Nice ice cream place with vintage environment. The owner said this place was built on 1952. The waiting line was long and for a good reason, thier ice cream is so delicious! Where this place usually shines is in the variety of flavors they offer. There are typically some unique options on the menu for scooping like their 7 Layer Bar. The last few times we visited however, none of them were available. (The usual suspects are nice but nothing out of the ordinary and not worth the extra cost in my opinion.) I also dislike that you can't try any before ordering. How hard is it to provide those tiny plastic spoons like most places do for a small bite to make sure you like something before committing to it? The teenage help is generally polite despite the occasional eye rolls to one another when they think no is looking. (This occurred after asking if I could try a sample.) The place is clean and cozy but there is no indoor seating except for two small benches and most sit only while waiting for their order. They weren't even busy so I'm trying to figure out why they would rush out customers with no one else in line? MASSIVE safety concerns. Here's the thing - they have my absolute favorite Cookies & Cream in the entire world. My husband loves their Mackinaw Island Fudge. It's cute and quaint and delicious. HOWEVER. This past weekend I ordered a scoop of Mud Pie (mmmm, so good) and a scoop of Cookies & Cream. She ended up mistakenly giving me Cookie Dough instead of Cookies & Cream. When I figured that out and notified her, she asked if I'd eaten any of it. I said no, I had just taken the spoon out and was licking it off, puzzled, because I was expecting Cookies & Cream. I thought she was just going to set it aside and an employee would get a treat later. But no. She took it back... walked over to the case... and scooped it out of my bowl and back into the tub. We. were. horrified. My sister can't have chocolate or caffeine, what if she'd ordered Cookie Dough, and it had some of the Mud Pie remnants on it? My son can't have egg, what if this is a regular occurrence, and we ordered him a flavor we knew didn't have eggs, yet it had been contaminated with another flavor that someone didn't want that they'd put back? Not to mention, I'd already breathed on it and had it in my hands, I don't think that's supposed to be put back in the case for another customer? Needless to say, I'm not sure we'll be back, and I'm quite saddened about that, because it's really good ice cream. Maybe we'll just have to get it from Spirit of Kalamazoo downtown from now on. read more

The reputation of this ice cream shoppe is entirely well deserved. I think it recently won first place for ice cream in 2017's WWMT's "Best of West Michigan" and that was a surprise to absolutely nobody. I have never had anything less than excellent there and the service is never less than attentive and thorough. Okay, I wish there was more outside seating because I hate eating in cars. And I wish ice cream was not so expensive. But most importantly, I wish the shoppe would move closer to where we live. My default item now is a large chocolate malt. My all time favorite ice cream is Plainwell Ice Cream and is right in my home town!! There are so many things I love about PIC. My favorite ice cream flavors are French Silk, Cotton Candy, Butter Pecan, Pecan Praline, French Mint, Peanut Butter Fudge and Salted Caramel. I typically always order 1 or two scoops on a sugar or waffle cone. Once in a while I order it in a bowl. I also love their chocolate shakes. What I love most about their ice cream is that it's so creamy! They also have hot dogs. I love going for lunch and getting a hot dog and a scoop of ice cream. I love their ice cream so much that I always get their ice cream for our birthday parties!! When they're closed in the winter months I can still get my fix because our local grocery store sells 1/2 gallons of it. We love going to get ice cream after trick or treating each year as well. Not only is it fun because the employees are dressed up and you see so many families dressed up as well, but they offer a free scoop of ice cream to anyone who comes in dressed in a Halloween costume! This place is a family classic. It's tiny, clean, everyone is friendly, they let you taste anything before trying it and it's just my all time favorite ice cream shop.
