James is the real deal. This is an old school barber shop. He's been there for more than 40 years. You don't stay in business that long without being good. Good conversation? good haircut. I'll be back. read more

I guess that James is a busy one man shop. Good conversation and a reasonably priced haircut at $ 18.00. Family business for more than fifty years. Get your ears lowered here. Probably a good idea to set an appointment but he was able to fit me in after a short wait. read more

Scheduled a appointment with James and I'm very impressed with his ability to keep a conversation going with everybody in the shop and make them feel like home when you walk in!! Got my fade quick and easy he had me out less than 30 minutes!!! Best in Plano!!! read more

Been getting my hair cut here since I can remember. No muss & no fuss - just perfect every time. read more

James cut my husband's hair and this wife approves! James is such a nice man and while I was waiting and witnessing him deal with a rambunctious little boy, I would not hesitate to take my boy to see him either! He was so good with the fidgety little one! Highly recommend! read more

I can only assume that my experience only happened because I'm a white guy and the barber (only guy there) assumed some immediate form of kinship. I mean, in that regard, he's a nice dude.... In the span of my wait and haircut, he joked about covid, was a bit mysoginist, called somebody retarded for acting strange, and openly communicated that he thinks all homeless people are lazy and that most mental health concerns and addiction is self-inflicted. He did happen to have a number of loyal customers and he knew them all in detail. I think that's pretty cool, but far too many lines were crossed. I give the actual haircut a 6/10 read more

A great place to get a haircut! James also tells the funniest stories! When you need a serious haircut, Plano Barber is the only place to go. read more

Great place! James is awesome and always makes you feel at home. And the price is the best around.

I have visited Plano barbers. The first two were as a walk-in the third was with an appointment. On all three occasions James gave me an excellent haircut and the service was excellent. read more

Excellent barber!! Courteous, I recommend him highly! He's even gives me a lollipop with each visit!

James is the man! At one time James was cutting hair for four generations of my family. if you a looking for a great haircut and an old school barber James will take great care of your needs. His location in downtown Plano is convenient to several shops and restaurants. read more

I originally started coming here in the 1990's with my dad and now I'm bringing my son here. James does a really great job, he's awesome with kids, and is just a really good person. I'm always happy with the haircuts I've gotten here and with how I'm treated read more

First time getting a haircut here. Great barber and looks like a lot of people in the community come based on the interactions I overheard in the shop. Will definitely return. read more

James is his own original slice of Texas. I absolutely love his demeanor and his style. He's compassionate, friendly and his take no BS approach to life is refreshing, he's honest, sometimes charming and often inspiring. He's an old school barber in every way. He values public safety people and the military. He's absolutely great with children and he looks after his customers, he's also a very charitable and giving man. My only concern is that once he sees this review he's likely to cut one of my ears off for ruining his tough guy reputation. If you liked the barber in the movie Grand Torino you'll absolutely love James Russell and The Plano Barbers! read more

My family moved to Texas four months ago. I've been scalped and razor cut at the brand name chains three times since so I was a little gun shy about getting a hair cut, but needed a clean up. Researched and found James. From the moment I walked in the door he welcomed me, confirmed what I wanted and did an amazing job of reclaiming my shaggy swag. Getting a little older he even knew to trim my eyebrows without question. I will be back and will bring my son. Thankful to have found genuine barber!! read more

I'm in the service and hospitality industry and I rely on having a consistent look for work. I've had struggles everywhere I've gone, feeling like I was rolling the dice on how my hair would turn out. About a year ago, I found this gem. James Russell Jr. is the man. My hair has been rock solid. It took just one visit and he remembered my name and my haircut preferences. Not only that, he gives back to the community. I feel really blessed that I know him. read more

The owner is one of the nicest barbers I have met. Fast, efficient, and great stories! I'll come back. Since I just had a crew cut, he only charged me $10 vs the normal $14 read more

If there was a ZERO star option, I had checked it. My husband just came back from here and he looked horrible! He has been there a few times and it was always still on the verge of OK, but today really was the final straw. He looked like a monk! Like somebody put a cooking pot on his head and cut around it at the bottom. Come on people! Don't you have pride in your craft? What some people have written here about that the place is funny and their antics... yes, I've heard it before from my husband. But isn't the first and foremost thing a good or at least decent haircut you go for into this business? If the antics and funny stories (if they are funny... I can't tell) come on top of it ... great... makes the ambiance. But a good quality craft should come first. My hubby is going somewhere else right this moment hoping to get it fixed. He has had a very hard time to find a real good barber shop in Plano. Guess it's an almost extinguished species?! read more

Ah what an enjoyable morning while getting a haircut. James seems like the old school barber that will make you smile and reminisce of the old days. This place has character and is very welcoming. No one who walks in is a stranger and I guess that's what I enjoyed along with a wonderful haircut and a good trim of this gruff on my face. Btw you also get some nice lollipops when you're done read more

Just moved (back) to Plano. Great barber shop. James is great! I walked in on a Saturday morning, and it was worth the wait. This is the place if you are looking for a real barber shop in Plano. read more

The barber refused to do what I asked and cut my hair the way that HE deemed was best. Terrible service and the worst haircut I've ever received read more

I look at some of the reviews here, and I'm shocked that there are any negative ones. I've been going to Plano Barbers for 31 years now (yes, I guess that makes me an "old fart"), and I have to say that this is truly what you would consider an "old school" barber shop. If you want a great haircut, at a good price, along with some good conversation, this is where you want to go. Randy is a down to earth, great guy. He takes an interest in you and your family, and you really get to know him, as much as he likes to get to know you. I've gone to other locations while traveling, only to regret not waiting until I got home. If you have a negative experience here, you probably deserved it!!! Bill L read more

Great hospitality as soon as you enter. I have to highest respect for this shop and I recommend to anyone who would like a classic haircut and a great conversation. First Responders and Military men and woman friendly. read more

I love this place. Call ahead and make a reservation. Is it the cheapest barbershop you can find? No. But! It is old fashioned family business in an excellent way. The barber is a knowledgeable conversationalist and can recommend all sorts of businesses and services for just about anything, and the cuts themselves are of a solid, no nonsense quality. Hot tip: he occasionally also has doughnuts on the weekend + this place is a favorite of a hodgepodge between older private and public sector professionals and law enforcement types, so you run into a decent, safe, and polite crowd. read more

I've been having James cut my hair for the last 7 years or so. His shop is what it's named...a barber shop. I don't need anything fancy done to my hair, I just sit down, let him cut and enjoy the conversations. Don't expect recommendations about conditioner or styling gel... Big hint - always call in advance and get an appointment. If he's got you down for a certain time, he'll bypass walk-ins so that he's meeting his commitment. If you walk in, you may find yourself watching people stroll in who have an appointment and be served while you wait for a gap to be worked in. About James - he can be kind of gruff but it's more that he's totally honest about what he thinks. You may agree, you may disagree, but he's straight forward about his point of view. I honestly like it best when there are a few customers all bantering back and forth. (Note: I see a ton of reviews attached to his place that are about Finley's. This is not Finley's. I don't know if that's several people making the same mistake or a Yelp issue) read more

I've been going to James for nearly 30 years. When I first moved here I was complaining to a coworker about family salons. I was looking for a good old fashioned barber. He pointed me to Plano Barbers. Great haircuts at a fair price. read more

Best place in the entire state to get your haircut at! Confirmed!

Really nice guy and I know he means well, but I also had an issue with him cutting my hair they we HE deemed fit instead of what I asked for. He's very experienced, but very niche. Definitely avoid this place if you want a fade of any kind. Worst haircut I've gotten in years read more

It's a step back in time. Sorta like Floyd's in Mayberry but with some good swearing. I have been going to this institution since I moved to Dallas a couple of years ago and not just for a decent haircut. You want to know what is going on in politics, with the economy, Cowboy's football or if there is life on Mars? This is the place. The two brothers who run Plano Barbers are nothing short of cowboy poets with sheers. Sure there is a wait on Saturday mornings. But pull up a chair, pretend to read Maxum magazine, and tune in to the best opinionated gossip and smack anywhere. If a woman does happen to wander in with some kids, they do manage the expletives. As for the cut, they always do a good job and the price is quite a value (especially with the floor show). Its my Saturday oasis from the ordinary. . . as far as haircuts go. read more

Went here to get my beard shaved off. The service was prompt, friendly and humorous. James was my barber and he was excellent. I expected to pay the full haircut price, but to my surprise and delight James only charged me 3 dollars, I gave him 5 and went on my way. I will be back. A great place for mens styling needs. read more

My husband will go nowhere else. He has been going to these guys about 6 years now and always comes home laughing at some story that was told or antics the guys had gotten into. It puts him in a good mood on a Saturday morning and that makes asking for Honey-Do's to get done SO much easier. read more

I tried Plano barbers after reading the reviews. While the service was friendly I was not very impressed with the cut. I was hopeful as this place had the feel of a "real" barber shop. However upon entering the seat I was quickly disappointed. I get a simple cut using the mechanical clippers. I felt like I was a sheep being sheared. The gentleman was very rough. I was also not happy in that the clippers was used to trim the neck. Is there any place that uses a razor anymore. I won't be returning to this establishment. read more

If you want a stylist go somewhere else. This is a real barber. H's been here forever for a reason. If you are in Plano and need a haircut You won't get a better one. read more

James is great.. He is quick and will bend over backwards to help anyone. He remembers his clients and what is going on in thier lives. I read a review about him being racist. THAT IS FALSE. He definitely is a man that looks at individuals character, not race or ethnicity. Been going there every 2 weeks for a year. Spent my first 6 months in texas getting bad haircuts from other overpriced "barbers ". read more

After leaving my old barber from 2 years of business, this place has definitely won me over. Immediate service, perfect customer hospitality, and a complimentary beer! Ask for Veronica and you'll definitely have a fresh clean cut. read more

If you're looking for a great haircut from a barber you can't go wrong here. James Russell will free hand a flat top haircut without a pair of scissors in about 12 minutes if you don't ask him about politics or football. Add another 10 minutes if you do and be prepared to get some interesting conversation. Great guy. Great shop. read more

My husband has been going to James for 6 or 7 years now, and we've been taking my sons for the last 3. I won't take them anywhere else. They are 5 and 2 years old. James has a way with kids - bribe them with a sucker but be stern and firm the rest of the time. I'm okay with a little bribery if it works as well as this has. I can't speak to the quality of cuts that the former barber Randy used to give because we never used him. We've only ever been to James, and he does a great job. I will say to anyone who goes home with an unsatisfactory cut that what you get out of James or any barber is what you ask of him. If you don't explain what you want well enough or point something out that you don't like, he can't fix it. On the other hand, I've always been able to get good cuts on both boys who have very different thicknesses and types of hair. And these are squirmy little kids. Furthermore, when my husband comes home with something I'm not fond of, it's because he likes it that way and that's what he asked for. I've never heard James make any derogatory comments regarding anyone of any race and if memory serves, he's included everyone in his fun stories in a good way. Now political disagreements... it is a barber shop. read more

I asked this guy for two specific and simple things. To cut my hair with a number 2 clipper and to make a straight line around my head. He did neither. He cut it with a number 1 and cut a straight line as well as a 5 year old. This is absurd. I will never go back to this place. Note: He was very friendly - just incompetent. read more

I've seen a couple of bad reviews for this place, and I have to do some defense, as this place has always treated me right. For starters, I was a regular for about 5 years before I joined the Air Force, and I always stop in for a good post-leave haircut the day before or day I fly back. About 20 of the Air Force patches on the wall are from me, as this is the first place I want to end them. There used to be two barbers, James and Randy. Randy left about a year or so ago, and James has been running the place on his own since. It's a workload for him, and he still refuses to take payment from me since I'm military....I had to fight with him in January to take payment for my sons haircut. Great atmosphere. As a lot of people have mentioned, this is a place pulled straight out of Andy Griffith, with a modern touch. James knows no strangers. As for the haircut...mind you, I'm military. Clean on the sides and a little off the top, and I'm good. If you're looking for a true styled haircut, I'd recommend elsewhere, as James normally ends up doing basic men's cuts, which he's great at. read more
