First, I went to the Richmond Hill location, and they did not accept what I brought in. I tried this location and had no luck either. I asked what type of items they accept and was told items that young adults wear that's within 1.5 years. Anything older will likely not be accepted. They were busy when I arrived, so I was told their assessment of what I brought in would take 40 minutes to an hour. We wandered around, browsing and trying on things while we waited. I actually found a pair of leggings that I ended up purchasing. read more

Selling: Went in here when it first opened and the owner gave me a tour. She aid to bring any old clothing in, that they're always looking to buy. Gathered a bunch of trendier items that were not that used/old and from the stores at the mall. I stayed in the store, expecting someone was going to call me when it was done. They didn't. After an hour, I asked if they were done and they said yeah, we can take 1 pair of shorts. Reasons they gave for some items, I could understand, ie. we don't take tuxes. I wasted time and effort getting that stuff together, hauling it there and then hauling it back. I think they just say they're buying to encourage shoppers to come and look around. Should have just donated it like usual. Buying: There are some really great finds at great prices. Unfortunately, not a large selection of larger sizes in clothes/shoes. More for teen/small sizes. Bought a Joe Fresh sweater here for $10, it can't have been more than $18 retail. They have fun jewelry. read more

I should have taken the advice of the other reviewers. While the staff is very friendly, their ability to level set proper expectations on sorting turnaround is so abjectly flawed, it is almost comical, Almost. A more pleasurable experience would be to listen to three hours of screeching chamber music while sitting in a steam bath of garbage. Three hours regardless of how much money one gets is never enough. Let's face it, Plato's Closet is never going to make you rich BUT it shouldn't make you time POOR. They need to have a separate person sorting through the clothing versus having them do triple duty including cash and also answering the phones. Spring Cleaning is around the corner and I've got a whole lot that I need to get rid of. My problem is I'm a hoarder. I've got way too many things that I'm optimistic about wearing but never end up getting around to (I'm talking about that sequinned tank that just never happened). My sister mentioned her friend shops here for gently used clothes with decent brands. She also suggested I sell my clothing here as well. With that, I picked up a few things and dropped them off. The young lady gave me a walk-through on how everything works. They take a lot more casual clothing than the fancier stuff, so forget the sequins if you have them (unless it's casual chic, of course). They take brands like American Eagle, H&M, Dynamite, Aritzia, etc (check their website for more info). They want styles found in malls that are more recent (no more than 2 years old). They take clothing, shoes, jewelry, makeup, and bags. Men's items too! The nice thing about this place is that they pay you 30-40% of what they sell the item for, which is a bit more than what Kind Exchange gives you. They asked me to wait 45 minutes to price everything. They took half my items and said they couldn't take the others for various reasons - too much inventory for those particular items, out of style/date, condition, or they wouldn't be able to sell it. They pay you out in cash which is convenient. Overall, I'm happy with the transaction because I was going to donate some of the stuff but made a bit of money instead. However, it is much less compared to what I actually paid for it, but something is better than nothing especially when you're a broke student. With regards to shopping, the store is quite small so I understand why they don't carry a lot of things. Take a look around while waiting. I found a few shirts I was fond of and the price wasn't bad. Quality varies, but that makes sense depending on if the item is used or new. read more

I called Plato's Closet just before 2:00pm on March 24th to make sure they were accepting clothing to which I was given a time frame of 2 hours "maximum" for a wait time, "but it usually doesn't take that long." I included books in the third bag because I figured they were geared towards teen demographics. I arrived around 2:30pm FROM YORKDALE AREA and gave TWO BAGS AND A HALF worth of clothing (some of which by the way, I bought from your store, but did not fit me anymore). I was told I would RECEIVE A TEXT once they were finished "reviewing" my submission. I didn't expect a big credit back, but the type of service I was exposed to at Plato's Closet in Scarborough was absolutely unprofessional and shocking. I had low battery on my phone so I checked in the first time about 2 hours later at 5:00pm and was told my clothing hadn't been viewed yet and my number was 26, they were still on number 20. I was irritated that I was given 2 hours "maximum" but I never protested, nor was I rude. Now I was told they would be another "half hour max" (yeah right) for them to view my clothing (remember, the bags included items I had previously purchased from them). At 6:00PM (yes, an hour and a half over my "maximum" wait time) I returned and I was met with "We're going to have to pass on everything today" followed with a repeated scripted excuse as to why they would not accept my bags. I was floored. I waited 3 and a half hours for your store only for your store to LIE TO ME. I got back into my car and noticed NO TEXT MESSAGE as I was promised, which I then asked myself, "Did they even go through my bags?" My bags were tightly tied and my clothes squished to the bottom as if they had been sitting for a looooooong time. My bags and clothes were in the SAME CONDITION AS THEY WERE WHEN I GAVE THEM TO YOU PATHETIC LIARS. What was the point of me travelling over half an hour out to your overrated store and wait for another 3 and a half just for you to lie to me. Don't you think that is absolutely unprofessional customer service? YOU WASTED MY TIME AND LIED TO ME. I had perfect condition floral printed denim from Abercrombie- not that you would have known, in those bags. I looked through your store and saw absolutely NOTHING that caught my eye. EVERYTHING was black and boring. I offered you floral patterns, European clothing straight from Italy, lace dresses, paisley corduroy pants that apparently were unacceptable? Yet sifting through the garbage that you provide your customers and "demographic", George brand from Walmart was more profitable for teens? What kind of teens shop at your store? I was handed a brochure with items that you were looking for. I saw floral jumpers listed. If you went through my bags, you would have seen I HAD A FLORAL JUMPER! The girl at the counter was clearly awkward about giving me back my bags, which made me feel a little suspicious. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, because what kind of store lies to customers? She started writing something down, I figured she was going to hand it to me. She stared at me and said "We're done here." instead of, "Can I help you with anything else?" I explained I thought she wanted to give me something else? She laughed, apologized and said, "Sorry, I'm out of it today! I'm so out of it!" Yeah clearly, cause you couldn't even take the time to look through my bags. What kind of communication skills are these, honestly? There was nothing there for "teens", give me a break! What kind of teens want to wear mundane, grey, boring colours? Looking at the clothing that you offer, there were no professional, job-related items. Everything was bland and boring, I honestly have to say. Again, if you didn't like what I offered you, that's fine. It's the fact that you LIED to me and wasted my Saturday afternoon. Remember, not everyone here is as incompetent as your staff. I noticed right when I got in my car...you actually think your customers are fools! I'll explain again, YOU DID NOT EVEN LOOK IN MY BAG AND WASTED MY TIME! I ended up taking the bags to Value Village where I was met with a young man who first of all, greeted me with a "hello" and thanked me for my donation. I would get excited coming into your store, but NEVER AGAIN would I step in and put time into your business. A great concept with LAZY, IMMATURE, AND RUDE, (your staff honestly did not look like they wanted to be there) STAFF. I was forced to give you ONE STAR, or else I couldn't review you. I called this place before hand to make sure that they are interested in purchasing parajumpers and other items so I wouldn't be driving there for no reason since I live really far. The lady on the phone sounded nice and said they do purchase those items and that I can drop by. I said okay. The next day I drove there for 45 minutes and having this girl approach me, she asked if I were looking to sell and I said yes I am. Within 5 min looking at my item, she told me that my parajumper and true religion jeans are not up to sell because they're trying to target young teens, younger adults and that these type of clothes aren't what they're looking for. bought and sold stuff, bought multiple times and sold 3x. I didn't bring my great items so I didn't earn that much, each time $8-15. For not really expensive items, (I keep my Lulu and such for other means of selling) I didn't really expect much either and what I got I deducted from my purchase total. I don't sell to make $$$ but to get rid and to buy something new for a lower price anyway so it's fine. Staff is ok but selection has been a bit worse lately than when I started going few yrs ago so I usually get one item or nothing when I shop. My complaints - I wish bag choice was better at both Toronto and even the Brampton locations as it is really sub par or (except for pouches/clutches or whatever which I don't use) I just come at a wrong time every time. Jewelry selection could be improved as well, looks like they have their own wholesale source for jewelry items and the selection isn't something. But, she did anyways and lugged a bunch of garbage sized filled bags here. She brought maybe 100 pieces of clothing to this store and they only offered to buy 13 pieces..for a total of $106. I kid you not.. Out of that $106, there was a brand new MJ bag, coach bag and other like- new clothes/accessories. They offered her $20 for the brand new leather Marc Jacobs bag. $20. I told her she could get more for selling it to a homeless person. She almost keeled over at the register when they gave her the itemized list of cash they were willing to offer me. PLEASE heed the warnings on yelp and do not let this store rip you off!! Yes they are the middle men, that take the work out of selling you that clothing but it's not like they can sell your items immediately anyways. So might as well sell it yourself unless you really need the cash. I'm pretty sure you would get more from a consignment store. YOUR CLOTHES ARE WORTH MORE THAN WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO OFFER YOU. Came in the other day with a ton of clothes I don't wear anymore. Some of them still had tags on them, and I would say most were from Hollister , so pretty trendy. I'll admit some of my shoes weren't in the best shape , but they took nothing. They told me my clothes didn't fit the stores image, or they were too stocked up on certain items. I only brought them in due to a post I saw on their Instagram claiming they needed more of these items. So basically wasted my time driving all the way over there for no reason. I wasn't having it , so I drove the Richmond Hill location which was beautiful. They gladly accepted at least a couple of my items , and told me the rest of my items for the moment weren't selling that well. They don't give you the most money but it is easy to sell here, their computer system provides you with a price and if you like it, they pay you cash right away. I've been here twice. I find that the girls working here are incredibly friendly and helpful! Browsing through, they have a huge selection and everything is organized very, very well. Prices are generally decent too and you can score some expensive brands for cheap. Selling wise, they do truly only take things within 2 years old. And I find they don't care as much about "name brand", as they took many of my Forever 21 things over more expensive brands. You also do have to keep in mind that they do sell things for cheap, and they only give you 30-40% of their selling price, so don't expect to make much money. I came here because they had a small pop-up rack at the bi-weekly Farmer's Market on my University campus. Was quite satisfied with what they had on the racks there and since I was looking for some new pieces to add to my wardrobe, I decided to visit the Scarborough store to take a look. I had brought along four hoodies that I had never worn, and were in perfect condition. They told me it would be a 45-minute wait. Perfectly fine with me; gave me some time to browse around. I was curious to see what condition their clothes were in: some had holes in them, some had some extreme pilling, one shirt had a huge stain on the sleeve, a t-shirt I pulled off the rack had multiple threads loose... The list goes on and on. When I went to go claim my items, they told me that they "couldn't take my items because there was some slight pilling". I mean, fine sure it is up to them in regards to what they want to buy. However I was definitely surprised to hear that the condition of my hoodies was why they didn't want them, considering what condition most of the clothes they were selling were in. TLDR; don't go here thinking you're going to get much for your clothes, if anything at all. You're better off selling second-hand clothes on those Facebook groups than here. Buying-wise, you might find something of your liking but make sure you have time to spare. You'll be leafing through those racks for quite a long time to find something that's in good condition. read more

Just went for the first time to sell some clothes! Process took a little over an hour as they checked each article for brand, demand, quality, etc, and I had brought in about 20+ articles. I was expecting maybe $50-$60 but I made over $100! Very fair prices for what I brought. This place is seeking brands and articles of clothing that are fairly high demand so don't bring formalwear! I recently found this place and lovingly refer to it as "Kind Exchange, but amped." Look carefully for it as it is located in a strip plaza type area and it's easy to miss the turn lane for it! The selection is huge there with tons of items from popular brands. A lot of the items are lightly used and in pretty good condition - although I did spot a few things with pilling and small holes. Their organization is amazing - sizes are marked (and abundant from XS to XL), and everything is arranged by colour, which made looking through the store really easy. I could just zoom right to what I wanted. I ended up with some pretty amazing deals on higher-end items (Aritzia, American Apparel.) The prices are way less expensive than I assumed and I was over the moon with some amazing $3 and $5 purchases. I also took my clothes there and it was an okay experience. I had a really helpful person who started me off and was very polite. A warning to those bringing in clothes: If you have a lot or come in later on in the day, it will take a while for them to go through what you have - an hour or two. So don't be surprised if they tell you to come back. Otherwise I'm happy that some of my clothes were taken, but I was disappointed at how few they were considering I was bringing in items recently bought and from brands that were popular in there. Another puzzling thing was a small bag returned to me with instructions that if I launder the items I can bring them back. I find that pretty funny considering the items in there were washed or never worn at all (with the exception of one sweater!) However, they clearly scrutinize what they take and it shows in their merchandise. I really like the selection they have and I definitely will go back, not so much for selling but definitely for buying. read more

Dont sell your clothes here if you think you can sell them for more than $4 online. I bought 20 items in and they only wanted to keep 9. The items that i bought in were in great condition and all brands that retail for $60-$200 each. However i only got $40 as my offer. On top of that, they try on your clothes and if you decline the offer, you'll end up going home with dirty and stretched out clothes. read more

I'll start off by saying that I'm not a thrifter and came to this place only out of curiosity. The place was nice and neat, smelled good, and everything was well organized. However, it was very pricey: a worn-out, fuzzy flannel shirt for $12?!!!!!! The same shirt, brand new, sells for much less at old navy on the clearance rack ...I know, because I've got dozens of them! I understand that they have a business to run but thrifting at such high prices just doesn't make sense to me. I checked out the website online and spoke with my best friend who had a really great experience selling some of her older threads. I got to the store about 30 minutes before closing and was told by a really nice guy that he would assess my clothing if one of the other female staff members agreed. A younger female staff member, who was not doing anything, came to help me and immediately told me that the store was too close to closing to assess/buy my clothing. I told her that I had travelled all the way from West Toronto to their store and that I did not have a lot of time to come back earlier the next day/week. The younger female staff member told me that she really wanted to help me and that she could go ahead and assess/buy my clothing if the other female manager agreed. After the younger staff member asked the manager if she could process my clothing, the female manager took one look at me and said no. She was incredibly rude about her decision and showed no compassion, understanding, care or respect for my business or my time/gas getting to their store. This is the first time I've ever dealt with the Plato's Closet brand, and I can honestly say it may just be my last. One thing I did notice though, is the fact that all the other Plato's Closet locations seem to have much higher YELP ratings then this location.... I truly hope upper management and/or the corporate owners will take notice!! Points of Improvement: 1. Post CLEAR SIGNAGE/MESSAGING on your website stating that you will not accept clothing beyond 30 minutes to closing. It is NOT acceptable to have clients/customers drive all the way to the store just to be told they have to come back. 2. If you're going to keep client/customer property overnight, put together a receipt acknowledging what the client/customer brought in. It is NOT acceptable to expect customers to simply leave their bag of goods at your store under the good faith assumption that your RUDE staff members won't steal or tamper with their stuff. 3. Provide better customer service training. No one wants to do business with a store that could care less about customer satisfaction. My individual review may not mean much to your company or store manager right now, but in the long run it could mean the loss of future business. read more

Great selection here and always lots of new inventory coming in daily. This is one of my favourite thrift store locations as they have a great selection of casual wear including Lululemon, Aritzia, and Zara, some of which is still selling in stores and where I like to take my gently used clothing to make some quick cash which can be reused towards a same day purchase (save the tax!) Best days to shop include Boxing Day (additional 20% off items below $100). Best tip I can give is to follow their Instagram account to be alerted of cool finds by staff which you can put on hold for pick up (varies by store location) and to take advantage of the trade-in option if you have anything to sell just don't be upset if they refuse to buy your clothing as they only purchase styles that will sell and will only give you approximately 30% of what they will price it for sale. For example, for my Lululemon tanks and crops, I received $3-$4 per piece. read more

You really have to manage your expectations at this place. It's pretty disorganized to shop, they are very picky on what they'll buy (though the quality of the majority of their merchandise doesn't reflect this - maybe they have so much old stuff they now can only take the very newest of styles), and don't expect them to offer much for what they do buy (take any high quality items elsewhere, e.g. their pricing model offered around $7 for a $150 sweater, $13 for a $170 necklace, $3 for a $70 name brand jacket - all unworn, which I didn't really mind since I just wanted the stuff gone). That being said, it's a good place to bring stuff you would otherwise toss in the donation bin, and if you look long enough you'll find a few nice things. Think of it as a value village with a few nicer items, I managed to trade in some old stuff I'd never wear again for some new summer pieces. Watch them at the check out though, they left security tags on a few of the things I bought which was annoying to deal with. read more

I had heard mixed reviews about Plato's closet so I was optimistic going here. When I first entered, the staff was very friendly and welcoming and the selection was great. However, I went to sell some items that I either wore ONCE or I never got around to wearing and still had the tags on them. I was told it would be an hour wait and to look around the store. I did so and was looking at their quality to see how it compared to mine. I found two items with spots on them and a pair of ripped boots. Naturally, I was feeling pretty good about my items. Once I went to claim my items, they chose two items (the OLDEST and most used of the items I had by the way) and said the others were either too worn out or stained (which is absolutely ridiculous and not true seeing as some were brand new). I do understand they cannot take everything which is why I was okay with the fact that they only chose two out of ten .. until she told me what she would give me for them. She offered me $1.50 for a crop top and a bodysuit. $1.50..? Really? I chose to keep my items. Honestly I spent more money in GAS getting to their location. Such a rip off and totally turned me off to even shopping there. The one thing I can say they're good at is losing customers. Never going back. read more

As an avid thrifter I have gone to several gently used clothing stores and was left disappointed. The prices were either way too over priced, the environment was not welcoming or the merchandise wasn't in good shape. However that is not the case with Plato's Closet! The environment is very welcoming, with lovely employees greeting you at the door with a smile and attentive to when you need help. The music and organized clothing displays also adds to the upbeat environment and shopping experience! The selection at the store is huge, from designer brands to basic store brands. As a student still in university who is struggling financially to dress trendy, I found the prices to be reasonable and very affordable. Compared to the clothing conditions and prices at some of the second hand stores I have gone too, the quality can not be compared. I have found so many gems at Plato's from everyday basics to designer brands, and most of them were in great condition. Definitely would recommend Plato's to anyone. The women's section is abundant with variety and same goes for the men's section. I've looked through some of the men's clothing and I have to say I was pleased.
