Planet Fitness and its LaGrange, NY franchise in particular are perfect examples of a company whose mission statements pay lip service to ideas like diversity, equity and inclusion, but in truth doesn't care at all about these things. Approximately 15 to 30 percent of the US population (52 to 103 million people) suffers from high sensitivity to stimuli like noise, light, and emotions, yet every Planet Fitness I've gone into (especially the LaGrange, NY franchise) has dozens of TVs playing a cacophony of news and other stations, and the music is SO LOUD that you, the gym member, can't even block it out with expensive noise-cancelling headphones. I joined Planet Fitness the first time in the summer of 2024 and endured the excessive stimuli for a year. During this period, I repeatedly requested the music be turned down (especially at 4-5 a.m.; seriously!?), and sometimes the desk person accomodated me, sometimes he didn't. A week ago, I joined again, thinking (stupid me) that they might have listened to my and other members' complaints about the excessive stimuli and made some changes. They hadn't. In fact, they are now playing the music SO LOUD that I can't even block it out with $400 headphones. People like me want to work out to REDUCE stress, but this isn't possible when LOUD, obnoxious, cacophonous music is playing, and dozens of TVs are showing nothing but bad news. For a long time, I wondered, "If someone asks them to turn down the music, why don't they just turn it down? Why don't they accomodate people with special needs like HSPs (Highly Sensitive People)?" Well, today I realized why they don't do it: 1. Because they know that 15-30 percent of their members are HSPs, and if they can DRIVE THEM AWAY, they'll be able to pocket their monthly membership fees without those members putting wear and tear on their equipment. AND 2. Because they WANT their clientele stressed, on edge and pumped full of cortisol so they won't lose weight or get healthy, and thus keep paying their membership fees. They want to get people ADDICTED to the gym. (Here's an interesting tidbit: the LaGrange, NY franchise keeps a BUCKET of Tootsie Rolls right at the entrance. Why is this? Could this be another insidious manipulative technique to keep people addicted to the facility?) Over the year that I was a member, I complained to the manager about the excessive noise half a dozen times, suggesting they offer low-stimulus hours, but my requests and suggestions were ignored. The bottom line is, all the manager and staff of the LaGrange facility needed to do to keep my business was turn down the damn music when I asked them to. They refused, so I wrote this review instead. Not smart, guys. And to any LaGrange, NY managers or corporate executives who are thinking of replying to this review: Don't bother. I don't want to hear your disingenuous "we care," "we're all about inclusivity" blather. The fact is, everyone knows what you're doing is diversity washing: trying to make it look like you care and you're doing something about the problem when we all know you're not. Just shut up. Shut up, shut off your TVs, and turn the damn music down. Tomorrow, for the second (and last) time, I'm cancelling my Planet Fitness membership forever. Yes, everyone knows that Planet Fitness is inexpensive, right? You get what you pay for, right? I understand that. This place, on paper, is a great deal if you want to have a very affordable gym membership. Due to the low price of membership, it's easy to accept the fact that the television situation is not good and there are a myriad of other complaints. However, in my book, no one gets a star if they steal money from you, particularly when they do it directly out of your bank account. This particular PF location told me that my membership had expired and made me buy a new one. They now only allow you to buy a membership that withdraws directly from your bank account. Several months later, I found out that I am still being billed for the membership that they told me had expired. They gave me all sorts of flimsy excuses for why this happened. Well that's fine, I understand that mistakes happen. Now give me my money back. Nope. They won't do it. They have no apologies for outright stealing from me. I gave them every chance I could to make it up to me. They would not give me one penny back. So, if you are signing up for this good deal gym, watch your bank account like a hawk and if you see this happening, shut down future charges with your bank immediately. This has happened to several other people so I am told. I am reporting this widely and would love to get a class action suit. A second one to one that is already brewing. I will add that this particular franchise was not at all sympathetic to this issue while the other branches I sold with were more so. PF has posted a response below, but I had already contacted them the day before I wrote this review and spoke with them at length, and they are emphatic that they will do nothing and that this never happens. I think this is the best PF out there. Once the gym reopened I found out they had closed this gym to remodel as they were going with a new company wide design and this was an ideal spot to start. Well the new design is great, the staff is so friendly, they keep it so clean and it is extremely well run. Sorry for the previous rant but the closure was definitely worth it. read more

They renewed my membership without my approval. There was no letter, no email, no text message, or any form of advance notice about their intention to renew my membership for another year. I saw the fees on my debit card statement and called their office, pointing out that I did not sign up for auto renew and that I do not want to renew my membership given the ongoing pandemic. Their response was that they would cancel my renewal but would not refund the renewal annual fee, because "we don't do that." To dispute an unauthorized charge with the bank you have to prove that they stole your card info, and since I voluntarily provided the information when i signed up for my membership last year, there's nothing I can do. I've had subscription services auto renew my membership before without my knowledge. Every time when I called to cancel the charge was refunded. This is the first time I came across a business so sneaky and brazen. Would've been one star but during the year when I used the gym my experience was generally positive. This is not about me trying to cancel an existing membership. I purchased a one-year membership, and when it ended they renewed it for another year without any notice to me. read more

The newly, redesigned layout oddly only has one bench in one of the 3 dressing rooms in the female locker room. The smaller changing room directly across from the shower has only one hook! Members are expected to place their clothes on the floor! As of this writing, 3/2722, the Wifi hasn't worked since last week. Staff seem not to care about it. When brought to the attention of staff last week, they just laughed it off as it "always a problem" and members are expected to spend time toggling back/forth to turn wifi on/off on their cellphone. It doesn't work, at all! As a result, members cannot access SiriusXM or Spotify. It's a major inconvenience where technically it should be a seamless, automatic login experience. Today, I asked another staff about the Wifi. She indicated they're aware and will report it to the manager. Why is it taking so long to fix the Wifi issue? If getting to your music or whatever is important to you, I suggest you workout out elsewhere until the issue is corrected. I don't expect Planet Fitness LaGrange, NY to care one way or another if membership drops off as a result. Planet Fitness never asks for feedback from members about what they might be doing better for them. read more

This is the worst gym I've ever been to. Most of the machines are broken in one way or another. It's always crowded with young kids using the weights, slowly, while checking themselves in the mirror. And the worst part about this scam of a gym, they won't let you cancel unless you do it in person. My wife has been trying to cancel for over a year, but we've moved and they insist we have to come in to cancel. I had to claim fraud with my bank to have the charges stopped. Just recently canceled my membership, too crowded and never any parking. A lot of young kids that make it unpleasant to want to work out, especially when they are just sitting on machines with cellphones. It was never like this when first opened. Oh well read more

The concept is great... a gym for every body and every wallet. I love that it's only $10 a month, after the yearly registration fee. However. I have to say, this gym is going downhill, and fast. Many of the TVs don't work in one manner or other. One is stuck on one channel, some have busted earphone jacks or CCTV buttons, some have remotes hanging off the machines, and some just plain don't work. I drove 17 minutes to this gym the other night after work, only to drive all through the parking lot looking unsuccessfully for a spot before returning home in to use my own dilapidated treadmill. Just as well, the place can be downright stinky at that time of day, not to mention humid. Those frustrations aside, it is what it is intended to be. They have lots of cardio equipment and doubles of most machines, at least the ones I use. Friday night and weekends are better times to try, but remember that they close at 7pm on Saturday and Sunday. Update 8/1/2015: some signs of improvement. New hair dryers where they were broken or missing in the ladies room. Paper towels out on the floor are no longer like tissues. However I still see some equipment with pads needing replacement, and the CC on today's treadmill TV did not work. read more

The construction being done currently is so loud and disruptive you can't hear your music even with noise canceling head phones. The smell of burnt electric wire or plastic was constant. With every door open be ready to walk out soaking wet. read more

This is truly a $10 a month gym. Actually that is probably expensive for what you get here! There is equipment which has had "out of service" signs on them for MONTHS! When one asks the attendants when repair can be expected the response is: "there is only one service person for 10 clubs"! How can you operate like that? That is probably why the locker rooms are always in need of attention. By the way that "attention" appears to be very sporadic and rare. Then there are the "members" who use the exercise machines as lounge chairs. They will sit there and do their e-mail, texting or just plain lounging. This makes the machine unusable by anyone else. There are many times when I have left without doing what I want because I've waited and waited for these self important machine hogs to move, which they will not do! I have been a member of the Lagrange Planet Fitness since the day it opened several years ago. I love this place; it is clean, staff is friendly, nobody bothers you, and there is plenty of equipment. My only one complaint is that there are only four stair steppers, and during busy hours, usually they are all taken. Last but not least, the $10 monthly (plus a nominal annual fee) can't be beat! I have a membership at another gym near my work at $50 a month, which is not half as good as Planet Fitness!! read more

I have had my share of gyms.... if you don't know to use equipment and do a thorough walk thru this place you won't be successful. I like a lot here... I have a few places close to where I live but there is always plenty of options for me at PF to get a workout of any type! Showers clean, bathrooms clean, people are kind and share! I get it's a judgement free zone. That's great. But my biggest concern is that the medicine calls have been gone for quite some time. Not sure why. Also I've started going to the gym everyday for about three weeks now and noticed that they removed the scales. Why?! It's still a gym. I give this place one star because it is a corporate store and there is no excuse for almost every cardio machine to have a broken headphone jack connection to the tv monitors. On a positive note, the gym is never packed and its always clean. With that said... the broken headphone jacks on every machine should have been fixed the day or week it breaks. WAY too hot inside. Humidity coming from the locker rooms makes running on the treadmills an extremely hot and uncomfortable experience. Also, the water pressure in the showers is pathetic. It's like a little trickle - makes it almost impossible to wash your hair because you can't get the shampoo out. The 'free consultation' they provide is a bit of a joke. The trainer talks to you like your an absolute moron and basically has you fill out your fitness goals on the first consultation and doesn't even show you how to use any of the machines or actually formulate a program for you until the second visit. I was really not impressed. No classes of any kind offered - another big minus in my opinion. And my biggest complaint is the hoops you have to jump through to cancel your membership. I called to cancel and was told I can't cancel by phone. I have to either send in a letter via certified mail (ridiculous) or come into the gym (which is really if you have a severe back injury and that's why your cancelling your membership in the first place)! Anyway, I was told I could come into the gym any time before June 10, 2014 to cancel my membership so I would avoid being billed AGAIN for another month ($19.99). So I wrote it on my calendar and also put the date in my phone. I managed to get over to the gym about a week before that and then the girl at the desk tells me "We're actually in the middle of a billing cycle..." yada yada and that I'm going to be charged for another month. I was livid. I explained to her this is impossible because when I called I was told that I had until 6/10 to come in or get a certified letter in. She agreed the girl on the phone gave me the wrong date - but did she excuse the charge to me? No. Now, today I just saw on my bank statement I was just billed $39.99 (this is the usual start-up/initiation fee they billed me when I signed up ages ago). So...I need to call them AGAIN. All in all, since my first call to cancel, I've been charged $60.00 for a membership I am, at the moment, physically incapable of using. I have the paperwork from the first week of June that shows I cancelled so I now need to spend more time getting this issue resolved. I will NEVER EVER go to another Planet Fitness again. One other negative, many of the TVs on a lot of the ellipticals and treadmills, don't work. You get on a machine and start your run - go to turn the TV on - and discover your out of luck. They don't even put a sign on it so you know which ones don't work. The only pluses with this gym were that it was relatively clean, never seemed to run out of available lockers or parking and basically, it's a convenient location right off the Taconic Parkway. I stopped in finally committed to joining, since I could use Planet fitness at any location around the country, as I travel. I'd like to at least feel out the gym, where i would be spending most of my workouts while I'm home. It's New Years' Day, I asked the receptionist if i could have a one day pass to check out the gym, sure that will be $20. $20 for one day, I thought it was $10/mo, $20 for full deal. Yep, $20 for a visit.. I've never heard of that, I could not even walk around, but could be escorted by her. Forget it, I'll find a friendlier gym, not one that won't let me check it out. Worked out there for 2 years. A good place to get an all around workout as long as you work around the busiest times 5-7pm. For the price you can't beat it! Usually a friendly staff and tons of cardio machines to choose from. Will miss this place for sure. read more

I go here during the late night and this place is always clean and all the weights are in their proper place in the racks. The machines are always clean as well as the benches. I don't do the cardio but they seem to work ok. There is always enough paper towel and spray bottles unlike some other places. The night staff is especially nice, friendly, and professional. read more

Meh. I recently quit this gym after taking up running outside. The location is convent and when I was going between 6:30-8am it wasn't that crowded, always could get machine without a wait. I found quite a number of the members to be rude (judgement free my ass!) and had actually had a few times when showering where the curtain was yanked back because another member thought it was empty! Really? You didn't see my feet or hear the water? Water pressure in the showers was terrible and drains were very slow. Actually wound up with dandruff because I couldn't wash the shampoo out of my hair. Many times outlets or hair dryers in the locker room didn't work. A number of machines were broken for months and not fixed. Treadmills could be super wobbly especially if using an incline. Not many free weights or stretching areas and also virtually no mirrors to check form.I can't complain about the price but still for all the negatives just wasn't worth it for me anymore. read more

This gym is the worst gym in the area. Customer service is rude and unprofessional. It is a awful unhealthy atmosphere to work out in. Don't be fooled by the marketing of their the low monthly fee and 0 annual fee. They sure get there money by charging you a annual fee before you even are there a year. And if you cancel membership on the day on their 6 month mark they still charge you the annual fee for the next year because you did cancel five days before which is not what they tell you when you call or even on the signs they have placed in the gym. read more

This gym is literally a joke. It is the exact opposite of what a "judgment free zone" is supposed to be. I've been a member here for a little over 2 months and frequent this gym at least 3 times a week with my husband and teenage son. Here is a snapshot of my experiences: the 30 min workout area is over run with people sitting on machines for 20+ min on their phones instead of working out, teenage boys in hoodies cursing loudly, and slamming machines, someone pooped on the floor of the men's shower twice, and just yesterday a meat-head threw a 45lb weight at my husband's feet all because he was asked not to remove the weight off of the leg press machine we were actively using! Management has been made aware and acknowledge knowing about these issues, yet nothing is done. This behavior is allowed and it is out of control. I am a U.S. Marine veteran and have been to many gyms in my life, but I have NEVER been to a gym with an environment so tasteless, rude, and stressful. Horrible! read more
