Where to begin. We contracted Jen to do a restaurant remodel. We had been operating the same space…read moresince 2016 and when we opened at that time we didn't invest heavily into design. We recently decided that it was finally time to give the restaurant a fresh start and a makeover. Jen was incredible. Her attention to detail, creativity, and final vision are genius. Her knowledge of design and her work ethic are incredible. I've mentioned many times that she reminds me of Joana Gaines from HGTVs fixer upper. Jen is the ultimate problem solver. The hallway to our bathrooms needed lighting and she was able to find an effective and chic fix right away. We had an old bench that my painters suggested throwing away before she stepped in to show them how to spray paint it and refurbish it without spending a lot of their time. She noticed a light fixture in front of the restaurant that I had never noticed and all it needed was a light bulb which transformed the entrance. She free hand painted a mural for us which was amazing. She was able to reorganize seating to allow for more space and more seats. Finally she was able to open up the space and brought in more natural light by choosing different colors/lighting. The space really transformed and we didn't have to do any heavy construction. We planned on doing the restaurant in 3 phases. So far we were able to complete the first phase which has had great feedback from our customers. The restaurant already looks new and I can't wait to see the entire project get finished.

This is a specialty of theirs, and for a fee they'll send a consultant to your home to help you choose colors for the body, trim, eaves, doors, etc. (They'll help you with interior colors as well, of course.) I'm fairly clueless when it comes to this sort of thing, so paying an expert $350 is far preferable to ending up with a color disaster. The woman who came out brought along large color sample sheets (8.5x11) rather than the tiny swatches you get in paint stores, so visualizing what the color will look like on a large area was easy to do. (Anyone who has ever based a paint choice on a single square-inch sample knows how error-prone that process can be.) If, unlike me, you trust your own color judgment, just stop by their shop. They carry two lines of paint:, Devine and Authentic Home COLOR, both of which come in 2 oz. sample sizes for every color they carry, so you can test it out on a good sized patch before committing to a quart or gallon. The paint prices are a bit high - a good $5/gallon over what you'd pay for the best quality Benjamin Moore paint - but the Devine brand goes on so thick that you'll be tempted to stop after a single coat. And given the time and labor investment involved in painting, the cost of the paint itself seems negligible.

I've struggled for some time in writing this review as my experience with Ms. Banak and Authentic…read moreHome was such an overwhelming disappointment I could not put the experience to words. I contacted Authentic Home about 4 years ago, after buying my first home in West Seattle. I wanted to use a local business to support the neighborhood and had not worked with a design firm before. I was disappointed from the start. The designer did not seem to "get me" although I was willing to continue to work with her and make the best of it. It got worse from the start. I had to work around the designer's schedule she did not work with mine. When the products began to arrive to my home, couch pillows were falling apart, fabrics were incorrect and silk curtains were made so poorly a third grader could have done the work. I do know that the "designer" I worked with decided to leave the company during the process and one of the vendors was let go (at least that's what Kathy told me)...it was a mess. What was most disappointing was Kathy Banak's response to my disappointment in the service. I spent over 15K for a small room design and after 4 years it turns my stomach when I look at the draperies and recall the whole experience. I am writing this after such a long time because I think it's important that anyone looking for a design service take this information into consideration. Although I would never purchase paint or anything else from Kathy Banak I cannot speak to the paint/color consulting service Authentic Home provides. I would highly recommend asking for references, reviewing work and understanding what vendors they work with if you plan to take any advice or order products outside of paint color from Authentic Home.

We hired NOR Design & Construction during the COVID-19 chaos and were a little nervous about people coming into the home but the entire process was made very smooth for us. Not only was every precaution used to protect our home, but masks were used, sign in sheets were used to keep track of who and when someone entered our home, a "wash station" was set up for employees to sanitize and wash their hands was in place, and a Port-o-Potty was set up so that no contactors wouldn't use our facilities. Now lets talk about a HUGE concern when hiring a contractor...COMMUNICATION and DEPENDABILITY. Jessica and Justin set up a group text with myself and they were in constant communication with us throughout the entire project! Any questions, concerns or anything else was made extremely smooth and made us feel so comfortable. The project had someone at our house every day from start to finish! Honestly, I can't say enough positives about NOR Design & Construction. If you are thinking of a Bath or Kitchen remodel, we highly recommend them!

Because the counter top was formica and would be damaged during removal, the contractor told me I should plan to replace it. I hired Calista Munnell from Calista Interiors to help me quickly make smart and attractive choices for the counter top and flooring. Initially I wanted to go with a marble called Rain Forest Green. Calista talked me out of it. She explained marble is too soft for the wear and tear experienced by most kitchen counter tops. Because I really wanted something attractive, durable, and low maintenance, Calista recommended granite. We walked through several places and looked at hundreds of slabs. Of course I liked some of the more wild and crazy slabs. She pointed out the slabs with large patterns might not look as good with big holes cut out of them for the range and sink and it might be more difficult to attractively align the seams. All good points. I plan to sell my house in a few years. So when I fell in love with a very intense slab of Ocean Red, Calista explained it would be a very polarizing choice. Some potential buyers would like the red, many others would not. It would be best to select a counter top that would appeal to a broader cross section of people. I thought about it and decided she was right. We finally settled on a beautiful slab of Kosmos from Pental. It looks great with the existing cabinets. Calista and I talked briefly about the back splash. I knew I didn't want to run the Kosmos up the wall. A few days later Calista showed up with the perfect selection: a metallic glass and stone mosaic (Titanium) from Tierra Sol. It will perfectly tie the exiting cabinets together with the new counter top. Very exciting. I knew I needed a new kitchen sink and faucet, but I didn't want to spend a second looking through the hundreds of sinks and faucets available at Home Depot and Lowes. Calista quickly recommended a beautiful under mount stainless steel sink and matching faucet. Excellent. Finally we shopped around for new flooring. The original flooring was solid maple and limited to just the kitchen, nook, front entry way, and guest bathroom. The carpet was 15 years old and starting to show its age in high traffic areas. Calista recommend ripping up the carpet and covering the entire downstairs with hardwood flooring. It's strong, easy to care for, and will increase the resale of my home. I grew up in the South in an old house with hardwood floors. It didn't take much to convince me to replace the dingy carpet with beautiful solid wood floors. I'm very thankful for Calista's time and insights. She was the perfect partner for me. Now my home is more beautiful than ever.
