It has wonderful, happy teachers in drawing, anime, painting and ceramics (both wheel throwing and hand building). There is also an active art gallery with different and fascinating art shows, openings, and talks all year round. It truly is a hidden gem.

I was a true beginner and now feel much more confident and have taken drawing classes using charcoal, graphite, and pastels. I really enjoyed the painting class and learned a lot more about drawing and painting abstract, landscapes, and portraits. Learning all of these techniques from Jim Sparks, an accomplished artist and college level teacher has been an invaluable adventure. He works with all levels, classes are creatively interesting and very entertaining. His constructive criticism is spot on and completely helpful and provides much needed insight. Never did I feel uncomfortable, intimidated, or inferior to pick up a pencil during any of these classes. I would highly recommend this class if you have any interest in art and drawing. Even if you think you can't draw, guess again, Jim's classes will help develop you into a better artist and definitely inspire you to improve. So sign up!

I went here this past Saturday for an event. It was anything short of a disaster. The owner,…read moreKrystal, was probably the most unprofessional business owner I've ever met. She had her baby on the hip the entire event, which was alarming for a workshop where you can literally get hurt anywhere you turn. At one point, she had the baby in a walker and he was just walking around hitting into things and I almost tripped over him... I couldn't believe it honestly. Something could've fallen on him and it wasn't like this was a last minute event. This was planned way ahead of time where she could've found child care coverage for the day, it was no excuse. She was extremely rude to the children and parents alike, I was really taken back. I signed up beforehand on the website and when it was time to make the craft, my daughters name wasn't on the list. She shoved the list in my face and said "you didn't sign up!" I said "I know for a fact I signed up because I sat down with my daughter and I let her pick out exactly what craft she wanted". She then shoved the list back in my face and said "no you didn't, she's not on the list!" My daughter is 5, you're a business owner, it's a simple fix, what's with the attitude? My husband and I were strongly thinking about doing an event together there to make something. We would never go now after this. The crafts are extremely expensive too, not worth it.

My friend and I had a hankering to do something creative and to have a little "girls" afternoon…read more She had been here last summer, and suggested it. Looking over the website I was a bit hesitant as I saw the prices. I thought..."This seems a bit pricey...I'm not sure..." But I threw caution to the wind and decided, what the heck. You pick your date that you want to come to the workshop and you pick your project as well as the design. Upon arrival, your wood pieces are there for you as well as the stencils for your chosen design. You are provided a color sheet that has the paint colors, as well as the wood stain colors. There are a ton of examples on the walls too, as well as samples of different wood staining techniques. Ethan was helping out today and I have to say - I am not sure if our experience would have been as enjoyable if not for him. He was simply AMAZING. So kind, warm, engaging and helpful. He didn't mind when I picked out 5,3492 colors for my wood tray project. If I came back here, I'd want him to be working again. Anyways, I am not going to bore you with the step by step process but the three hours allotted kinda flew by. Depending on your project and the design/colors you pick, you will see why. In my tray with the art supplies, I wanted certain supplies to be "true" to real life and used multiple colors for a single item and this of course took time. The process is fun, easy and even for those who claim "they can't draw" or "they aren't creative" I call malarky - this is a place where you will absolutely have success and have a true one of a kind creation that you have made, and that you didn't purchase from Home Goods or something of the like. Head on down here for the afternoon with a friend or significant other and you are sure to have fun and get those creative juices flowing.

How can i forget Women's Studio Workshop???…read more There's no way I could gush enough praise of this place that would come close to describing how wonderful it is! gosh, where do i start?? 1) The studios: They transformed an old hardware store from the 1800s into a two story art studio that includes areas for: paper-making, printmaking, letter pressing, bookbinding, ceramics, photography and silk screening. It's set in the woods and surrounded by nature 1 mile outside the small, Hudson Valley town of Rosendale, NY. 2) The artist opportunities: They offer fellowships, studio rentals, residencies, paid-internships and grants for artists (mainly women, but not exclusively female) to come use their studios and create work. --- I, myself, was accepted as a studio intern and lived and worked on the premises for 6 months in the fall of 2005. I learned more in that six months then i did in 4.5 years in art school. 3) Classes: For artists who don't have the time to take off 4-6 weeks to work as a fellow or resident The Summer Arts institute offers 3-5 day classes (lunch included) in all of the studios areas: paper-making, printmaking, letter pressing, bookbinding, ceramics, photography and silk screening. 4) The women: Ann, Tana and Anita (the founders and owners) are all talented artists, friendly, compassionate and inspiring women. ... for everything i missed their website is a wealth of additional detailed information on classes and artist opportunities: http://wsworkshop.org/ .... sigh... I have a little piece of my heart set aside for this place.
