience.

Crystal Clear Water and White sand. Definitely one of the Best beaches in Vieques! Note: This beach is located inside of what was the Naval Base. There's some canopy, but there's not kiosks or anything to buy food, so go prepared. www.islandbreezepr.com * Taxi Service from Ceiba or Fajardo Ferry to San Juan or San Juan Airport. Rainforest tour available departing from both. 787-370-8841

This was by far our favorite beach in Vieques. Don't get me wrong, there are no bad beaches on this island, it's just Playa Caracas was the best one from all the excellent ones. Perfect sand, perfect Caribbean Sea, good snorkeling, great sunsets.

Gorgeous beach! Calm water for swimming and areas for snorkeling. Large parking area and some areas for shade. Can get a little crowded. Don't forget to bring EVERYTHING you will need at the beach that day. Water, food, towels etc. There is no place near by to purchase these items. Also the vans that pick up and drop off are fairly spotty. Make sure that you are ready for them or pre-arrange a pickup time.

Heaven. This beach is so insanely beautiful that you feel like you are living in a postcard. It's a speed-bumpy ride out here, but worth it. We originally planned to go to Garcia Beach/Playuela, but the cab driver missed the turn & dropped us off at Caracas. What a great substitute! We arrived around 10 & there was not another person until noon, when the ferry arrivals start trickling in. At it's busiest there were maybe 40 people there. The beach is lined with palm trees & 8 little cabanas, providing some shade, although on a busy weekend, surely not enough for everyone. The water is warm & clear, the sand is bright white & the scenery is amazing. The snorkeling is decent. Not the best on the island, but worth putting your flippers on for. My only complaint, at all, was that the sand did have a lot of "stickers" in it by the grassy areas, so you may want to wear your sandals!

4/5 if they get a few kiosks up, then this would be perfect! so you got up super effin early to catch the damn ferry on a bumpier ride than expected. you flag a taxi and you're driving down, and you realize there are wild horses running around. you make the mandatory pokemon joke and next thing you know you've pulled up to this strip of beach and it's just you, a few other families, and clear skies and clear water. whoa. if you catch the first ferry, you'll be toes in the sand by maybe 10:45 or 11am, then you'll need to call by around 4pm to get back to the ferry - so total play time about 5ish hours. we pretty much had a good strip of sand just to ourselves. we went in the middle of the week and it was pretty lax - we left our stuff in the little pavillon (i think there were maybe 10 available across the whole beach) and then hit the water. it was lovely and calm, definitely felt more relaxing than other "destination beaches." if you're facing the water, to the left are some rocks that you can walk out towards and have a cute mermaid/merman photoshoot - to the rights are more rock faces where you can do the same. i'd say generally the water was calm and enjoyable for lapping at your feet in the sand and for swimming around. the challenge here is that there's literally you and the beach...and nothing else. which means you need to bring water, food, ice, etc. great, you remembered to pack all the medalla, but then you forgot potable water. uh-oh. great you remembered the snacks, but for staying the bulk of the afternoon you really wish you had something more substantial to eat - you get the point. if you don't want to lug that all with you on the boat, then pick it up at the few restaurants/stores right by the ferry in VQ. you'll be less hangry than we were by the end of it.

A beautiful place to relax

Beautiful! The water is super clean. It is sandy in the beginning and gets coral-i later. Has shades and it gets deep gradually.

For most of the trip you are on paved roads, but for Secret Beach (also known as Pata Prieta), we had to stray off the paved path---a good thing. The main dirt road wasn't too bad, but then we had to turn of this road on to a smaller dirt road. This one was a little more potholed, had quite a few big rocks on it, and steep at times. I maneuvered around the rocks like Han Solo on his Millennium Falcon in an astroid field. It was an adventure just getting to Secret Beach. The parking area is at the bottom of a steep stretch of road. The lot is primitive & fairly small. I've been told that you should leave your vehicle unlocked, so that if someone is going to beak into your car, they don't have to break the window----we had a scooter, so that wasn't an issue. From the parking lot, one walks around a signed gate, and takes a short stroll to the beach. Now given its namesake, I was picturing a totally empty beach, but we saw quite a few groups here. But it wasn't super crowded, and we were definitely able to plant ourselves on a nice patch of sand out of earshot of our neighbors. The beach really is nice in that it's a small "C-shaped" cove. The sand of the beach is white and soft. The waves are fairly small and break right on the beach. This place is your mental image of a tropical beach paradise. Swimming is nice here with not many rocks/coral to worry about. I noticed on a neighboring cove west that there were more rocks. This is where most of the snorkelers were. So yeah, I wouldn't say Secret Beach is a total secret, but I'd say it's definitely worth the rough road. A solid 4.5 stars.

I kept thinking Blue Beach was my favorite, but upon reflection, I truly think Silver was. The pristine white sands and turquoise Caribbean waters were good for the soul. My favorite part was being able to walk quite far out into the gentle warm waves on soft white sand and still be standing with water neck high. The highlight of the vacation was getting to try so many beaches, from the western side of Green Beach, to the most eastern public beach of Silver Beach. I could have easily stayed there forever , prompting a Silver Alert...you can find me at Silver! Pack a picnic and sunscreen. Thank me later.

It's totally worth the extra few minutes drive though. It's not well marked on the Vieques tourist map - its marked as 'platita'. Like most of the beaches this one has no services at all. And like all the beaches its a quick walk from the car, through the mangroves to the sand. The times we have been there it's never been crowded - like maybe a dozen people over a 1/2 mile long beach. This beach has the whitest sand of any of the beaches you can get to on Vieques. In addition to this, there is a small beach where some locals have stacked up some pretty cool rocks. When you first get there, it looks like this small beach is kinda far and you have to swim. Not the case. The water is hip deep and you can walk wade over to the little beach. The beach its self it flat & shallow, no real waves, the water seems to be a little warmer because of how shallow it is, good for snorkeling, good for kids. A must see if you are going to the beaches in Vieques. Orchid Beach / Playa La Plata GPS: 18.117971, -65.375744

This place is so otherworldly and beautiful! While I'm sad that it's not freely open to public,…read morethat's honestly a good thing since the planktons are so fragile. We definitely want to protect and preserve the best (literally) bioluminescent bay in the world, right? So yeah, you can only visit through tour groups. The one-hour tours will definitely feel too short (cries), and you're not allowed to get into the water. Our guide told us that swimming was prohibited since (I think) 2008? I forget the exact year she said. Anyway, some tips if you want them: 1. DEFINITELY only choose tours that use clear-bottom kayaks! Trust me, seeing the water light up and streak along the bottom of the boat was like mini galaxies exploding. It reminded me of the Disney Space Mountain ride. You are missing out if you don't do this. 2. Try to go at or around new moon. Although, even if it's full moon, I'm not sure if this matters if the moon doesn't appear until, say, well after midnight anyway? Hmm... 3. The tours are popular, especially around new moon, so book early! 4. wear water shoes. The walk from land to the kayak in water was sandy and rough on the feet. 5. look for fast streaks of light in the water; those are the fish darting around, super cool to see!! 6. our guide did mention that while this place has bioluminescence year-round, the maximum activity is during summer months. Do what you will with that. This was definitely highlight in our Puerto Rico trip!
