Plato's closet it's a national chain for thrift thing and stuff. They have a lot of women's clothes I would say 75% of women's clothes are very small selection and then stuff so I don't really speak on the women's clothes I guess but it was OK that the men's selection they had a lot of coats. The price point was probably a little high for what I've seen thrifting. The sales people seemed engaged with the customers you know running around taking orders and they have like a whole system of like tracking and reserving stuff in the back so that's always positive but yeah for women's clothing like I said a lot of women's clothing go check it out for that not much men at all. read more

I've been visiting Ithaca from Georgia for many years. My mother and I come to the store every time I'm in town. This time my husband went and was pleased. I have clothes that I got years ago and they are still in great condition. Anyone complaining about the prices should understand the cost of Polo driving shoes compared to the $15 we spent. There is always something to be found here. My mom has sold clothes in the past and if your items are needed, they pay very well. The employees are rotating and I doubt you'll ever see the same one twice. The ones today were helpful, reminded me about my points and rung up or purchases quickly. I'll continue coming here on every visit and happily pay the prices at a fraction of their original cost. read more

Warning: if you come the next day to pick up your clothes, they will only give you store credit and will donate the rest of your things without your consent. I have been selling clothes here for years without any issues. I dropped things off last night and came back an hour later- they have different holiday hours that are not posted online, closing at 8 instead of 9. Then I got a text this morning saying my buy was $58 and my clothes were ready to be picked up. I called to make sure and they explained their policy, I offered to change the hours on google for them because they were inaccurate, so this doesn't happen to anyone else and she hung up on me I feel bad for the people working here, depending on who you talk to they can be unnecessarily rude. I will be driving to the Syracuse or Rochester locations instead next time! read more

The selection at this Plato's is... not great. Obviously I occasionally go in anyways to browse because you never know when you'll hit a rare gem but when you can get better deals at the TJ Maxx clearance rack nearby it leaves something to be desired. read more

The employees were rather rude and obviously were just trying to get money from me. I brought in ~seven pairs of jeans ranging from old navy to MK. They took none of them, except for a new pair from aero. For less than five dollars. I told them I changed my mind and they were mean to me about it. They also tried to not give back all the other pairs. Things were a bit overpriced.. a bit of a rip off, they had SHEIN clothes for like $20. I'd say stick to the Re-Use center in Triphammer or good-will. read more

Clothes are great. Prices are higher than I've seen at other Plato's. For example, jeans were mostly $15 or $20 when I'm used to them being $5, 7, and 10. The bath and body works resales are great deals. I'm seeing new sections now: pajamas and leotards. But the staff... They are the reason this store lost stars. Jess with the short red hair was abrasive and rude and shaking her head and scorning at the clothes someone was turning in and trying to sell. There is no need for her act in any way but saying sorry, those are what they're looking to buy right now. The Asian girl at the checkout with the glasses falling off her face again didn't know how to work the register like the past two times I've been there. She asked Jess for help because she couldn't get a receipt and Jess was like there's nothing we can do as she walked away as she was still talking to the customer. I've never seen her smile once. She yelled at a customer that there was a line and I'm busy here. They're just giving off a hostile atmosphere every time I'm in here. The one had her 4-6 year old son eating greasy pizza while he was touching all the clothes behind the counter with his greasy hands. If you can't get him into childcare and need to bring your kid to work, at least put him in the back room and don't have him touching the merchandise and thinking it's cute to ruin it with his greasy hands. WORST plato's is located in Ithaca by far! I came in last week and their credit card machine was broken. They told me they could put the Ray Ban sunglasses for me on hold until it is fixed and that i'll get a call when it works again by a young man. I came back a couple days later to check in and an older lady rudely tells me that they were already put back out and sold without ever notifying me. She said they only hold for 3 days but it's only been 2 days since I put them on hold. This is one of many bad experiences I've had coming in. Avoid at all times, rude, unforfestional and junky. Plato's Closet is well organized and the clothes nicely displayed. Varied styles, most good quality and fun to pick through. Some good deals to be had. I've shopped many times and sold twice. Selling doesn't bring much cash even for high end, brand name, new (with tags on) and gently used items. Staff was rude the second time I went in to sell, but -hey-I was clearing out my closets! It' nice that they'll donate stuff you don't want to take back home. read more

Had a horrible experience at this store! I called ahead of time to ask what time the store closes (on a Sunday) because timings online have been inaccurate for many businesses since the pandemic. I was told on the phone they close at 9pm. I made special childcare arrangements just so I could go to the store to sell a bunch of clothes and accessories. I live 25 minutes away and spent my time and gas driving to Plato's Closest only to get there to have the store employee tell me they close at 6pm and they can not go through my stuff and buy anything right now. I explained what happened and they said the best they can do is go through 1 bag out of 7-8 bags I had. They didn't want to stay a few minutes late and accommodate and were overall rude and not understanding at all. Horrible customer service, go to Trader K's instead where they are always nice and respectful. read more

I see all they worry about is getting good clothing in, exchange them for little to no money and overcharge people there clothing on the racks. This was avery interesting experience! I brought in some summer clothing and shoes. The majority were never worn and purchased last summer. The 20 something year old judging the clothing was braging about how she had a hang over and how the clothing was outdated??? However one of her girls at the counter liked a pair of shoes and snatched them. Everything was brought in neatly and folded yet, was wadded up and thrown in the bag to be returned to me. Save your money and shop elsewhere. I have brought in clothes and they only gave me money for one pair of jeans. They sell jeans at twenty dollars a pair used! When you can go online to clothing brand websites and pay a little more and sometimes less for brand new jeans that no one has worn. I always walk out of this store empty handed. I thought this place was great at first, a change from Trader K's. Now I realize that I would rather go there! They are picky with clothes, yet buy the ugliest things. They say they "Pay Well" ha no! I brought in brand new Vera Bradley products and received 16 dollars, I should have just kept them. I saw a pair of true religion "capris" that I liked. I tried them on and they were cut! Plato's Closet pays better for used clothes than other consignment stores in town, the staff is *way* more pleasant than the staff at the other consignment stores in town, and it sells clothes for a bit less than what I've seen at Trader K's lately. Another huge bonus is that the clothing is very clean and the store does not have that dingy/musty smell that overwhelms Trader K's and Mama Goose. I'm a happy convert to Plato's Closet and am so glad that there is another consignment store in town! I think the locally-owned stores need to see what a more reasonable consignment store looks and smells like. read more

One may want to shop around to other similar stores in the area, if visiting their Ithaca location. They're quite picky with what they buy, even after saying on the phone that they were desperate for men's wear. They bought 4 of 29 items and offered a very low amount. Since this was the first time using a consignment store, I didn't realize that until I tried the other local one... I made out fine in the end, because another store took 15 more of those items. 7 of them were brand new pairs of pants. read more

If I could I would rate my last experience a 0. Side note my sister works here and she's amazing. I went to sell clothes and a worker, JESS, a woman whom does not like my sister passed off the clothes and didn't even look through them solely based on the fact that my sister works there and she happens to not like her. I think someone like that working there is turning away customers because quite frankly I don't want to go there anymore now. I hadn't gone there extensively before but this just pissed me off and it was a huge waste of time. She told me 20 minutes until it would be ready and she just set it on the floor and didn't look through it at all. 20 minutes I wasted there because that woman doesn't like my sister now it affected my view of the store as a whole. I've always enjoyed shopping here, but every time I try to sell it's horrendous. The employees are rude and unprofessional, borderline snobbish. They barely greet you when you come in the door and never smile. They claim to provide trendy and youthful clothing, but each time I bring my daughter's clothing in to sell, they toss it aside without a second glance, only opting to purchase one or two things. A great addition to thrift stores in Ithaca! Pretty well organized and definitely some good finds. The style tends to be a little young teen look, but if you take some time they have good brands like j crew, athleta, loft, etc. Lots of people working which is great and good prices. I am really disappointed of the way I was treated at Platos. I want to know who are the experts when buying clothes because the clothes my daughter sold to them were well worth more than what was given and further more a group of guys came in with a bucket full of "dingy" clothing and Platos gave them $25.00. Huh???? not sure what qualifies as an expert in choosing clothes but I think the employer must have knew the guys w/bucket of clothing and was helping them out because the clothes we had were clean and nicely folded as well as in style. They said they were going to donate the clothes that they're not going to keep... I seriously doubt that....I ask her to return them to me and she threw them on the counter unfolded. ie: a 2 pc top - she took 1 pc of the 2 pc top, brand spanking new...huh??? What was she really looking for????? Not feeling this store at all. I rather pay full price for new items then accept what they have to offer. Platos is a rip off and DO NOT KNOW STYLE OR FASHION. It is so, so nice to finally have an alternative to Trader K's in this town, and this store rocks in comparison - they purchase clothes whenever they are open (TK's only purchases certain hours on certain days of the week), they have no limit to the amount of clothing customers can sell (TK's does), and they buy all seasons all the time (TK's does not). Also the store is cleaner, less cramped, and has a much better selection than Trader K's - every time I shop here I find tons of great clothes from great brands, while Trader K's is ridiculously picky about what they buy and yet the majority of the stuff on their racks is stretched out, faded stuff that was trendy in the '90s (really I think they would benefit from throwing a lot of it out). My only qualm with Plato's Closet is that they are also a bit picky - they passed on a brand new pair of Fila sneakers as well as a mint Saks Fifth Avenue blazer among other things that were in my bag, but I'm no expert so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt (if you're looking to make any reasonable amount of money on your used clothing, consignment stores are not the way to go anyway).
