The What: If you want to learn striking, they offer kickboxing. If you want to learn grappling, they have Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). And if you want to be well-rounded, they teach mixed martial arts (MMA). The Who: The reason why you can learn such a wide array of combat sports is because of the owner and head instructor, Professor Danny Saurez. He is a true martial artist, having trained in everything from Judo and wrestling to Wing Chun and Kali. But of course, he is a world-class expert in BJJ, MMA, and kickboxing. As a former professional MMA fighter and a 4th-degree black belt in BJJ, he knows what it takes to win, having a versatile skillset and a strong championship mindset. But that doesn't mean you have to be a fighter to appreciate his teaching. Prof. Danny is one of the few elite-level instructors who is also an expert teacher -- he's physically talented, has real-world experience, and can adapt to each student (whether complete newbie or black belt) so they learn quickly. And the best part? He's funny, easy-going, and encouraging. The Where: The new SoCal Combat Club location in Anaheim is located in an industrial park, which is great because you don't get the random riff-raff who walk in and disturb a class like you would find at a strip mall location. Plus, it's close to the 57 and 91 freeways, so getting there is a breeze regardless of where you're coming from. The Why: There are many reasons to train here. You might start because you want to lose weight and get fit -- you will burn hundreds of calories per sessions, regardless of the style you try out. You might train because you want to learn how to defend yourself and your family or compete in amateur BJJ or kickboxing tournaments. But no doubt you'll stay because of the people. Prof. Danny and the SoCal Combat Club are so welcoming, supportive that it'll feel like you're a part of a family.

Three long rows of courts are pretty well spaced, with two-row bleachers at each, plus a TV that should have had the score up but instead flashed advertisements for the concession stand. The concession stand was out of probably half their items by 11:30 and the wrap I had was mediocre, though the fries my daughter had were pretty good (real hard to do a bad job on fries). I've seen some pretty good concession stands at this point, so a bit disappointing, especially knowing the tourney would be this big and they are charging $20 for parking and $20 a head to enter. Grateful for spots like this and hoping they can do a better job with food next time.

The equipment is great, and it offers good value overall. However, I do have some concerns. During the personal fitness class hours, the rack weights get completely wiped out between 4 and 6 p.m., making it really inconvenient for regular gym-goers. I'd strongly urge the owners to invest in more equipment during those times so everyone can work out comfortably. Additionally, I've noticed the floor isn't vacuumed as often as it should be--there's dust and hair accumulating, which is off-putting. And I'm also concerned about some members consistently wearing sandals or even going barefoot between machines--this just doesn't seem safe or sanitary, especially in a place where hygiene is so important. I hope the management takes these concerns seriously because I really want to keep supporting this gym but I have to say I am about ready to move on.

I've tried almost all levels and like them all in their own ways. The live ball sessions are my fave due to the higher level of players. All the coaches are great. Th facility is large and has plenty of courts. I also like renting courts and a machine when I'm solo to practice my shots. I also get my rackets strung here. But... there are definitely some things that could be better. There's a weird smell when you first walk in. You kind of get used to it after a while, but it's noticeable. The price was also kind of crazy , $42 for six people for one hour feels steep for what you're getting. The building feels a little outdated overall, and the restroom was honestly not great. The brown soap coming out of the dispenser was not it. Also, the lady at the front desk wasn't very friendly and rushed us off right when our time was up, even though there were empty courts. For what they charge, a little better customer service would make a big difference. We still had fun playing, but between the smell, price, and service, I'd say it's a solid 3 stars.
