Planet Pethood is a nice little pet food store at 43rd & Tennyson, right next door to Wine Jesters (the new little wine shop in the neighborhood). The store has various brands and types of pet food, treats, and toys. She also has a few adoptable cats and dogs that were obviously given up by their uncaring people parents. The owner is a vet tech and a vegetarian, and she seems to care deeply about animals. The shop is not as big or as fancy as Mouthfuls pet boutique down the street but it carries the dog food we buy. Nature's Variety is a great natural dry dog food. Our dog loves all the flavors... and while it is more expensive than grocery store dog food, because the food has less cheap "fillers", dogs actually eat less than they would of other "cheaper" brands. This small and very adorably designed pet store in the Highlands area combines a charming retail space with a passion for rescued animals. You can view animals available for adoption- usually cats or small dogs- every day during store hours. The store owner describes Planet Pethood as, "a politically correct pet store." I can't justify giving any less than four stars to a cute shoppette that combines support for pet adoption and rescue with a fairly nice selection of foods, treats, toys, leashes, and everything you need for your dog or cat; and Planet Pethood fully deserves the four stars it's getting. I do, however, have some minor gripes. For starters, both the store itself and the website are unclear on exactly what Planet Pethood's involvement with Planned Pethood, the low-cost vet down the street, is. Nowhere can I find an actual percentage donated to a specific organization, and as a rescue person that sets off a serious case of nerves. The website describes the store owner as having her own rescue- but where is the name, the 501(c)3 status, the official website? Also many of the links point to Planned Pethood, but nowhere does the store owner declare an official affiliation. My spidey senses would be beeping if it weren't for the clear support of rescues via adoptable animals in store. I'd love to know if this store donates its profits, and if so, what percentage and TO WHOM; also, how closely, exactly, it is related to Planned Pethood. Second, I have a few snipes to take at the dog food selection. Canidae and Timber Wolf are excellent choices, but where is Innova Evo? I wanted a bag of Innova Evo Red Meat, but left empty handed because it doesn't appear to be on the shelves. And Avo Derm? It uses ground corn in several formulas- NOT exactly up to my pet food standards. Breeder's Choice is similarly well packaged but lacking in actual quality. However, for the slightly less picky than myself, Planet Pethood seems to be a nice pet supply store with many good choices and a true desire to support rescue and adoption. read more

I absolutely love this store! After spending years going to a chain to buy prescription limited ingredient dog food, Planned Pethood Plus (another godsend) mentioned I could buy basically the same dog food (different brand) from Planet Pet minus the prescription. I tried it out and found a wonderfully helpful, friendly staff each and every time I go in, my dogs love the food, and they have reasonable hours for a small business. I'm always waiting until the last minute to buy more food (my own fault) and the last time they were out of the big bag I usually purchase. The person working said that the brand I buy is able to switch between types of limited ingredients (and can be returned) but noticing my hesitation she also mentioned that since they were out that they could deliver what I needed when it came in the next day. Not only did they deliver but they delivered in a snowstorm and text messaged me where they put the food so that it didn't get wet sitting outside in an open porch area. They came through and it made me so happy - it reminded me of how good businesses go the extra mile - instead of having the customer drive all over town, they came to me which was completely unexpected and completely appreciated so my dog who needs this specific food didn't get sick and I didn't have to take off work to go back in possibly only to find it still wasn't in stock - which has happened to me at the chain. I will be going to Planet Pet as long as I have dogs - which will be - always - and I hope you do too! read more

My first experience with this pet store was not a good one. Because of the advice to the employee working the night i visited, I purchased two dog toys after explaining to the employee that my dog likes to chew up toys. He sent me home with a Kong Genius and a toy called an Invincible. The Invincible didn't last 2 hours, and the Kong Genius didn't last 24 hours. Together I spent $30 on these toys for them to last less than one day. Okay... no problem. So I brought them back to the store to find out their return policy was non existent. They refused to take them back and didn't care that I threw away over $30 at their store for toys that didn't last 24 hours. Additionally, the female employee I dealt with was very harsh. As another employee was about to help with explore my options, she rudely explained the only thing I could do is come back on a weekday and speak with a manager. I then called back on a weekday, and spoke with a manager who suggested I go through the manufacturers. I then called Kong and spoke with them about my issue, and they explained to me that their toys had a 30 day return policy and that the store should know this and take them back. Kong as told me I should be able to get my money back. I then called the store back, and the manager was not willing to give me a refund until I explained to her what Kong said, at which point I had to wait for her to call Kong and verify. After all this, I returned to the store to get a refund by the same rude employee from before who was less than apologetic. After this bad experience I went down the street to Simpawtico and the owner personally explained to me the return policy and pointed me to toys I could return if my dog chewed them up. I returned a toy the next day with no problem and finally settled on toys that could handle my dog. Simpawtico has earned my business, Planet Pet will did not. read more

Stumbled across this place after nomming on some noshables down the block at Swing Thai. I love frequently local pet stores, especially given the food needs for our cats; between the three, everything has to be grain free, poultry free and beef free. You would not believe how hard this is to find, but luckily, Planet Pet carries the big bags of Pure Vita, one of the few items our cats actually will eat that they are actually allowed to eat. The one drawback? All of the adorable adoptable animals! I'm not allowed to come home with anymore furballs, so it is really tough being in there as their little eyes break your hearts. read more

Another local gem! I haven't yet made a purchase here, but Mia (my Doxie mix) and I stopped in while I was waiting for some take out from Swing Thai. Planet Pet is a lovely little shop with a decent selection of the usual quality brands and varied selection of supplies. The staff was friendly and helpful and my pup got to frolic around with one of their adorable adoptable dogs that was manning the shop. How's a girl to decide which local shop is her favorite with other gems like Mouthfuls and Simpawtico? I think they call that healthy competition. I'll keep all three in rotation. One thing is for sure, there is no need for big-box pet supply stores when the local guys are doing such great work!! read more

I'll start this buy saying I buy a very specific dog food and have been buying it in Fort Collins. I spent a good half hour calling stores to see if they carried it, to no avail. I decided to go onto the food website to check if they have a store locator- the closest to my location was Planet Pet. The address they have listed is on Tennyson St- not the updated store address. This by no means is the store's fault- although they should update this information with the company in my opinion. Once I discovered the correct address I decided to drive even further out of my way to get the much needed dog food. I chose to check out their inventory and planned on purchasing some more items. The woman at the desk was on her cell phone having personal conversations, that's fine, life happens. She got off the phone, I asked for a price check as none of the larger bottles of salmon oil had a price tag. Now let me say this- their inventory is not that large and if she even remotely knew what they carried, she would have been able to tell based off the shelf and the size and color of the bottle what I was referring to. Well she couldn't, and instead of asking nicely what I was asking about she decided to respond with an attitude "I can't even see what you're talking about," she proceeded to walk out from behind the desk and take it from my hands. She gave me the price and I opted for the smaller bottle. She did come out and grab me the smaller bottle which was a nice gesture. I also decided to purchase some other things including the dog food. She started to check us out and my boyfriend was making conversation on how we went on this search for this food. I chimed in on how the address was incorrect and before I could tell her which site it was wrong on she blatantly said I was wrong and that Harlan is the correct address. Yes obviously. After rudely cutting me off- she proceeds to talk about how her dog eats the same food and his health has improved. That's great. I try again to inform her of the address that needs to be corrected and she just won't listen to me. Then she mentions the rewards program which I am trying to decline because the store is far away from me and one next to the grocer I frequent will be selling my food of choice is opening soon, and she won't let me get a word in edge wise. She gets out of her chair to get a form for me to fill out, and answers another call on a cell phone. Instead of asking said person if they could hold while she is taking care of a customer, she decides to have her conversation. Customer Service? Non- existent. After she gets off the phone the two chihuahuas are barking behind the desk and she yells at them that if they don't shut up she will sell them to a Chinese restaurant. Needless to say I was shocked. She turned around as said "oh my god that was racist!" She nervously chuckled and said "oh my that was so racist!" I raised my eyebrows. At this point I put my other items away and say we will only be getting the food today. I walk back to the desk, which the only thing on the counter now is clearly the bag of food. I say again we are only getting the food. While I'm relaying this information to her she is having a side conversation with someone else in the store. Not about any animal related questions, about how nice it is to see this person. Very distractedly she still tells me the total for the entire purchase I am no longer making. I tell her for the third time I am only buying the food. I asked her name, and she said it is Kelly. Honestly after that experience I didn't even want to buy the food at this establishment. If we had enough to make it to the 27th I wouldn't have supported this store, I would have waited until the grand opening of the other one. I am shocked she did not apologize about her behavior. A grown woman acting that way. A company that employs not only a racist, but an openly racist individual. Truly unfortunate. I will be calling management. read more

What a wonderful adventure we had, getting the best rescue dog in the world!!! We are so happy to have "noodle" be a part of our family! This is a disappointing adventure. I came into the store because the profits supposedly go to various rescue missions. What I found was a place that had outdated food and no specific answers as to where the profits go. I had a bad feeling about the whole thing. I get the feeling that this woman went into this with good intentions, but she's so disorganized and ditzy that it isn't happening. Very disappointing! read more

We adopted a cat a few years ago from this great little place. He is the best cat I have ever owned, I like that the adoptable dogs can roam around the shop. The staff was very friendly and clearly take great care of the dogs and cats who are up for adoption. I would definitely recommend adopting a cat or dog from Planet Pet. read more

We went in to look at the kittins very cute and fell in love with one. Filled out an app. on Sat. We came back in to look at the kitty on Monday And as we were standing looking at the kitten a lady come out of the back ad told the other lady she called the people that got the kitten and they were coming in to pick her up. I am not upset that we did not get this one. But on the app it says they will not call if you do not get it. We were told the lady would be in Tue to look over the apps. I purchased Bixbi Dog treats and they killed my dog! An hour after giving her one she went in to convulsions. Took her to the doctor and they gave her a shot and some meds. They just would not stop. Had them about every hour. Had to put her down. I am heart broken. NEVER will I buy a Bixbi treat or anything with that name on it. Everyone, BEWARE!!! read more

I absolutely love this store!! The employees are so helpful and knowledgeable about all things pet! When I rescued my German Shepherd, I had so many questions that the manager was always ready and willing to answer. She even gave me her personal cell so I could reach out if I ever needed her in the "off" hours. Additionally, when I decided to adopt a cat from them, they were wonderfully patient in allowing me to decide which kitty was a best fit for me and my pack of 3 dogs. I also foster for them and I have never meet a group of people who care about their animals and the adoption process more than the folks and Planet Pet. You can tell everyone there genuinely cares about each and every animal they place into homes. Lastly, my Swissy eats a type of food they do not typically carry. They special order it for me and ALWAYS have a bag in the back waiting. You will not get any better customer service anywhere else! It also goes without saying how much my Bichon LOVES going in there and getting his treats and belly rubs! A great place and a great mission. I won't shop pet supplies anywhere else! read more
