Planet is a store full of odds and ends that scream hip, dirty fashion and Durham...I mean Wilmington (just reminds me of a Durham, NC/Boulder, CO crowd). If you are in the mood for original t-shirts, summer dresses, raunchy bumper stickers, gem jewelry, fake aviator shades or a bench NOT made for sitting. I've been attracted into Planet on almost every visit to Wilmington and haven't been disappointed. It's cute, a quick stop, and if you're looking to but something, there's so much variety, it's hard not to see something that catches your eye. In 15 minutes I found and tried on 2 dresses and 3 shirts. I purchased 4/5 items and added a vintage necklace. The two tops I purchased would pair with a suit for work or jeans after hours. The dresses were fun and flirty with great prints and flattering cuts. They had a variety of super casual to date night and a few items appropriate to supplement your career wardrobe. I didn't have much time to browse but the sales woman was very friendly and helpful. I would love to come back and browse the nifty gifties! read more

Shopping for nik-naks is totally not in my wheelhouse. I feel like the world would be a better place if it wasn't filled up with gag gifts and other useless crap that gets a chuckle every now and then, but more or less is just future landfill fodder. So honestly, I expected to not like Planet at all. Color me pleasantly surprised. While Planet does have a certain amount of cliche'd, humorous gift-y stuff, they also stock an interesting collection of local T-shirts, vintage gear, and assorted randomness. Enough to make the shopping experience interesting. I spent about 3x the amount of time that I originally expected browsing the aisles here. This shop is definitely worth a stop if you have time to kill or need to bring home a North Cackalack shirt for some friends as a gift. read more

Planet is the perfect name for this little shop in downtown Wilmington as you start asking yourself, "What Planet am I on???" The window dressing is intriguing enough to pull you in as it has some modern clothing with a vintage flair. When you go inside, it can be a bit overwhelming at first. There is a long table with trinkety/novelty type items that can make any OCD/neat freak want to run and hide, but after you start going through them, you realize it's a bit fun as the novelties are all sort of old school and not like a sale bin at Spencer's. Along the outsides and towards the back are the clothing goods. They have vintage tees for hubs, and some dressed and blouses for me. In the very back, there are some shoes and a clearance rack. I scored a skirt and a blouse for under $50...not too shabby. The staff is hospitable but seems a little "too cool" to want to offer help. No biggie. read more

Very cute store. Lots of fun gifts and clothes. I really like the jewelry and magnets that they keep near the register. In the back, they have some vintage (garage sale?) items that can be expensive. I would give them 5 stars, but the cashiers always seem incredibly rude and condescending, and they make me feel bad for making a purchase. How do you describe a store like Planet? Well, I don't really know (yup, that does not bode well for this review). It's "one of a kind" or some other cliche like that, and you just have to check it out so you too can be left speechless. Basically, the shop houses a glorious and somewhat random assortment of the funny, wacky, and weird in the form of little toys, vintage clothing, magnets, jewelery, lunchboxes, old school military paraphernalia, gas masks, postcards, and other knick knacks. Essentially, it's all a bunch of stuff you probably don't need but somehow you end up convincing yourself that your life will somehow bettered should you purchase those bacon strip band-aids. Or at the very least you find yourself living vicariously through the recipients of all the stocking stuffers or random gifts for others you can find here. Planet is also seemingly quite dedicated to selling the wares of local artists and musicians which is very cool. Think a local version of Urban Outfitters on a very small scale ... and that gives you some idea of what they have. It's the sort of store that is prefect for stocking stuffers, or random small gifts. You go in there to browse the fun gag gifty type items and them you find yourself browsing the clothes as well. The store itself is relatively small, but what it lacks in size it make up for it personality. It definitely embodies that emo - indie - local vibe, but in the best possible way. Since NOFO closed out allot of their gift line you are just as likely to find Wilmington's latest hipster shopping here along side the local Junior League President - that is to say, everyone is welcome here and should feel comfortable and find something worthy of fighting downtown for a much coveted after parking space. I say it almost "out of this world" but then I'd feel like a complete tosser, so let just leave it at it's worth the effort. read more

I did a bit of Christmas shopping here because I know I will find unique items that people will really enjoy! The eclectic mix of kitsch and earthy, military and hipster really is a winner! The handmade items at the counter are worth a look too! I got myself a nice necklace and earrings set, my friend a handcrafted hat made in Peru (it's a zombie... LOVE) and picked up a British military sweater for my husband. Did I mention I love this store? I can ALWAYS find something in there. So i've always loved this shop since middle school, but lately it seems they've done a lot more outsourcing and their products have become a lot cheaper and mostly tourist junk ): when i was younger they would sell things made by local artists, lately when i go in everything has been drop shipped from china, matched with some aggressive political posters at the back. the posters at the back used to all be rock n roll band posters ): no good anymore read more

Strolling through downtown Wilmington, this store is a must! While we were there, we were caught in a pretty terrible storm but it gave us the chance to really take in all that this cute boutique has to offer. From one of a kind clothing, local creations, gag gifts and political statements to vintage finds, support for our lgbt community and everyday knick-knacks. This store is worth the stop. And the employee was super chill about us lingering because of the storm and offered up some small talk which I can appreciate. Although Wilmington isn't known by many, this store should. I'm not into Urban Outfitters and although there clothing represents them in such a way, this store is rad. Where else can you find gas masks, MDC tshirts, cute lace dresses and sushi wallets under one roof? This place has something for everyone with great deals to be had. If Chicago had one of these the prices would be much higher and there wouldn't be any merchandise left. But since it's in Wilmington the prices are low and the merchandise abounds for both men and women. read more

There's a lot of ugly and pointless stuff in here but lots of cute and practical stuff as well. Among the tacky tie-dye clothes and gas masks I found a basic top nice enough to wear to work along with two gorgeous, handmade fabric pouches that I'm using as cases for my camera and iPod. In my opinion, Planet is the best place to shop in Wilmington. Not only do they have amazing clothing, hats, accessories, and painting/photographs by local artist; they also have the snazziest chachkas at very low prices. It is nearly impossible not to walk out of this shop with something you did not know you needed until you saw it. Eccentric socks, deeply discounted military jackets, hats, magnets, etc. Planet is such a unique experience to the casual shopper. The chain stores lack the personality this store has.
