AAMCO Transmissions & Total Car Care

This is probably the fifth time I had to rely on Rick and his crew to help me out. This time the…read moretransmission cable went out on a Sunday night and the car was stuck in second gear. Rick squeezed me in on Monday morning and I had the car back the next day. He saved me big bucks by rebuilding the cable after he found out his supplier sent the wrong part. My car is back running better than when I first purchased it. Thanks again Rick!

I'd caution all customers against using this AAMCO location. They broke parts of my vehicle and…read morewere dishonest multiple times, including the initial diagnosis. My vehicle was misdiagnosed and received an unnecessary transmission repair. During that repair, parts that were removed for the repair were broken and my vehicle is now inoperable. Before writing this review, I gave AAMCO 30 days' written notice to provide customer service and correct their mistakes, but received no response. Also before writing this review, I submitted a claim to the Better Business Bureau and awaited AAMCO's response, which was essentially to say that older vehicles (1997 in this case) break when you work on them. Before reviewing, I also filed a claim with the Oregon Department of Justice, which received no reply. I had hoped this to all be resolved amicably, but unfortunately, have received no customer support from AAMCO. The issue I brought my vehicle in for was that it was jumping in and out of overdrive after 30-40 miles at highway speed. The service manager, Rick, "road tested" the vehicle "around town" and told me it was road worthy and the fluid looked clean and good. It started doing it again after about 30-40 miles at highway speed and I brought the vehicle back. The service manager decided it needed an entirely new transmission at a cost of $3,624 based on the fact that the fluid looked "brown" and smelled "bad"-- a diagnosis at odds with the previous one. It is a fact that fluid looks and smells bad when a transmission needs a routine service. After them having the vehicle for two weeks where it was worked on by a technician named Brandon, I picked it up and tried taking it for a test drive and the exact same problem happened as if nothing had been fixed-- after 30-40 miles at highway speed it started jumping in and out of overdrive. I brought the vehicle back yet again and this time they told me that they had tested the vehicle at highway speeds under my complaint conditions by driving it to Depoe Bay and back at which point they confirmed my complaint and decided that the problem was actually a shift sensor external to the transmission which they offered to fix for free-- this was the true problem and the transmission rebuild was seemingly unnecessary. When I picked up my truck, this time the shift lever was completely loose and it had trouble shifting gears and the plastic end of the lever with the overdrive button was 90 percent broken off. When I complained, the service manager came out to look and watched the end of the shift lever fall easily off. He offered to fix it for free. When I picked the vehicle up again, there was a new shift lever completely, but the entire assembly is so wobbly and tweaked now that it jumps out of gear and you have to drive with your hand on the lever making the vehicle unsafe and unusable because all driving must be done one-handed. I also was charged a $380 4WD fee and in the process of whatever that fee entails something happened and now it won't go into four-wheel drive at all. I basically went in with a 4WD pickup with an overdrive problem and came out with a very expensive 2WD pickup that is undrivable-- overdrive does work now, however. The service manager saved the parts his technician broke and sent pictures of them to the BBB, although to what end, I'm not sure. Then he tried to say I broke the shift arm by lightly touching it while he watched it fall off with his own eyes. The service manager signed off saying they would honor ONLY the transmission warranty, despite the fact that they replaced the shift sensor, shift arm and disabled the 4WD system somehow. If you aren't capable of working on older vehicles without breaking them, why take on the job?

I can see where the previous owner hit a curb pretty well and took a gouge out of the tire. I ended up needing to buy new tires the next day after buying the car. Not something I expected, typically you budget for that. Anyways, I thought I would have the car serviced there because the selling department and servicing department are two different ones. I needed an oil change & tire rotation. I asked twice if they rotated my tires, they said yes. I got home and I knew for a fact they did not because one of my wheels has a small mark of yellow paint on it. I ended up going to Les Schwab for the rotation (love them). I called them the next day. I inquired if they rotate tires, which he said yes. I informed him that I was in yesterday for service and they did not rotate my tires. He pulled up my account and he said well I won't argue with you but it shows that we did. I explained how I know and he got real quiet and said oh. I let him know that I was not too happy and very apprehensive about my oil change now. He said he would let the manager know. I'm disappointed because I do not trust the Toyota dealership on the coast, as they have done some shady stuff to my other vehicle for oil changes so I go to the valley. Well, now it looks like I will need to go to the valley for my car's maintenance.
