We just left Hugo's Mexican Restaurant in Red Oak, Texas, and unfortunately our experience was…read moredisappointing this time. We had to send our queso back because the meat tasted old. It was replaced with ground beef, which tasted much better. What also stood out was that the manager, Chris, walked around greeting every table except ours. We noticed he continued greeting other guests as people came and went, and as an African American family, it made us feel uncomfortable and overlooked. This is not the kind of experience we are used to at Hugo's. Previous managers have always been welcoming and treated everyone fairly, which is one reason we've continued supporting this restaurant over the years. The food was also mediocre compared to past visits and definitely did not taste the same. We have never sent food back before and really hated having to do so, but we didn't want to risk getting sick. We do plan to return because Hugo's has always been known for good food and great customer service. We just hope Chris was simply having an off day, or that improvements are made so every customer feels equally welcomed and valued.

Zucchs, on 342 in Red Oak, across from the High School, is a sister restaurant to the popular…read morebreakfast and lunch restaurant "Gravy and More" (in the shopping area located behind it), so I was NOT surprised when they dropped off two small slices of very buttery zucchini bread for us to start the meal. What DID surprise me was the interior of Zucchs. We were told to seat ourselves in a restaurant that had very interesting twinkle lighting against a mostly dark interior. We decided to sit against a far wall in a booth and were greeted by a very charming waitress who told us all about the menu and Zucchs. Zucchs is listed as a $10 - $20 range dining experience. I believe this menu now reflects our changed economy with entrees nearly all greater than $20 and burgers and sandwiches greater than than $15. Salads with a protein $15 - $24. Desserts $13. Sides were very reasonable. My husband and I both ordered burgers. I ordered the All American Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and hold the mayo for me, add extra pickles! ($12.50) He ordered the Western Bacon Cheeseburger with Bacon, iceberg, tomato, onion rings and a side of BBQ sauce ($16.50) I didn't have to have fries as my side. I could choose from a list of 12 sides! Now you're talking. I chose the onion rings, my favorite with a burger. Our burgers arrived looking great, hot and yet I don't understand why they can't melt the cheese. Sigh. The Burger, otherwise, was terrific. Nicely toasted, thoroughly dressed, gave me everything I wanted plus delicious onion rings instead of French fries. My husband's BBQ sauce was spicy sweet and yummy. Great with the onion rings. I had heard, even read, that Zucchs was Red Oak's new upscale restaurant. But what I was hearing in a nearly empty restaurant was intrusive overly loud Country music and it remained that way for most of the time we were there. Yes. I should have spoken up. Now Zucchs is also billed as comfort food, American food for diverse tastes. I see nothing about the exterior or any marketing that says country. This tells me when it's nearly empty, the chef preference is country. Loud Country. Five stars for the Charming, thorough and sweet service though. She made sure we had everything, I mean everything we needed. All in all, we enjoyed our meal and would return. There's adequate parking and plenty of distanced tables and booths. Even a private dining room. There's a drive thru now, too!

I ordered the California Burrito, to go - for lunch the next day, and it was pretty good. I made the 30 minute trip from Dallas, because of my previous experience, to try the Super Nachos...and get another California Burrito. The nachos were made of the same tortillo chips that come with the complimentary chips and salsa, which are quite thin. The grilled chicken was good but accompanied by beans, cheese, and pico, made the tortilla chips soggy. My plate was a mess within seconds of eating. The staff seems friendly, but I noticed that the young lady who waited on me, took my order, brought my food to me, and then never stopped by to check on me, even though I was only one of two customers in the restaurant on Thursday night. She did the same thing on Saturday night, even with my being right next to another table she was working. I had to get her attention to order my burrito to go. I was only in town for a trucking orientation and saw the great reviews on Yelp, so I took a chance on this place. If I'm in town, I'd try them again, but I won't get nachos unless they use thicker tortilla chips.

Bar area is dark & had TVs blaring loud with FIFA on. We would have watched FIFA but also wanted to be able to hear each-other so we went in the separate restaurant area which was light & comfortable. We were immediately brought chips, salsa, & a mild cheese sauce. The chips were thick & not too salty. The cheese sauce was good and unexpected. The salsa had a strange twang to it - couldn't eat it. (Wasn't sure if it was supposed to be that way or spoiled). My Mom got and enjoyed a small tortilla soup. Lunch specials during the week for $9.99 I got the #31 Guadalajara plate- chicken quesadilla, ground beef tostada, & rice & beans. Rice and beans were cold. Guacamole tasted packaged. It's a pretty decent size restaurant with two seating sections and a bar with a lot of decor. We arrived before the rest of the party and were seated and drink orders taken and the server was friendly. I ordered the chicken fried steak plate with two eggs over easy, hash browns and it came with two biscuits and a side of gravy. I was actually surprised how good it was as I have been before and it wasn't the greatest. The chicken fried steak was seasoned nicely with a good breading. The hash browns were seasoned well and the biscuits were nice and soft with a side of gravy to top it off. My only complaint was the eggs were over done but it was still a good a good meal. I was able to taste the menudo which for me needed more hominy and a bit more seasoning. There aren't many great options for dining out in Waxahachie but this place is a decent one for the area. Our cocktails were all good - and the appetizers were very good. We had the crispy pork belly and the tostaditas with barbacoa. The crispy pork belly was especially delicious and I would order as my own dinner in the future. It comes with onions and sauces and corn tortillas and it's to die for - so crispy and flavorful. We ordered the Bistec enchiladas and they were good but not as good as the appetizers. They give you a variety of sauces when you're seated that you keep throughout the meal - from mild to spicy but I would say the "spicy" is on the mild side. Still good and flavorful but not unapproachable for most ppl. We had the Campechana dessert and it was a little strange. It was basically a vanilla Icecream cake with a crispy waffle cone like layering that was really hard to break until it sat a while. It was oddly addicting but also not that good? I can't explain it. We went to the cigar lounge area after dinner and had Mexican espresso martinis and watched football before heading home. There was little smoke smell but very minimal until it got later. Around 8:30 (on a Saturday night) ppl started smoking cigars and they opened the side windows and being 90degrees right now - it became less enjoyable so we decided to end the night. In the fall that room would probably be quite lovely with the windows open. They have comfortable seating and fire pits. Really more of a 4.5 out of 5. Loved the decor near the restrooms and patio too.
