This is a review for the one in 170th Street mayfield area. I take great emphasis on customer service so I will say the employees are very immature and inexperienced with fashion, I mean the only brands they know are the ones from the WEM. They don't know lanvin, marni, brunello, or balmain. They know for sure lululemon and all it's sweat and yoga pants. I brought in a bag of clothes about 25 items. They were brands like 10 pieces of ivivva, 1 piece of lululemon, banana Republic, zara, guess, I put a very expensive marni jacket , mackage and other brands that are great quality. Size 0 or extra small. Some were barely worn some of the Original tags were just removed but i never wore them. And guess what? They only picked one item. I like how fast they are in assessing my clothing, but did they really looked at it? Maybe I had high expectations. I couldn't believe they didn't even take my ivivvas! Those are like lululemon. They for sure cater to young audience with a typical edmonton fashion style. Usually edmontonians wear sweat pants,yoga , hoodies, birkenstock, aritzia, lululemon and the ubiquitous fanny pack/ cross body bag. They don't cater to classy style. I'm OK with what they pay me for that one item. I'm not please with the customer service. I didn't purchase anything because I'm trying to get rid of my stuff. read more

This review is for Plato's Closet Edmonton 127th St and 152 Ave. I took in 30+ items to be consigned from shorts, tees, blouses, handbags, shoes, belts and casual as well as dressy dresses. All were in like new condition. An hour later I was texted that the items were ready for pick up. They kept 3 items. When I brought the remainder home, it appeared to me that some weren't even taken out of the bin. They were still folded as to the way I put them in. I feel that they prefer items that would work for the younger under 30s and not middle aged women. I wish they would have indicated this when I phoned them twice to ask questions. I was told they take designer items as well as from stores such a Walmart. Anyway I am writing this as information to women over 50!! read more

I bought a dress here (actually at the new location) on 104th. It was $24, but it was a good brand. After I took the tags off, I realized the elastic in the arms was completely destroyed, which was difficult to see without actually wearing it. When I tried to return it (with receipt, within the return window, and with the removed tag), they refused because the tag was removed, even though the item was damaged. Not a policy that looks after the customer by any means. I appreciate the staff looking into it for me, but it's just not fair to the customer to sell damaged items and refuse to take them back. Update: I tried to return at another location, and they were in the process of returning it with no issues, but when they realized it was a separate store, they couldn't because it was a separate system. It's literally just the one on 104th. I don't think I'll be looking to head back any time soon. read more

I had to see for myself, so that afternoon I popped over, I had a good look around and headed to the mens clothing. I was impressed when I picked up a brand new set of Vans shoes for only $12. Nice little vintage shop hidden behind whyte ave. There was quiet a large selection of gently used items. Items were organized very well, winter sweaters and clothing at front of the store and summer discounted items at back. The Price point was very good. And you could find items like lulu lemon and Aritzia on their own separate sections also at very good prices. I was presently surprised at the large men's section as well. And I even saw a few Oilers jerseys for sale. Only down fall is there wasn't a lot of older unique vintage pieces here. More items you'd see in the shops in the last 5-8 years. read more

First time coming here today, and it was fantastic! I usually struggle in thrift stores because of the way everything is structured, as a lot of stuff is just thrown on racks. Although stuff is donated, the quality of the items are "brand name" and in great condition! Heck, they have sections for Aritzia items! The selection of items may be a hit or miss, depending on the day and what's been donated, but for today it has been a hit! I was served very quickly and kindly for a fitting room. The ladies at the till was also very kind, especially when I was asking about some shoes that were behind the tills. Overall, I have decided to make a commitment with my friend to come here once a month. This place is awesome! read more

i only have one star because I had to so I can leave a review. I try very hard to always show my gratitude towards businesses that deserve it. I have went above and beyond when I get good customer service. I try very hard to never complain because we're all human and things happen but my experience at Plato's Closet was horrendous! It was like one giant high school. The staff there that I have personally dealt with was unbelievably rude, disrespectful, unprofessional and mean. I'm a mom and teach my young ladies to be respectful and kind. I get customer service can be hard at times but I was being extremely pleasant and always have been when I go in there. My experience was so uncomfortable that the said woman decided to talk badly about me not realizing I could hear everything she was saying to her coworkers, so I walked around the corner and calmly said, "at least wait until I'm out of the store to talk about me." When this said woman left the other two staff told me they were uncomfortable around her and working with her because of how she treated everyone and that there have been MANY complaints about this woman with no resolve. The manager said there have been none and basically said these other two ladies were lying. The manger didn't believe it and didn't really want to hear it and justified the unprofessionalism and immaturity. I have never in my life run into anything like this in a store! But I'm old school and professionalism is huge to me. I spoke with the manager who seemed short fused, didn't really believe me and justified her actions. Apparently there have been a lot of complaints from customers and the manager not caring. Anyway I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this? It really sucked. Went to Plato's closet with a bag of brand name clothes in excellent condition and got my bag back with most of my stuff still in it. My Aritzia pants that are still sold in stores today for $128 weren't taken because they had a small pen mark on them. A white Aritiza top that I wore once wasn't taken because it was white and they don't like taking white clothes. A new skirt from American eagle wasn't taken because I was told animal print isn't in style anymore. Timberland booties weren't taken because I didn't wipe them off properly. I looked around and a lot of their stuff is not in great condition and they had a lot of stuff from Ardenes and Shein. Went straight to Goodwill to drop my stuff and probably won't return to PC. read more

First time today and I was excited to get clear of nice clothes for some money. Wow - disappointed. Staff working there do not have an understanding for plus size womens clothes. Save your time and gas money. I saw a woman leaving with bags when I got there and I heard staff telling a young woman they were not taking any of her clothes. I LOVE this store! Last Friday, I came here for the first time. I could literally spend hours perusing the racks here! I found most of the items ranging around $10-$45. Fair prices considering the brand names and good condition of the merchandise. I was a bit overwhelmed with the selection in this store, but after calming down a bit, I was able to simmer down and make some decisions on my purchases. I found a gently used Lululemon wrap up jacket, which easily retails for over $100, and bought it for only $45! I also found a Babaton blouse (from Aritzia) which easily retails for over $60, and bought it for only $10! I also found a Ted Baker handbag for $8! Ted Baker purses, are not a brand commonly sold or well known in Edmonton. I'm not sure what the original price of this bag was, but I'm sure it was at least $100 or more. What a steal!! I found this store clean and well organized. In addition to clothing, they have an assortment of jewelry, shoes and handbags for sale. They also have a men's section. Fitting rooms are also available. The staff are friendly and helpful. The store is conveniently located in the the Whyte Ave area, close to McDonalds. This is a great store! I've been here a few times - both to purchase and to sell. I've lucked out and also been unlucky but let's face it - it's a consignment store - what did you expect? It doesn't cater to all sizes and styles all the time, it has what it has and sometimes you get exactly what you want - like the Michael Kors red fantastic shoes that fit me to a tee for $20 bucks (BEST DEAL EVER!); and then sometimes you walk away empty handed. You have to be willing to do that. But, that's why when you walk in with a basket full of clothes sometimes you will walk out with that same basket. Because they are fussy about what they take. And, as much as I wish they would take all my stuff, if they did that then the closet would be full of not so great things. It's because they are fussy it does have a great selection and pretty darn good prices. I love the fact that when you do sell, you get cash on the spot (usually just to spend right away in the store!) And, they have a punch card to allow to save up to redeem on future purchases. It adds up quick so don't forget to get your stamps when you either purchase or sell. The ladies in the store are all very helpful. The only reason I take off one star is parking. Sometimes it can be a bear to find parking in the area. Even though it is free in front of the store it's hard to get in prime hours. And, sometimes, the store can be a little messy. I get that it gets busy but it just makes it hard to find the great deal that are tucked away all the stuff I don't want to see. Still, definitely worth a stop. I do wonder why I'm sharing with others about this great new place though - now all the deals will be gone by the time I get there! read more

I was so excited to give away some clothes - but after my experience here I feel like it's so not worth it, and they would be of better use to those in need anyway!! To start things off we needed a bin rather than a plastic bag, which is understandable. I went to buy one at the dollar store nearby for 5$. I then handed them my clothes and waited. The store wasn't that busy but the girls working their were literally sitting back and chatting and didn't seem to be doing any actual work. After a very long wait they informed me that everything except two items were unusable. They wouldn't accept any of my white items (because they may get dirty on the rack) even an expensive jacket with nice sleeves in good condition. The other clothes in good condition were deemed unusable when honestly they were far better than a lot of items I saw while wandering. In the end they accepted a shirt and a pair of pants and gave me 4$ (these items were probably worth at least 50$) So I lost money at Plato's closet buying the plastic bin at the start!! As a former shopaholic who has been reformed into a very frugal Fran, Plato's Closet is almost heaven for me. On my very first visit, along with scarves, shirts and dresses, I scored a fabulous Marc Jacobs clutch for only $6! I actually try to limit how often I go to Plato's because I always walk out with armfuls of cute clothes that I don't really ~need~ but that are just so cute! I went to a dress event once that was buy one, get one 50% and left with 9 dresses for less than $40. Often casual t-shirts are anywhere from $4-10 and dresses are up anywhere from $6-18. Seriously girls, SO MANY CUTE DRESSES. I haven't had much luck in the jeans department but I prefer to buy jeans new anyways. Come to think of it, it's been a few months since I've been there so I'm definitely due for a summer wardrobe update... On the sellers side of things, it's not so great. I once brought in three huge bags of items and they only took about two of them and gave me maybe $6? And I did this after I had already shopped there so I had a pretty good idea of what type of items they take. I've tried to sell at other consignment stores as well and at this point I just prefer to donate my old clothes to Goodwill and the like. I love the stamp card! One stamp for every $10 spent - after 20 stamps you get 20% off your next purchase. I'm sure I've gotten stamps when I've sold there, too. I recommend Plato's to all of my thrifty and/or shopaholic ladies and they've loved it! read more

From one thrift shopper to another - Platos closet is a great consignment shop. I can only give it a 4/5 because i havnt sold anything (editing this below as i did sell something now) there but i have gone there to check it out. They have a ton of brand name finds for reasonable prices. I would say the store is better a goodwill and a winners or marshalls. What i like the best is that everything is in decent condition! Zippers working, clean shoes etc. They have a variety of clothes, some accessories, purses etc. I didnt see anything too formal for example wedding or grad attire but it fits the average joe. Lots of lulu lemon and jeans, cute dresses ..even some mens wear. For example: lulu lemon tank top $12, Lulu lemon black zip up hoody sweater $30, dynamite pants $4, heals $14 etc .. happy shopping :) I took 1 box of clothes in and 1 box of shoes. They only bought 9 items! But i got 78 dollars for the 9 items. I still have to go threw and check which items they actually accepted one for sure were new ugg boots that tie up (thos alone should have gotten more then 78 dollars but its okay i wasnt about to wear them) The items they didnt take which i was pretty surprised by were a leather guess coat brand new doesnt fit my chest anymore so i decided to sell it. Some real leather booties i had that were in mint condition as they were half a size too small for me (they sell online for over 800 dollars a pair) bcbg max. And they didnt accept them! ..i had another paid of brand new with tags b.o.c. boots and they didnt accept them. Also didnt accept a lulu lemon hoodie white pergect shape. Some other items i could understand depending on what they are currently selling based on style or reason..but i didnt expect to leave with 2 boxes full of stuff haha it is what it is i guess... Fyi you do not need an appointment to sell your clothes to them. You bring them in they look them over within 5min to 3 hrs mine took about half an hour so i browsed the store. You are allowed to not accept the offer. You also can NOT leave your things overnight. You need to pick them up or take your money the same day. Once your items are reviewed they will write your name on a board by the cashier so that you dont need to continously ask if your quote is ready. I do believe some people trade their clothes instead of taking money as they found something else they liked in the store. The store is definetly filled with a lot of nice items. read more

There is A LOT of stuff - I did feel a little overwhelmed the first time I walked in, but things are laid out in a way that makes sense and the staff are there to help if you can't find what you're looking for. I first time heard about this store and heard that this store buys clothes from people. so I went there few weeks ago to sell some stuff, most of the stuff are brand new or only used for couple of times. I have had mixed experiences with this store. First time around, I dropped off a big bag and received $48 for about 11 items that they decided to take, which I was satisfied with. Their prices are very affordable for customers so don't expect to get more than a few dollars for each item, even if they are brand name. Next time I went however, I brought a bag of similar clothing styles and brands and they took one item and gave me only $1. I heard that there is a variety in regards to who sorts through your items, and also the season and demand, but I was surprised to have such a different experience. Despite this, as a buyer, I have found the quality of items to go down recently and they seem to be focusing on cheaper quality items that sell for less without much editing in regards to style. Nonetheless, I have had a couple of good finds, such as a Zara skirt for $5. Overall, it's a good place to get cheap t-shirts and dresses and the low prices benefit the buyer if you manage to find some items of decent quality and style. read more

Since hearing about Plato's Closet through their Facebook ads, I have visited and sold with them multiple times. I find the buying process quite easy and the selection and prices compared to retail is a steal. Similar to what other Yelpers here have already mentioned, I do find the selling process a little awkward and could be more "transparent". Often I find it also depends on the particular staff member. They give you an approximate length of time it will take to check out all your items, take your items, you sign off, and then you shop (or leave and come back) while they appraise it. They write your name on the white board when they're ready for you to come back. They give me the total number of items they are buying from me and one total dollar amount for everything. My "records-loving" self would prefer a breakdown of each individual they bought, with the brand, particular item type (ex. shirt, jeans, jacket, etc.) with the price they're paying me. The girls are willing to show me a somewhat breakdown when I ask, but a take-away breakdown form would be nice. Otherwise this is a great place to buy and sell items. I do plan to be back often. read more

For those of you who are experienced consigners, this could be a big disappointment. I took in four giant bags of clothes and everything was rejected! I then took them to my regular consignment store a week later and they took 85 % of what I brought in. I am careful about condition, cleanliness, and whether an item is in style and I was shocked that Plato's was not interested in my items. One was a designer dress with the tag still on. I don't begrudge the staff; they were nice and polite - but this is a cash for casual clothes operation, not a traditional "consignment" store. read more

As a seller, this shop ain't the best. They're very picky with what they will take and I noticed they give on average about $3 an item. They rejected most of the items I brought in for not being in their "style". As a buyer, I was pretty disappointed with the condition of most of their items. There are lots of better consignment stores in Edmonton and surrounding area, that are more then happy to greet customers kindly, and offer assistance. What a frickin disappointment! Brought in at least 20 items, most of them my boyfriends clothing of which are high name brand items, only to get $4.20 for 2 pairs of shorts! That's the equivalent of gas I spent to go there and back, for basically nothing. Although I can understand a part of their policy (stuff that is a bit more worn in), the rest I find completely ridiculous IE no "business" wear, doesn't take white pants. Overall, if you have high end brands to sell IE Banana Republic, Jones New York, don't waste your time driving there in hops of getting some moolah. read more

I am rating this business as a consignor. For the most part, I was satisfied; they were quick (I waited less than half an hour), and they ended up buying 40 of my items for $160. I was happy with the sum, but while browsing the store, I realized that Plato's may not have been the best fit for my pieces (most of which are from Anthropologie, Aritzia, Modcloth, small design houses, etc). The sales associates didn't recognize many of the brands (by no fault of their own), so I ended up getting $6 for a $300 never-worn dress, $4 for $200 jeans, etc. The associates said I brought in some of the nicest items they'd seen, so this alone tells me I should consign elsewhere in the future. My major gripe with this consigning experience, however, is the conditions my unbought items were returned in. Prior to bringing my items in, I spent a full day laundering, steaming, even dry cleaning some, and carefully folding them. By the time I brought the items back home (after an hour in a hot car), the clothes were so wrinkled that I couldn't put them back in the closet, let alone try to consign them elsewhere, without going through the entire laundering process again. They were shoddily "folded" (the same way I've seen my boyfriend haphazardly flip a t-shirt in half then mash it into a bundle before shoving it in a drawer). Especially having taken such care to ensure my items wouldn't cause the associates extra work (with steaming, ironing, etc), I was irate at how little care had been taken in re-folding them. read more

Love Plato's! After a clothing swap, a friend referred me to bring our extra clothing items and accessories to Plato's before donating them to a charity. We brought in three large bins of clothes, shoes, and accessories, which they looks through on the spot without the need to make an appointment! We wandered around until our name popped up on the board. They were quite gracious as they explained why they chose certain items and why others did not make the cut. They are definitely looking for stylish, brand name items that are in season. On another note, I found some fab funds for under $2 each! How you ask? They had a massive sale where all red tags were 90% off! I did not even believe that those sales existed. They have the sale every season so come early and get ready for some shopping. I bought three lulu tops for under $2 each and a skirt. Wicked deal. read more

I found out about Plato's Closet a few days after it opened via Yelp Shops Local (there was a pamphlet in my goodie bag). I've heard of the store via blogs I read (it's big in the US) and I had no idea there were Canadian locations. I went immediately that day and fell in love. There was SO much really great priced items in brands I love - Aritzia, Club Monaco, Loft, etc. That said, there was as much of a mix of lower quality brands (F21, H&M, Old Navy), but all the items were well curated and brands didn't seem to matter as much as the style of the pieces. Shirts were reasonably priced at around $6-$10. Pants a little more at $12 for some Garage vs $22 for Seven for all Mankind. I found a pair of beautiful Steve Madden shoes for $12. It might be a result of the store being quite new - but the next time I went several days later they had basically all the same stock. While the first time around I found 20 things to try on, the second time I found nothing because it was all the same items. I also found the selling process to be kind of awkward. They take your items, you sign them away, and then you shop while they appraise it. Theoretically they call you or find you when your appraisal is ready (since they did for everybody else) though they never did for me. I eventually had to go up and ask if they were done. The girl then handed me a bag of the things they didn't want to sell, just tossed back in the tote I brought. While I had brought everything neatly folded they had just tossed it all back in haphazardly so I now have to re-wash or iron everything I want to try to sell elsewhere (thanks for that!). They also just give you a dollar amount that they want to give you but they don't actually tell you what they're taken or itemize it in any way. Personally, I want to know, for the dollar amount, which items a store will take so I can determine if it's reasonable. When I asked the girl she showed me what they took, but I found it very strange that it wasn't a part of the process. Overall, based on two experiences, I would rate the first a 5 whereas the second only a 3 or so. The sales attendants the first day were also quite friendly, whereas the second time when I sold items they were a bit unpleasant - it seemed like a bother for them to open a change room and they weren't very helpful at all with the selling process. They have a fairly large collection of items at affordable prices - I was expecting a higher price tag for a consignment shop; however, with the low price tags there are many low quality brands that I can find at any Value Village or Goodwill shop. I was really expecting better quality clothes here similar to other clothing consignment shops. I was also very disappointed in the customer service. Aside from being greeted on entry, I was largely ignored while I was here and there were 2 employees and only one other customer. It took about 20 minutes of me looking through the racks managing other items before someone finally asked if she could start me a fitting room. read more

The customer service at the Maple Grove location is terrible. The girls working there never smile or greet the customers. They act like they are being bothered. I'm very disappointed with this shop. I work at a high end boutique in the city and had a lot of very current/recently purchased pieces to drop off. They took NOTHING, saying it was out of style. However, one of my coworkers came in a few days prior to me with some of the same pieces in different colours and they took them. The customer service was subpar and I felt that their knowledge of current trends was questionable. I'm glad that my coworker had good luck here but I certainly won't be returning. read more

A complete waste of time. I normally sell my things on Kijji but decided to give Plato's a try after a friend's recommendation. I came in with items in EXCELLENT condition (aka had been worn maybe a handful of times and in great condition). I brought in items such as a barely used $400 Marc bag, brand new Vans slip ons, a new Kate Spade wallet, a Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac ($200), a sweatshirt from Holt Renfrew. I am by no means trying to sound bourgeois however just giving context for my items. I waited forever while they vacuously and seemingly unsystematically tallied up what they would supposedly pay me. When I finally asked if they were finished (an hour later) the employee flipantly quipped "ya we've been done a while"... why would they not have told me as I was bored and tired of sifting through their abundant selection of American Eagle Tees circa 2008 . She told me that most of my items were not in suitable condition ("too much wear and tear"). But she would be willing to take the following four of my items: Marc Jacobs bag (retail $400), Kate Spade Wallet (retail $88), Vans (retail $60), and Bcbg Leggings (Retail $180). Anyway, she informed me she could give me - and I promise this number is true - $14.25. I was in such disbelief I thought I had misheard her. I immediately said no, I want the items back. I then asked where my marc bag was and she said it was "there" and when I insisted it wasn't in my bag she then said "oh actually it's in this bin". ...Okay so did you think I would just not notice and leave without it? Regardless of whether or not their incompetency is consequence of poor training, attitude or else a complete lack of knowledge, I would suggest if you have any items of value to go to a more professional consignment store that has some sort of fashion edification or else donating and shopping at your local Goodwill or other charity thrift store. read more

I find it hit and miss there for consigners depending on who is reviewing items. I find lots of the clothes in the store aren't in good condition or are knock offs. They typically don't take my nicer items (designer and higher end). You're better off taking to other consignment shops on the city (My Favourite Aunts, Vespucci). I won't sell items here anymore, it's not worth the hassle. read more
