The Cotton Exchange holds a lot of history in its eight 19th-century buildings. Each of the eight brick buildings originally served a different industrial purpose. For instance, the Sprunt building started as a flour mill and a hominy mill. The structure was renovated in 1919 and became the central trading office for cotton bales, eventually growing into one of the world's largest and busiest cotton-exporting companies. The bales left the Cape Fear River port's docks to be shipped directly to England, Europe, and other parts of the United States, and remained fully operational until 1950. After the shipping port declined, the complex was abandoned and deteriorated to the point that it was scheduled for complete demolition. Fortunately, local developers stepped in to save the buildings, preserving the original architecture, heart pine beams, and exposed brickwork. The marketplace officially opened in 1976. It was the very first successful "adaptive reuse" historic preservation project in the state. Today, the Cotton Exchange is a wonderful, bustling mixture of locally owned restaurants and specialty shops. While exploring the multi-level halls, I really enjoyed viewing the built-in hallway exhibits filled with vintage photographs, educational storyboards, and antique tools tracing the complex's port history. I have since learned of a few treasures I missed while visiting, so I am already planning a return trip to find the rest and explicitly check out the Wilmington Walk of Fame installation out in the courtyards! Didn't really see any shops that interested me here. Of those I did stop into, the people were friendly, but the prices were a bit overboard. And I was surprise with the lack of local goods (eg olive oil place is all imported but no info on the labels). I parked in their lot because I figured I would easily find something I'd like, support local, and validate my parking. Probably could have enjoyed a light meal here but not my kind of place - too tourist trappy. read more

The Cotton Exchange is a small collective of small busineses. It has cafes, a nail shop, a salon and several clothing boutiques. It has a real quaint few. I did get a workout walking to the top floor and exiting out to Front Street. I just love the small town feel. read more

A quaint area to shop near the river. The cotton exchange history and old buildings are a favorite of mine to visit. The shops and restaurants frequently change and it's always nice to see the new shops. Shop owners are very friendly and hospitable. There are restaurants, cafes, clothing, jewelry, paper, furniture shops and more. We always find something new and intriguing. This sweet collection of stores and restaurants is located downtown near the river walk but not on it. The building is clearly marked so easy to walk from the river. There are many different kinds of shops, everything from a nail salon to clothing. I enjoyed going from level to level in this old but interesting building full of history. read more

Very cool place! All the little shops and restaurants are very eclectic and adorable. The only bad thing was the parking. It's pay to park but there is no price posted anywhere. We parked for 3 hours and 10 minutes and were charged $28!! Ridiculous!! Save yourself some money and park in the parking garage across the street, 3 hours would have been $6 there. read more

The Cotton Exchange looks pretty unassuming from the outside, but it is enormous inside with a large variety of shops and restaurants inside. The building inside is beautiful with high arches and old brick. The signs inside the walkways are posted frequently so you can easily navigate. Cute little shops and food options are available, so you have many options once you enter. Entrances are located at both ends of the building so fairly quick to navigate through and see what catches your interest. Worth a stop to check this spot out if you're nearby. read more

Came to visit mid-December 2023 on a Tuesday. I think I need to try this place again maybe during the peak season. The stores are quiet and there weren't many store options that I was particular interested in. The location is a neat historic site to visit though. I appreciated the markers that gave info about what existed there originally. They building itself is beautifully preserved. I appreciate Wilmington preserving a historical place for everyone to appreciate. I think I'll have to come by here another day and time. Try to get street parking if possible. The meter police is walking by. Download the app and pay for your parking on the app to keep track of your time. read more

Wilmington Cotton Exchange- We visited Carolina Beach and my husband wanted me to experience the Cotton Exchange. We were nrvous too many things would be closed, but we drove up to Wilmington anyway and I'm so glad we did! Plenty of stores were open and it was really the best day. The cotton exchange is such a unique experience and a very cool, charming complex. No elevators, right? Make your way through the 8 buildings and different levels and enjoy a fun day of shopping at exclusive boutiques. I love that they don't have franchise stores or restaurants in the Cotton exchange. We picked up a beautiful photograph print, some gourmet olives and vinegars, a few other handmade artisan crafts for gifts, and a beach cover up. I love the history of the building and love that restoration attempts have kept that antiquity in tact. I wish the book store had been open, though! I don't think they have a page yet, so I'll review here... after shopping and dinner, we decided to book the Escape Room on the lower level. It was the most immersive, clever escape room experience we've ever done. I highly recommend the Forgotten room, it was a real treat! read more

Old historic warehouse turned into shopping venue. Many different stores to wander around in and look at frivolous necessities. Shoes, vintage clothing, stationary, art, and so much more. They have a parking lot that you pay for minutes but can get up to 3 hours free by validating your ticket at one of the shops inside. read more

This is one of my favorite tourist spots in Wilmington. They have fabulous shops and restaurants. It is so unique and unlike any other place I have ever been. We spent hours here today. I love how parking is free when you are shipping/eating here. They have a few restrooms open to the public if needed, too. I love the set up and the courtyard in the middle. Awesome place for shopping, eating, and hanging out. Located in downtown Historic Wilmington, the Cotton Exchange definitely has history and character. The small business shops that make up the Cotton Exchange are unique and add even more character to the shopping experience. I did the majority of my Christmas shopping the weekend I was in town for the inaugural Half Marathon race (early December), but I was glad this location was super walk-able from my hotel. It definitely made for an interesting check-out process since it felt like I left with 3 times as much mass and shopping bags when I was ready to head home. There's a little something for everyone here, coffee shop, artwork, NC local shop, t-shirts, memorabilia, toys, and even a shop for the four-legged family members. Multiple levels... it can be a little bit of a maze, but I really like how they kept the integrity of the building and the shop owners really settle into their own spaces to offer their products. I didn't really see any elevators, so watch your step on the stairs and narrow corridors. In the main staircase there was one of those electric chairs on the side for people that can't do stairs so I'm sure the exchange is in compliance for handicap standards. read more

This is a great place and a must to visit while visiting Wilmington. There are multiple levels with plenty of stores and variety for all ages and types. I loved the vintage appeal with both new and old items. Lots of wind chimes and other decorations for your home. All the stores where open and clean. Only a few had bathrooms available, so just a heads up. There are a couple of restaurants in the building, but I did not try any since I had just eaten down the street. I was going to give 4 stars, but the available parking was such a bonus I went five! Seriously, a huge parking lot available. I am not sure how packed it gets on the weekends, but during the week days ample parking and access to stores is very easy! read more

Cotton Exchange in Wilmington has a great selection of stores, restaurants and historic memorabilia near the Riverfront. There are about three levels and you end up on Front Street. I liked the Pure Nature shop for smoothies and enjoyed the spice shop and other little boutiques. read more

Built within abandoned roaring 20's cotton warehouses and processing buildings, the Cotton Exchange is a mall of an eclectic assortment of medium to high end stores that offer restaurants, clothing, jewelry, books, kites, gourmet food stuffs, candy, art, shoes, etc. This is not a South Coast Plaza sized mall, but only about 32 stores nestled in downtown Historic Wilmington. Jaded mall goers will find this a refreshing break from the monotony of todays super this and that stores. Each store is unique and not one is a chain. Highly recommended if you are anywhere close to this area.......and if you like to shop. read more

I love the stores down here but unfortunately it isn't handicap or elderly friendly. I had such a hard time maneuvering around with my senior patient who needs a wheelchair. We enjoyed the stores but sadly had to fold up her chair and walk up the stairs, this was very inconvenient and hard on older people. read more

Something for everyone. Small merchants are all very warm and welcoming in the downtown historic district in Wilmington, NC. Plenty of walking to consider with the heat or if traveling with someone that might have mobility issues. The downtown shops have unique hours most are not open until 11am. Something to consider when looking for parking and to grab a cup of joe and relax. Luckily, there is a parking lot for the Cotton Exchange. The meter attendants monitor the street parking. Who carries quarters nowadays? The meters should be able to take $1 bills, luckily for tourists and merchants they can pay via smartphone. read more

Stand-outs include TS Brown's Jewelry shop and Cape Fear Fine Craft cooperative, but there's also more than one spot to scoop up a not SO touristy momento if needed. We visited downtown Wilmington for the day, and the Cotton Exchange was definitely on our agenda. This used to be an old cotton gin and is now a place full of excitement. They have made this multi-level historic building into a place filled with local vendors, shops, a coffee shop, and restaurant. I return to the Cotton Exchange every time I'm in the area. The prices are reasonable, and you're supporting local artists and farmers. Everything is hand-crafted and has a special "local" feel to it. This place is a must see! read more

While I agree with SOME of the sentiment about this being a tourist trap, that doesn't take away from the quality of some of the shops and restaurants here. While I wouldn't want to do the bulk of my shopping at the Cotton Exchange, it's a terrific place to browse, have a meal, have a cup of joe, maybe grab a t-shirt and get a few pictures. Full of history in what looks like an old warehouse boasting lots of local shops with unique stuff one doesn't see anywhere else, at solid prices. This is a great place to walk around and checkout wilmington. This particular shopping center is very interesting in that it's integrated into a historic building. It's a good place to stop to shop. They have a potpurri of different stores. If you're on vacation they have one of those tacky souvenir shops as well. It's located in a strange spot and below from the other stores. Also, you can park here for free as long as you bring your receipt to be validated. read more

We had breakfast at The Basics .. it was good.. I liked that they took extra measures with hand sanitizer when we came in and had us wait outside to be greeted and they wore masks as well as reminded us customers to please do the same while moving about the restaurant. I ordered the 2 egg breakfast with the blueberry oatmeal pancakes and sausage patties for my sides! The pancakes were so good I wished it had more blueberries though.. they were so big I shared them with my sister and mom! I could only eat one .. the fried green tomatoes my sister ordered were good too! We only visited a few shops and we wanted to explore more but were short on time.. got some great little souvenirs to remember our trip I purchased some incense from India in one shop and sea glass beads and some cute charms in another! We loved the vibe of the place and the prices were not too bad either.. there's something for everyone! We plan to definitely go back and explore the rest of the shops and restaurants soon! The Cotton Exchange is a nice jumping off spot to any stroll through downtown Wilmington. It is easily accessible with plenty of parking out back, features over 20 stores, and is a stone's throw from the river. The best part of the Cotton Exchange, however, is clearly the history of the buildings that comprise this now mini shopping mecca. I believe the buildings were at one point a flour mill and then later served as the cotton production center of Wilmington. As such, all the buildings are connected by old school staircases and walkways with open courtyards abounding as well. This space just oozes a romantic type of history that is difficult not to get lost in as you stroll about. Nowadays you'll find jewelry stores, art houses, restaurants, a coffee spot, a bookstore, a Celtic shop, and a super touristy shop all housed within these rustic walls. The Cotton Exchange is always worth a visit, just be sure to move your car after hours or you will indeed be ticketed! (I learned that the hard way) read more
