Good selection, service varies sometimes they are rude sometimes they are nice. Biggest problem is pricing I brought in all name brand stuff and they took two shirts for 4 dollars. 2 for 4 I bought one shirt for 8 it's insane. there's almost no point of selling there. style encore gave me 27 for 4 items of clothing. Also the quality of the things they sell, one dress was made of fake leather and I touched it and it crumbled in my hands. But they refused almost 120 items of clothing of mine because of "condition" most of the clothes were hardly worn. some shirts they sell are SHEIN or completely synthetic and are put at 12 dollars - tank tops are 8 - any shirts is 10+ it's definitely a more bougie store than a thrift store. Decent shoe selection you can find good shoes there often but some are in poor condition and marked at 35$. Overall as a seller I would not recommend, go somewhere else. As a buyer occasionally you'll find a deal but if you're looking to save money goodwill is a better option! ( I understand that they buy based on what they can sell but there are other stores that say the same and actually give you a reasonable deal. ) read more

Had great experiences in the beginning for the first year I would come to sell clothes but then the last few months proceeded to get my clothes back consistently unfolded and just shoved back into my bag and then went to pick up my stuff today and the employees were talking crap about me right in front of me for bringing in repeat items for a lot of stuff that still have tags on them! Sorry we are all just trying to make money in this economy any way we can!! Did not like these girls crap talking right in front trying to be all quiet, maybe do it in your break room and not on the showroom floor or behind the counter. Called them out and the one proceeded to make an excuse saying it was about "another lady bringing in repeat items" regardless if it wasn't about me that is not cool! Horrible service and attitudes from the staff for the most part some nice girls but the recent ones being hired SUCK! and horrible selection of clothing while I'm at it whether it is what they are picking or what is being sold. Stuff is wrinkled and smells like mildew in the store. Will not be returning. read more

This is not about women's clothing in this review, rather, men's. Used clothing is a tough business. The reason I gave it four stars has to do with diligent organization, very good selection, and the frustration I feel with other used clothiers. Here is a place where you can go to the size 32 mens pants and find actual size 32 mens pants, and you won't have to go through a huge mission to find them strewn over the entire rack. The clothes do need a cursory glance, but it's very rare to find some hidden defect. This said, the prices are double+ of the thrift stores in this locale. When you get what you pay for, it's called value. They have stock in menswear where other stores don't. It's packed! Although my regret that it's for profit and not aiding a charity. I don't mind putting my money in someone's back pocket for the service and quality product they provide. Even though this seems like The People's Republic of Monroe County sometimes, some of the capitalists are earning their pay. read more

Management is horrible! They left a security tag on a pair of shorts that I purchased for my son. I called the store and was told to being them back. Living 25 minutes away as I told them I returned them to the store was told to wait outside and was treated like a criminal when I have tags and receipt to prove I purchased this item. Upon waiting ten additional minutes to have the security tag removed the tag was removed forcefully leaving a tear in son's shorts. I was also laughed at when asked for store credit or a refund. I have never been treated so rude and by Management! I may not be bringing my business back until things improve if at all...pretty disappointed! Do better!! read more

This place is racist! They don't want to say it but they only except clothing from white people or clothing that white people majority wear. If there's any clothing that looks similar to black fashion or hip-hop fashion they're not gonna accept it no matter what condition it is in. I literally have to have one of my white friends take my clothes up there and they would sell more items there if I was the one going up there and selling it! I will call ahead of time and ask what type of clothes are you guys looking for a head of time. I literally have done this as a research project for one of my sociology Capstone classes. You all are racist and you all do not deserve the black dollar I've literally tried so many times with you all on making sure I know what you guys want bringing men and women clothing in but each time I have my white friend bring in my clothes they receive way more money or way more closer getting taken then if it was me. Quality has gone down the drain in this place since 5 years ago. When I first checked out this shop 5 years ago, I was able to find many quality pieces of clothing at consignment/second-hand prices, which was great. But now the racks are all filled with cheap, generic mall brand things that I wouldn't even pay $5 for, let alone $15 for cheap, polyester, used dresses. Don't bother coming here if you want to offer them items that are new with tags. Twice now, I have carted huge boxes of clothes and shoes to them, and 90% of my things have never been worn. Most still had their original tags on them. They took maybe 10% of my items because apparently they were "too fine" so they "don't sell well". Okay, so you're telling me that people will pay $12 for a tatty used generic mall brand mini dress (I saw so many of those while I was browsing the aisles), but they won't pay $12 for a well-made business-casual dress that still has its original tags on and won't fall apart within 3 months? Dress prices, from what I saw on the racks, looked like they were grouped according to length rather than function, so essentially, a cheap polyester knee-length dress will cost the same as a knee-length chiffon prom dress, and will also cost the same as a knee-length, sturdy business dress. I get that they want to keep the store "trendy", but here's the thing -- everything that I brought in was either current within the past 2 years, or classic designs that will never go out of style. I am also in my mid-20's, so it's not as if my items are too old for the demographics of Bloomington. I don't bring in ratty things that are falling apart. I don't know about other people, but I go to consignment stores to get good deals on things for special occasions that I would rather not pay full price for, because I'll only wear it once or twice. So essentially what Plato's Closet is telling me is that they don't want quality pieces, they just want cheap pieces that probably go on clearance sales in malls for $5-10 (but you're paying $12-15 for these same pieces at Plato's Closet). I cannot even begin to count the number of ripped, or scratched, or yellowing, or pilling items that I saw on the racks while waiting for the staff to look through my things. And then when they finally called me to the counter, they told me they couldn't take most of my new-with-tags things because they "don't sell well". What a joke. Take your reselling and consignment needs elsewhere, everyone. I spent more on transporting my giant boxes of things to and from the store than what they offered me for 10% of my items in the end. I should have just donated my things to charity -- at least then I know they're going to people in need and helping those people to hopefully get a job that would help them get back on their feet, by providing them with quality clothes for interviews. read more

Great little second hand store with lots of clothing, accessories and shoes. Everything is always in great shape and almost feels new! Literally the worst. I've given this place so many chances over the years. You could take items from the current season with the tags still attached and they wouldn't take it. Every time I've been in this store, it's dirty, and unorganized. The employees are always unhelpful and unfriendly as well. Previously I thought it was just certain employees, but it never changes. The people who work here......ughhhhhh huge sigh, they aren't very welcoming or professional. I went in to look around today, and as they were going through people's clothes they were laughing and making snarky comments. Now that's pretty sad and quite rude :/ I looked through the racks to find tons of clothes that were super worn, ripped, or stained. How can they put this stuff out? And even if it happened in the store, clearly no one is checking the clothes or on quality control. Staff here needs a serious training session on both social etiquette and fashion appeal. I've sold clothes at Plato's all over dc and Virginia and had an amazing time, not this one. I've brought in $200 designer jeans before and this location offered me $1 it's laughable. They also offered me $2 for a brand new Levi's shirt which retails at $60. Then THEY TOOK A $2 SHEIN SHIRT FOR $2!! Which I absolutely promise you they'll try to sell for about $15-$20. This store is insane after reading other reviews I agree this is just a horrible store. Not to mention all the employees I talked to didn't have the best customer service they sounded condescending. I also brought in a brand new corduroy dress which they didn't even wanna take. Not to mention I get not wanting to hold things over night but being told they'll just take it without paying you if u have to work and might not be available depending on how long it'll take is just ridiculous and really unprofessional. As I was waiting on my items I walked around the aisles. The items for sale were great quality. Several name brand items available in good condition. This Plato's Closet is a good 3.5 stars at least. I'm tempted to give a four star rating to even things out, and give a score that's representative of this establishment. I love thrifting and buying second hand, so those of you familiar with thrift stores will not find this fairly organized store but densely stocked store too terribly daunting. Those of you less familiar should just keep in mind that picking through near every article of clothing is just part of the fun if you're looking to find a treasure. And trust me, you can. I rarely leave here without a great find. Lots of H&M and Urban Outfitter's brands, sometimes American Apparel, and even Vintage. I've found several surprisingly good DVDs: The Shining, Garden State, Drive, all in working used condition. The ladies who work here are sweet, even when politely declining clothes you're trying to sell. And most of them are hip and stylish to boot. Definitely the Best Plato's Closet I've ever been to. The Plato's Closet of Bloomington is my kids favorite place to shop. For a second hand store, it's well organized and has amply dressing rooms so we never had to wait. Company refused me service for not wearing a "mask". I had on a full face shield, which I have been wearing all during the pandemic, in multiple cities and states and have NEVER been questioned/stopped/refused entrance, even in a medical setting! An employee told me that their county did not allow face shields, only masks. This is false. read more

You can always find such amazing pieces here, and the big selection means there's something for every style! I've been able to get awesome vintage Levi's jackets, and also NWT Reformation and All Saints. For selling, the prices are always really fair. You have to remember that they're offering cash on the spot. For your really high end items you could probably get more on eBay or something, but their pricing is transparent and makes total sense. The staff is friendly, the clothes are cute and well priced, and they buy very fairly. They stick to a high school/college demographic usually as that is what sells in this area. This is also one of the cleanest and most well organized second hand stores hands down. I don't always find something but I usually do! It's hard to judge a resale shop since a lot of people leave reviews when they are bitter they weren't able to sell clothes... just make sure you ask what they are looking for and bring in accordingly! read more

I went in today to sell clothes and no one greeted me until I was finished filling out the papers. I decided to look around while they were going through my things, I over heard them talking while going through other peoples clothes they brought in. Saying I know what she looks like just by what she brought in, I bet she's a hoe. That was very inappropriate in front of customers. I had also brought in a Michael Kors bag to sell but they couldn't take it because they couldn't tell if it was real or not because the tags weren't with it, mind you they were in one of the pockets! This store is AMAZING. I can always find amazing deals in here! They have lots of great stuff from "normal" brands, like American eagle, Hollister, H&M etc, but also have lots of Urban Outfitters stuff that is so much cheaper than the ridiculous prices they charge at Urban. And I've been in there a few times when they've had designer clothing items still cheaper (or the same price), as buying a new mall brand item. For example, they had an Acne Studios short sleeve that they were selling for $14, new with tags that retailed for like $300. Thats just crazy cool. Love this place and would recommend it to anyone, it's the best way to dress how you want and look great, while still staying on budget. read more
